Seeing as so many people are comparing 1/4 mile, 100-200km/h and 60-130mph times via their GPS based performance hardware these days, rather than actual drag strip time slips. I figured I should put in the work to see if there is anything more accurate than what seems to be the North American standard which is Dragy. I compared the newest Dragy Version 2, the original Dragy model, as well as a Racebox Mini S, and put them all up against an NHRA certified drag strip time slip. I'd say the results speak for themselves...

I have a Dragy DRG69 (bought in 2018) and just got a RaceBox. I like the RaceBox way more! It's much easier to use, super consistent, finds satellites quickly, and has a long battery life. The Dragy has signal problems in well insulated cars, and sometimes reads out very weird numbers, which seem to be slower than reality, or in some cases slightly overly optimistic. Maybe it's due to age, but I'll make a comparison video soon to see what the difference is. The RaceBox is an amazing device!

Interesting! I was always amazed (and still am) at how accurate my Dragy was; but to see that there's something even more accurate just blows my mind. Even so, i love my Dragy and appreciate it for what it is, as it's still really good.

From just a quick Google search it looks like a simple gauge and datalogger. Considering I log with my tuning cables usually, I don't think I'd have any use for that. Thanks though!

"Quick Google Search", if you look closer you'll see that it's like no other "gauge". It's smart and will warn you before things break. I love mine and it saved my engine.@@VancityAudi

@@VancityAudiawesome comparison of those devices. Great vid!! The Hurt Alert is probably the nost misunderstood car device in the world. And thats probably my fault. Its the first of its kind which actually runs all the numbers through algorithms rather than just show values on a screen. Doing this makes the Hurt Alert detect and alert on issues like persistent knock, running too Rich, running to Lean, bad fuel, basically issues where multiple values need to be calculated to determine a major issue.

Adam about 2yr ago you test the pgear with your old dragy...if not much to ask it is possible that you can do the same test including you new acquired Racebox...and btw like always awesome video and thanks for keep your audience informative. Outstanding job!

Concerning timing, there wasn't actually a difference between the DRG70 and the RaceBox Mini S. If you don't care about speed, it actually doesn't really matter. Taken the price-difference into account: if you don't need it professionally or only need straightline performance numbers, I'd simply recommend going with the cheaper Dragy. Simply can't justify a 60 to 70 higher pricetag for a racebox for that purpose. I am about to buy the dragy or the mini S, at this moment I am leaning towards the dragy, price- and usewise, even though I like the smaller formfactor of the Mini S a tad more.

You must have been watching a different video, lol. The DRG70 was the worst in terms of an ET compared to the time slips. Only on the 3rd run did it display the same ET. Like my pinned comment mentions, I continued to use my Racebox, and it has consistently been more accurate then the Dragy devices.

@@VancityAudi I've cutted the corner quite a bit indeed. Even though I still think that average Rob won't go wrong with either device. I just grabbed a RaceBox Mini S myself. an additional 25% off, due to Black Friday, made it a sub 200 device. Still a difference compared to dragy, but that's definately worth it for me.

@@VancityAudi You're right! The Dragy also seems to under report the actual trap speeds, which I've noticed in my testing. That is especially noticeable in cars with good insulation.

Your equipment should be more accurate than the drag strip timers when it comes to mph readings. Your devices will record GPS speeds, but the track uses the time it takes to cross the last 66' of the strip to calculate your speed.

Considering I can use multiple different GPS devices to measure my MPH at the same time, and they'll all read differently, I'll trust the NHRA certified time slip any day of week over one of these devices.

If you're referring to recording video at the same time, I don't think it does. I've never tried though.

Yeah, the overlay feature is really nice as it pretty much prints your ticket as you make the run, in car, as proof. And it can't be manipulated. For guys who don't go to the track much, the feature is a must for posting YT videos.

Iv always wondered if my dragy was a lemon, or if I my car was just slow compared to others. Have you ever heard of a dragy being super inaccurate ? I’m getting like 9 secs 60-130 in my e63 according to dragy which is 💩

I have heard of Dragy results being inaccurate. Sometimes they can't acquire a good enough satellite signal and produce either too quick or too slow a result versus what the car really does.

Accuracy depends more on your staging then on anything else. If you stage deeper, you are triggering sensors a bit earlier, so difference is only in that. In theory, if GPS device has enough satelites and signal is stable, it should be more precise then drag strip. ET is Estimated time, not measured time, so it does estimation. Also trap speed is estimated, not measured. With GPS devices, everything is measured, and it is done 10 to 20 times in a second.

Seeing as the entire point of this video is to find a GPS device that measures as close to possible as what we see for ET & trap speeds compared to the NHRA certified drag strip time slip I don't see your comment as relevant considering drag racing time slips at NHRA certified tracks are considered the highest form of accuracy in drag racing.

@@VancityAudi point is that staging need to be constant so you can get silimar results. Every app has its own algorithm for staging, and Racebuddy app and device give you ability to chose what type of staging you use to get the same as on the strip.

ET stands for elapsed time, not estimate time. The drag strip uses sensors, called the "beams" to measure speed and time. The time is based on the time it takes the front tires to break the finish line beams after unbreaking the staging beams. Speed at the track is calculated based off the time it takes the car to travel between the final two beams in the track.
