Ice owns Under Pressure now, the only reason Ice was targetted because this was a phenomena selling a million records a day, Freddie Mercury was flattered but the others in the band an studio execs wanted their pound of flesh it was settled out of court. Ice was hated on for being successful at Hip Hop, much like Elvis, but with Ice all those that followed wouldnt have an audience as far and as wide!

There is no denying what Vanilla Ice did, but in fairness, he made better use of that bass riff than Queen ever did. He made people dance & groove to it. Queen probably wouldn't have mind Vanilla's 'sampling' of their riff had his song flopped.

There is a history that a lot of people miss with how rap came about. DJ's were getting really hot at parties, and they started "scratching" the records, intentionally extending how long the song went for. (This also meant they didn't need to buy as many records.) They started having people come out and introduce them, and talk up the audience, and there was an evolution where they would start rapping and the DJ would spin the records with them. So rap really evolved out of a DJ playing records, so when it went mainstream the rap artists were doing exactly what they grew up doing, rapping to songs a DJ was altering. People who were not into rap got pissed off about it, especially many of the artists, but the record companies quickly found that by setting up a few lawyers they just had a second source of income, but they only went after rap songs after they became big. Vanilla Ice was like 17 in this, so we need to take that into account. There were a lot of executives that could have got the rights ahead of time, while he was the kid who had stars in his eyes who thought the experts were there to help him. He spent time bitter about it and refused to do the song for a while. Didn't help that when "Gangsta Rap" came out he was their number one target, and they were relentless.

You have to understand that sampling was common in rap and he was just doing what everyone did. The problem was this song blew up bigger than anything before it. Vanilla Ice put rap in the mainstream like it or not. All the attention that got focused on this kid (he was 16 when he released this) was intense and he didn't handle things as well as he could have. It's easy to monday morning QB this 30 years later but there were lessons that had to be learned and Vanilla Ice took the brunt of those hard lessons.

Eminem didn't show up till 10 yrs later, but Vanilla Ice couldn't get anyone to take him seriously as a rapper even though he was on the charts. They called him a "novelty act" cause they just weren't ready for him back then. And when there was a "problem" with the few bars of bass line that he used, he ended up buying the rights to Under Pressure so that he owned it.

This was fire!! Damn, he gots some moves, bars, swag, and flow! I looked it up, so back then, every rapper/rap group sampled but at that time, no rap album had ever sold more than 500K copies or less, so most ppl didn’t sue cause it wasn’t worth their time and money. He did the same thing, never thinking they would ever be huge. It exploded and sold 15 million copies and 163 million singles! That’s when it was obvious there was money there, so Queen sued. The outcome was that they now share rights. So whether his song or Queen with Bowie sell a copy or gets played, He gets paid a percentage too!

To get the record straight David Bowie lifted his guitar riff on his 70's hit "Queen Bitch " off of American 1950's rocker Eddie Cochran's " Three Steps to Heaven. Cochran couldn't sue because he died in a car crash in 1960. Queen lifted rockabilly riffs on his "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" from Elvis Sun sessions. British groups should be the last to complain about stealing, because they made millions off of American 50's R and B, blues and rockabilly artists. Not to mention the Rolling Stones (Chuck Berry) and Led Zepplin on blues artists.

He used a few bars of a bass line from a song and looped it. Then, when it was said that he was using part of their song.. he BOUGHT THE RIGHTS TO UNDER PRESSURE so its his now, and he did end up paying them for it. He used a few bars of bass line and looped it, and changed a note or two, then still bought the rights when there was a complaint. Its been said that Freddie Mercury had no problem with it being used, it was lawyers who complained And this was at the end of 1989... taking rhythms from other peoples songs wasn't uncommon at the time. Because he was singled out he purchased the rights to this beat. He now owns this portion and gets paid whenever the original song is used which I find hilarious. Back then, everyone took/stole beats. The 80's is when these laws started being made. They receive songwriting credit & royalties for the song later. He said he made the beat at first, which is what most had a problem with on that side of things. Looking this stuff up now, you can find he was the labels (Suge Knights) "character", he was acting out what he told him to do supposedly. The money from this song built Suge Knight an empire named Death Row. Ice didn't get any money for this song. The other side was his claim (maybe rightly, but hey) that he was a better dancer and rapper than MC Hammer, and most everything he said about his own life was untrue... weirdly true now though. Most everything he said he did but hadn't back then, he has since weirdly done.

He eventually bought the rights to the song from Queen for 4 million. Best investment he ever made according to him. Also, a year before MC Hammer sampled Super Freak for his Can't Touch This song and no one cared.

keep in mind all hip hop artists were sampling. THis became a problem because of the amount of records sold. He was also 16 and living the street life, I don't think lawyers, sampling, record deals, etc were on his mind. Sampling was a non issue before this.

Just subbed after watching “Creep” Radiohead and this reaction - don’t anyone come for me- I LOVE Queen! Now.. his defense was that there was an extra /tone/ beat in that opening riff- I hear it- 🤷🏼‍♀️ There was a time that if you changed it AT ALL, then it wasn’t copying- (sooooo many have sampled songs- ) my understanding- I sincerely believe he thought he was in the clear and NOT actually ripping off Queen.. He’s not stupid.. he would have known the fallout that would take place.. and it happened anyway- where was his manager, etc.?🤷🏼‍♀️ I just don’t think he INTENDED to “steal” from anyone- IMHO-- He’s moved on and successful at remodeling homes in Florida- good for him- I’ll always like this entire CD- ✌️✨

Music and entertainers were great up until the early 90's. From the mid 90's onward, the music, entertainers and movies all changed for the worse. Not just my opinion, but many others would agree with me.

According to Vanilla Ice, he bought the song, he owns it. Said it was cheaper to buy the song that pay legal fees and royalties. By the way, he wasnt even the first or last to sample off of others music. Puff daddy ... uhm, sean combs owes his career to sampling. Its just that this song was so incredibly big it got the brunt, make that ALL of the scrutiny.

He got sued by Queen and David Bowie so they got paid. If you watch his own reaction to this video he explains that he was 19 when he wrote this song and sampling was just getting popular and he just didn't know better at the time.

They went to court and ICE won. Watch the video of Vanilla on the stand. There's an extra note in ICE's beat. The outcome was artist now know if they just add one note to a beat it now a new beat. I most appreciated there weren't any race lines in his video. Not all white or black.

Back in the days , that was normal taking samples from other songs and DJ's will create a whole different song from them. That was normal until copyrights laws started being apply to music infringement. BTW here is the remix to this song. came out 2018. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9eWoaymq8Cdg3U.html
