Why Countries Are Landlocked + Canals

Why are some countries landlocked? In the case of Bolivia its because they lost a war with Chile.
Ethiopia and Serbia granted independence to the parts of their countries that had a coast.
Some countries like uzbekistan, are so far inland that they are doubly landlocked, which means they are both landlocked and completely surrounded by other landlocked countries.
When a country is landlocked it can be difficult for them to trade, and they often have to rely on their neighbours. In Europe, the danube river lets many landlocked countries have some access to the black sea. As well, many canals exist which lets small ships travel deep inland, providing some of the benefits of having a coast.
Some countries may look landlocked, but when viewed closely you can see they have tiny coasts. You can watch this video I made which explores the weird borders in those situations:

Hello everybody! There are a lot of new people now. Thanks everyone for subscribing! You may have heard that KZfaq has been a bit unreliable lately. Though I think its been unreliable in my favour given that the channel only had about 500 subscribers a month ago. Still its probably best if there is a way for you to see new uploads without having to rely on youtube. The best way to do this is with an email list, so if you want you can follow this link to sign up for the list: eepurl.com/csi__f Also if you prefer you can use the subreddit, which has the added benefit of a comment section: www.reddit.com/r/VanDeGraph/

Say that to Swiss Navy, they patrol their own Swiss lakes. In Vietnam the River Patrol Boats were under the command of the US Navy, not the US Army. Even they patrolled the waterways inside South Vietnam, not the sea. During the Rhodesian war, the Rhodesian Army converted the ferry "Ubique" into a warship by placing heavy Soviet machineguns on the upper deck. So, a instant Navy. Just add hot water and wait 3 minutes.

Iraq Fuckin CountryBall it’s not old persian it is just persian, like new persian, as they speak it today in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Therefore there are many words in persian that end with „Stan“ not referring to any country’s. Kindergarten means „Kodakistan“ place of the children’s. Or „Rigestan“ means desert, „qabrestan“ means graveyard.

Hi, a small error: The port of Switzerland is not on the rhone in Geneva, but on the Rhine in Basel. From where larger river ships go to. In the 1960s, there was a plan to build a canal through switzerland to connect the rhone and rhine. Nothing was done, so that rhone can be only be used for very small ships.

You forgot about virtually landlocked poor Russia. Some of its ports are not navigable round the year and the rest lead to oceans or straits controlled by NATO countries. Only a canal connecting the Caspian sea and the Persian gulf (called Iranrud) can solve the problems of : Russia, Belarus, Central Asian Countries and Iran.

That is false. Bolivia never intended to invade Chile. The only time that Bolivia and Peru were a possible threat to Chile (according to Chilean political leaders of the time) was during the Bolivian-Peruvian confederation which the Chileans made sure to split. The reason for the new alliance was to defend itself against a possible new Chilean invasion due to the strong increase of Chilean companies in the territories previously considered Bolivian. In addition, Bolivia left the war early because it was not in the best conditions for a war due to internal problems in the country, therefore it does not make sense that it would have been planning to invade Chile.

Nice video. You should do a full video on the states of the United States which are not on the ocean but have access to shipping due to rivers and canals. Such as the ones you mentioned-- the St Lawrence Seaway and the Mississippi River, plus the Ohio and Missouri rivers. And on the West Coast, the Columbia and Snake River system actually gives the state of Idaho access to the ocean with one port city (Lewiston). So the majority of U.S. states have sea access somehow.

In fact, Bosnia has 20 km of coastline -- although the two borders with Croatia are only about 8 km apart (the difference is accounted for by the inclusion in those 20 km of a long peninsula). Bosnia's one coastal town, Neum, is not very well suited to development as a port, however, being poorly linked at present to the country's interior.
@Gameflyer001
@Gameflyer001 6 жыл бұрын
The area is almost completely surrounded by Croatia and there just isn't a good amount of land near Neum to build a port, as some of Croatia's islands are quite close to it.

Over the few weeks, I've really come to love your channel. I just have 2 pieces of criticism for you to help you improve: 1) At 3:45 in the videop (and a few other spots) you represented Serbia with a light blue color, which is only slightly greener than the ocean. This was fine when you showed it as Serbia and Montenegro since it was connected to the sea, but once the map switched to show it in its landlocked state, it became really difficult to distingish the difference between the 2 at a glance. I would reccommend that in the future, you avoid using any light blue to represent anythong other than ocean or lakes. 2) The way you talk can sound really stilted at times. I haven't noticed this problem in every video, but I have noticed it in about half of them, this one being one of them. I can't really think of a good way to articulate why the way you talk sounds stilted, but I'll try: It can sometimes sound like you're trying too hard to put emphasis on certain words or phrases that you say. Also, it sounds like you force yourself to raise the end of your sentance. Most of the time, people don't raise the end of a sentance unless they're shouting or asking a question; in most other sentances, people drop their voice at the end of the sentance. Compare the way you would say these 2 words for a better example of what I'm talking about: Really? Really. I think this problem may derive from the fact that you subconsiously feel like you have sort of perform your script since you're doing it for an audience. I'm not sure how you would go about fixing that, but I think knowing that the problem exists is definately the first step for you to improve.
