From its beginning in 1981, San Diego's light rail, commuter rail, and rapid bus network has grown to 82 stations, spanning 117 miles (188 kilometers). This animated video takes you through the timeline of when new stations were opened, forming the MTS and NCTD network that we know today.

I am so excited for the blue line extension. As a student at ucsd, it'll just make getting around much easier. An interesting tidbit is that a good chunk of the northern part of the extension is elevated. I've heard a bunch of people grumble about how the viaduct ruins the view, but I think it actually looks pretty neat, but I may be a little biased. A very fun and interesting video indeed!

The funny part is “what view is there to ruin?” That whole section up in University city is all high Rises, or prepping to be. And the other elevated part is on the hill and fits in great.

But on weekends and when school is out, the only people who'll be riding the trolley to UCSD will be the homeless. It wouldn't surprise me if Chula Vista cops started handing out free trolley tickets. ;-)

The Mid-Coast Extension just opened today. I had the opportunity to ride it. A definite game changer for transit in the San Diego region.

Great overview of the history of the entire system. I was an early adopter of the Rapid 225 bus out of Otay Ranch, ridingon its first day of service. In a year of riding it and the Rapid 215 to my job in Balboa Park, I saved $2,300 in gas and tolls. Plus, I didn't have to worry about driving in traffic. It added about 20 minutes to my commute taking the bus, but the savings were worth it to me.

I would’ve loved for the trolley to go all the way to campus to UCSD when I attended. Graduated in ‘18 and honestly public transport at the time was trash in SD, so happy it’s gotten better.

I rode the San Diego trolley for the 1st time yesterday! I rode from Middletown to Old Town. I was very impressed.

I live in the L.A. area, but I've always thought a big hole in San Diego's light rail is nothing goes to the airport. At least in L.A., LAX will soon be getting rail service.

Common knowledge is that the taxi unions have a lot of control in city council and have blocked it. Idk how true it is but that's what I've always heard.

The airport is super close to Downtown, though, so it's convenient enough to take buses to the Airport. They are talking about building a people mover from the airport to a nearby light rail station.

@@alexhaowenwong6122 There is a shuttle from Middletown trolley stop to airport and a super easy bus from Santa Fe. It's easier than the current Union Station-LAX bus system because it is so close.

There are plans to reorganize Middletown station to include a people-mover to the airport; though I’m not sure how since portions of runway are located adjacent to the plan. San Diego Airport has had taxi union leverage against station extensions to the it, but the proximity it enjoys to downtown and coastal areas makes it fantastically easy to take buses, shuttles, or even walk to downtown from the airport (20 minutes by foot with a weekend bag, or a short 10-minute bike ride). I think that there are transit projects far more important than a link to the airport; mid-city, south San Diego, and east county could benefit from rapid buses or line extensions, as well.

I recently got a job up in La Jolla and the new extension in November would make my life so much easier. It would only be a short walk from one of the new stops to my job. No more running to catch buses at 7am for me soon

I live next to Mission San Diego Station. I kind of miss when that was the end of the line because the trains sat there for 15 minutes so you never missed one LOL. I kind of wish they had kept some redundancy but it looks like, with the expansion of the Blue Line, some is coming back. A note on pronunciation; the G in Gillespie is pronounced as a hard G. American Plaza, which would make more sense is actually America Plaza.

Underground stations are more expensive to construct than elevated stations like the ones on the Mid-Coast Trolley.

Hi Zack I just wanted to tell you first off as an employee of MTS thank you so much for your coverage of our system I would like to notify you we have future plans for a copper line that will be going from El Cajon to Santee as a shuttle we will be using the same trains AKA trolleys to serve this infill shuttle like service. Also we have the rapid 227 now which goes to Imperial Beach via Otay Mesa just wanted to give you an update

Originally when Mission Valley was started, the planning called for what is now known as Fenton Parkway to be named as Mission City Parkway. The Street of that name is just across the San Diego River from the Fenton Parkway Station. Also, when Middletown Station opened it was originally known as Middletown/Palm Street and the Palm Avenue stop in South Bay was originally called Palm City.

Here’s a possibility I would like to see. A line that goes from the Morena Blvd stop to major stops at USD, Mesa College, Clairmont, Kearney Mesa, and Tierrasanta. Another one can stop in Balboa Park, Hillcrest, North Park, Normal Heghts, and City Heights. The trick is to get up to the slightly higher elevation of the mesas where these places are located.

I think a suspended cable car system north from downtown via park blvd, university heights, then crossing over mission valley, and connecting the canyons and neighborhoods of Serra Mesa, San Carlos, and westward toward USD would be so convenient and a magnet for tourism, to boot.

Spot on that Hillcrest, North Park, Normal Heights, City heights proposal. The busiest bus route in the MTS system, the 7, runs through that area. The Rapid 215 is also one of the busiest routes. The El Cajon/University Blvd corridor is very dense and largely low-income. Would get phenomenal ridership, very walkable area. If they build it, they should tunnel and elevate all of it because it would be a shame to build a Trolley in that area that isn't any faster than driving down University Blvd. You could end the line at SDSU or La Mesa.

You read my mind. Those areas are all underserved by any form of transport other than the buses that nobody dares take! Jk. It just takes hours to get anywhere by bus. I miss car2go so bad.. f them for leaving haha

@@alexhaowenwong6122 I personally think this is what they should have built instead of what is currently the mission valley segment of the green line. That route runs parallel to the 8 and there's nowhere you can go on it that isn't faster than just driving. In general, I think fixed rail transit in San Diego would be much more profitable if it was focused on high density neighborhoods away from freeways where it would be faster than traveling by car.

Personally, I think Orange should be the line that goes up to La Jolla so that Blue can do the full downtown loop like orange used to do. Then you could easily access blue line stations from any point in downtown and green and orange would both cover half of downtown with multiple overlap and transfer points between them. I would also like to see coaster service extended south to national city in regular service. Or at the very least to the convention center / petco park for event service.

@@anitrain More like the residents of La Jolla being less transit-educated than about Orange Line riders transferring at 12th Imperial. Had SANDAG and MTS proposed a one-seat ride on the Orange Line into UTC from the Southeast, La Jolla would've thrown a fit. A one-seat ride to the border is gonna be a better sell to a rich person in La Jolla than a one seat ride from an area of San Diego with the highest crime rates to one of its jewels of wealth.

Could open up more job opportunities, and i don't mean this in a stereotypical way - but for example, maids, Nannies, cleaners who work for the rich, or just in La Jolla and northern areas of the county; and just in general. Rather than people taking four hour bus journeys for minimum wage.

I used to live in San Diego, from June to September 2014, in La Jolla. The Blue Line did not reach La Jolla back then, but there were plans to extend it from Old Town to UCSD. I first took the SD Trolley on Friday 6th November 1999 and I was staying near the La Mesa Blvd station.

This was such a great video! So happy to have found your channel. Here's an opinion from a lifelong SD transit goer: While the trolley in SD is AWESOME and I have so few complaints about it, the bus network here is just awful. Long waits, not enough buses on weekends, and they're not as well priced as they were when you could get a transfer. The real problem that the bus deficiencies create for the trolley is that once you get to one of the trolley stops, if you need to go just that last mile or two, you might as well get an uber or walk if possible. Something that takes 20 minutes in a car will take upwards of an hour on the bus. All the time and money you save on the trolley is ultimately wasted on the buses, sometimes needing to jump between several bus lines, and it just prompts more people to feel like our transit system isn't worth funding, exacerbating the issues they already have.

I used to live in Seattle, Seattle MTS serves 2x as many people as SDMTS at 6x the funding. SDMTS is actually quite efficient if you consider this fact. The budget just needs to be 3x higher to properly accommodate a population the size of San Diego’s.

@@_audacity2722 Yes, couldn't agree more. That's a big ol' budget but we would have to view it as something that's a public service, instead of a revenue stream. I have a feeling the trolley pulls a lot of weight for our budget too, because our buses tend to be either packed (which is rare and only during certain times of day) or totally empty. We need better data on where people need to go to iron that out.

Great video! I rode the first line from downtown to San Ysidro when I was a kid. Once small mote: Gillespie is pronounced with a "guh" sound. Like a fish's gills. (Lots of our names in San Diego are odd, like Otay doesn't rhyme with Okay. It's pronounced Oh-tie).

There is some new stuff that happened. 2023: the Parking lot at Iris Avenue was closed, to build a new bus station for route 907 and 934. At the same time, Rapid 227 began service on October 15th, officially replacing route 950 FUTURE: 2024: later in 2024, Rapid 227 is expected to get a bus lane on the direction to imperial beach (probably) Proposals for the Palm Avenue trolley stations parking lot to be replaced with apartment buildings are underway

Although the Blue Line extension doesnt go past UTC, there is free parking at most stations including a big multistory unit at Noble Drive. I park there a lot as it saves about 10 miles of driving when I go between Oceanside and San Diego.

There was plans to have the purple line go from downtown to Escondido mall however they clashed with north county transit . Then route 235 was born and the purple line was forgotten.

I live out in east county, just east of elcajon, ther transit system in elcajon needs way more stuff, there are some buslines, but often they get stuck in traffic. I dont know if it is just generally bad city planning or what, but there is tons of traffic at normal times of the day, not even in rushhour. The main problem I think is too many cars for the area, I just know that the stuff that we do have is not enough, one or 2 stations in elcajon for the trolley is nowhere near enough to get people out of their cars, if people are heading to downtown, they drive, because no one is going to back track to the station. The only time i end up using the trolley is if i am going to downtown to an event that is going to generate traffic, be it a baseball game or comic con. Just out in east county, there is a big need for more transit.

I worked a transit surveying job once and hat to survey drivers and riders of several routes. There’s a route called the 892 that’ll take you to Borrego Springs; I have to admit, despite the lack of routes and connections in east county, the fact that there’s a semi-regular service to such an isolated community is quite awesome. But yeah; El Cajon, Santee, Lakeside, Alpine, and even Julian need better, more regular connections. The amount of beautiful places in the county inaccessible to residents who for any reason are careless, is kind of sad.

San Diego has done very good in recent years with its expansion of rapid and trolley services, but there are key neighborhoods that are pitifully underserved, with routes that cease operation on Sundays. For example; if you live in Clairemont and need to head south to Old Town on a Sunday after 7:30pm, you’re screwed. Are you downtown on a Sunday night and need to get to OB, PB, or other coastal neighborhoods? Get ready for a painful 1-hour commute requiring 1-2 transfers, or nothing at all if it’s after 9pm. I get that we’re not Manhattan by any means, but public transit is sometimes almost punitive to take in this city.

Yeah our coastline is about 40 miles from Oceanside to downtown! Not quite visually to scale here lol. The image looks like a neat organized little system but man is it limited, and spread the F out!

After riding both the light rail AND their commuter rail last month, I think for the Coaster, between the Sorrento Valley & Old Town stations, they should build a viaduct to significantly smooth out that slow zone just south of the I-5/805 split. That alone will make service significantly faster and a bit competitive to driving the entire way back & forth from San Diego & just about Oceanside. Much less for Amtrak service to which I also presume shares the very same alignment?

You would need a tunnel through Miramar Hill. The tunnels at Del Mar and San Clemente are much bigger priorities, since there won't even be freight trains until those situations are fixed. The Miramar Hill situation is probably pending the extension of HSR via Riverside and Escondido.

55 years ago I was 10 years old. Some Saturdays, my friends and I would take the SD Transit bus from our SDSU neighborhood to the San Diego Zoo. They had free admission for kids under 12!

A question.....do the various lines on that 'core' central section that sort of loops around all mainly share the same trackage, or does each line have its own dedicated trackage in that area? I can't tell for sure from this simplified map, as the respective separate streets in the area are not shown. And what about the three-line section north of the central area----shared trackage also, or separate?

All the lines share the same tracks, which form a loop around downtown. The only exception is the Coaster, which is a commuter rail line and not light rail. In that case, the tracks are parallel to each other.

Some where in my map collection, I have a map of now downtown San Diego's street car. I think it was the early 1900's. Also, when the now Blue Line opened up in 1981, it was called the Tijuana Trolley.

When I moved here back in 2004, I asked an old Mexican guy for instructions on the trolley and he kept calling one of the lines the “Tijuana trolley”. I had no idea he meant the blue line until I saw that it’s terminus was in San Ysidro.

Also; San Diego should try and bring back a couple of street cars; one going east from downtown to the end of market street or from Golden Hill Park to downtown would be so cool and wouldn’t require additional lanes given the widening of Market Street over 60 years ago.

For people unfamiliar with our expansive coastal county - the map in the video is great, but keep in mind, it's not quite to scale, like maybe with other cities' maps; the SD transit looks like a small system, but essentially that's a 40-mile section of coastline going North-South, crammed into one image. I know it's a rough idea. Not trying to nitpick 😂 just saying. From top to bottom, if you're driving, it could take an hour in traffic. Or more. From Oceanside at the top (which is basically on the border with Orange County), to go downtown? Around 38 miles.

I am curious base how the future expansions section is decided. Some videos have and others don't with a visible rhyme or reason to it. What is the criteria for including a futures expansions for a given system film?

In the past the author has stated that he includes expansions that have been approved and usually funded. If it is just planned that is usually not grounds for inclusion as we all know how many "planned" projects never get built.

I always thought a "Tram" was a single car that was exclusively street running while the San Diego Trolley calls them "trolleys" they are considered LRV's (light rail vehicles) because they mostly run on exclusive rail road right of way with only the downtown loop being street running.

No one in the US calls it tram. It's Trolley or Streetcar. Modern systems with grade separation is Light Rail.

I'm from San Diego, and I have learned a lot from this video! For instance, I didn't know our MTS renamed so many trolley stations a lot, or that the stretch of track between Convention Center and 12th and Imperial Transit Center was once it's own line! Thanks for the video!

Coming around the year "never" is a trolley extension to the airport. It's an obvious solution to a problem that gets ignored year after year. Also, if you ever want to see a running of the bulls in the US, check out the crowd running across the street from Santa Fe depot to America Plaza to go from the green line to catch the blue line. Changing that portion was cruel.

@@brtecson Yes, there's the 992 bus. It's good for people going south from the airport but not as good for people going north. But the idea of an actual trolley extension is taking forever.

And soon (or basically 2040-2050) *Trolley:* Blue Line will be extended once more from San Ysidro to Mira Mesa via Sorrento Mesa, UTC and Old Town Orange Line will be extended from Courthouse to Pacific Beach via San Diego International Airport (may be liberty Station first) Purple Line will be from San Ysidro transfer to Blue Line to Kearny Mesa via Westfield Plaza Bonita, 47th street and Stadium station *Silver Line:* Main one will go from 12th and Imperial to La Mesa Another one from Downtown to North Park via Golden Hill One from Little Italy to Hillcrest

Unfortunately it takes almost 3 hours to connect the two downtowns (approximately 120 miles). Even with some slow-and-go traffic using a car can often be faster.

yes, you can, but you either have to take the infurquent Amtrak train, or get a connection from the coaster to la metrolink in oceanside, ive gone to orange county before using the amtrack, but there were only 2 trains that day, so had to wait there longer than you should to go back, we got there around 10, were soposed to go back at 6, didnt happen because a train derailed, fun times waiting there and no one told anyone who was waiting, just great

For anyone unfamiliar with the geography of San Diego, It should be noted that this video displays route maps published by MTS which have almost no relationship to true geographical features. The routes are displayed in an exaggerated way so that routes and stops might be easier to read, but have either a passing or no relationship to where the routes actually are. Examples are... The route to the Mexican border is north/south, the map depicts the route as east/west. The lines extending eastward are positioned in relation to San Diego Bay far northward than it actually runs The lines that run through east central San Diego and Downtown San Diego are exaggerated. So, if you're a visitor to San Diego, don't rely entirely on the MTS maps... Have a real map also available or use Google Maps (which integrates schedules, too so that it's a one stop shop for planning your travel).

It's pretty low density. The population is spread fairly evenly over an ~800 square mile urbanized region. Lots of auto oriented suburbs.

a BART-style regional metro was once planned, if i recall correctly, but it was scrapped in favour of light rail due to cost or something

@@DavidCiani its not low density, its that the high density areas are spread out, like lamesa and elcajon are kindo of medium high density in their centers, but they are far from the high density areas along the coast. thats why east county dont get shit for public transit, to get from where people live in elcajon to the station, you pretty much need a car, it kinda sucks where they put it.

This is great. Currently living in SD I'm a big fan of the extension planned for this year. Having moved here from Detroit, it would be absolutely hilarious to see Detroit's map and how it so starkly juxtaposes with San Diego's in terms of both spread and efficiency.

$6 for a day pass to ride all the buses and trolleys you want. I used to use it when I lived in SD and I still use public transportation when I visit on vacation.

Selling naming rights for stations or transit lines just feels gross. So many things are branded or sponsored nowadays. Governments should just fund systems adequately. Otherwise, SD looks like a cool network!

Spanish systems had to do a similar thing selling naming and advertising rights to stations. Dubai is also full of that, and Singapore. It has been mooted in London too.

2019 Trolley ridership was on par with Portland (despite San Diego having much worse land use than Portland). SD Trolley seems to like to do things the budget way. The new Mid Coast Trolley cost a fortune because the hilly terrain meant that the line had to be 100% grade separated, including 4 miles of elevated track. Which means they have to cut costs by building cheap stations (and selling naming rights). Good news is that the Mid Coast Trolley will be super fast for a light rail.

Because the people living there are very opposed to it, the hardest part about building new lines is politics... People will make a fuss about parking and car lanes being removed, and about the "wrong kinds of people" being "shipped into" their neighborhoods

You may want to update this video. There are now plans for a purple line which will offer service to mid-city neighborhoods such as City Heights most likely extending along University Ave or El Cajon Blvd.
