When I was a kid, Suburbans were the cars my friends' moms used to shuttle us around town. In this video we meed Grady, who turns these 20-year-old soccer mom-mobiles into extremely capable and very comfortable off-road campers. These things are beasts. This video is a complete tour of one of the builds he makes through his company, Suboverland. We're talking vanlife in an Suburban. We're talking overlanding in style. We're talking an awesome rig that is much more affordable than you think.

Suburbans are extremely underrated vehicles for overlanding. Cheap, reliable, capable of light wheeling, not to mention they made millions of them. Save the money you could have spent on a land cruiser and invest in a RTT and fridge and you're set

He's lucky he's not in the food industry, he'd be licking rocks right now. Sounds as though you just want to bag on him! For those who are hating. Well you can either pay several more times the price for a nice fancy build or you can pay way less and still get something that serves its purpose. And yeah sure it may be something one can build themselves if you have the time, basic skills, tools and a plan. He laid it out for everyone on what to expect and was honest about it. Respect for that.

Yeah no kidding. I bought mine for 3200. I’ve rebuilt the tranny, front end, rear end, redone all the brakes for towing, window motors, etc, etc, damn near rebuilt it, and I still want to drop a Monster Transmission in it, but I have probably between 12-15k so far into it with the cost of the vehicle, so I can say what he’s selling is spot on price wise, in fact if it were me, I’d probably sell them for closer to 20k , so he’s offering an excellent value

I really dig what Suboverland is doing, taking a proven platform amd making it better with a simple and useable camping set up. I currently own a Sprinter, I'm afraid to drive it anywhere because it's hard to find part's for other than ordering them online. GM truck parts a plentiful and cheap. The people buying $20k cargo vans, building a homemade camper interior in them and thinking they're worth $80k + are out of their minds!

I purchased a 2002 Chevy Tahoe Z71 4WD, new, in April 2002. I still own the vehicle and drive it nearly every day. It just turned 369,000 miles on the original 5.3L engine and is showing no visible/noticeable signs of wearing out any time soon. You young cats are wise to make the 2000-2006 Tahoe your "conversion vehicle of choice".

I’ve been tweaking my suburban into this for the last 6 yrs. 1996 1500 4x4 5.7L V8 41 gal fuel tank 240k miles. Best beast in the world. Just a little side...whatever for the Suburbans value....I was at post and a CHP officer came in out of the rain. We were all just sitting around doing paperwork, cooking, and whatnot....he asked who’s suburbans sitting outside. I told him it was mine. He offered me cash. I just laughed and said no thanks. He said do you know what a new one costs...I said yes, yes I do, and that’s why I won’t sell it. So just to say these are excellent vehicles. I’ve had mostly minimal problems. I’m not sure what they run to fix for an 06, but it fairly inexpensive to maintain a 96.

VERY impressive. But one major quibble re: Grady's comments about the powertrain: The 4-speed transmission is painful to live with if you are changing elevations much in your travels (and especially if towing). And the internal filter is the transmission's weak link. When that plastic casing begins to fail, the transmission loses pressure to circulate the fluid and you're done. Repair shops (like NAPA Auto Care) share Grady's opinion of the vehicle and the powertrain...with that exception.

That's awesome. I just use the 3rd row seat folded and turned, a piece of plywood (for an extension), and some camping airpads for a bed on road trips. I also have a 12v cooler and big dometic fridge from my otr days, and a jackery 1000 to power accessories and not kill my battery. It works quite well for me, as I need the unmodified space for hauling family and goods when I'm not on a road trip. I actually moved across the country with my setup in the middle of summer. It worked quite well, as anything more temperature sensitive could go in the car and everything else fit in a 6*12 U-Haul trailer (I did have a moving company move most of my furniture).

I love what you’re doing here! These are a great idea and really well thought out. I have a ‘98 with only 121,000 and it’s a beast, runs like a champ. (BTW, the ‘90’s Suburbans have a 42 gallon gas tank, not 41) :-). Keep it up, these are great! BTW, your fit/finish is better than SMB. Trust me- I bought one in 2017 and everything started to fall apart right away. After 7 months of repair after repair (and their blatant homophobia against us), we just sold the thing. Ours leaked (badly) the fit/finish was just terrible, the ceiling pieces came down, and of course the electric top squealed like a pig until it finally broke. We only had it for 7 months before getting rid of it. YOURS, however are the perfect vehicle for what they are intended for. And at ~$12,000, it’s a freaking steal!! I would have this done to my truck in a heartbeat. If you guys ever start up-fitting customer’s trucks, let me know! Again, very impressed.

I'm the original owner of a 1995 4WD Suburban that just turned 150k miles...my former career had me flying across the country, so the Suburban was usually parked at airports, so the low mileage. I now use it mainly for photography outings, both day trips and overnight. My vehicle has the barn doors, and I was thinking of doing something like this conversion, but having an issue with the full size spare which Chevy unfortunately mounted inside the vehicle. I want to avoid putting it on the roof, so looking for a rear bumper/swing arm combo to mount the tire. But nice work on the conversion, and the price is very reasonable...especially for someone like me that already has the vehicle. The downside for me is the gas mileage...with highway speed limits at 70 and 75, my Suburban gets about 13-14 mpg when running the A/C. With a 40-gallon tank it really starts to add up.

I am really excited to see someone is making a capable overlander at a very affordable price. Very few compromises and decent looking work. The $100,000 models are very nice but NOT affordable for most retirees. I like the clever design on the drawers that slide out both ends for different purposes. Very clever. Thanks for all the info. Great video.

It’s also a good idea to put vent holes for your electrical box so the batteries won’t overheat and they will breathe

He is very right about the mileage on the suburbans typically you would only get 300,000 miles out of a car if you get more out of a vehicle you would want to replace the motor transmission etc. but with this suburbans I had one a couple years back I think I got well over 450,000 miles out of it before she just said no more LOL

My vehicle is my home, so I want a little more than that... but I can see how fun that would be to jump in and weekend warrior, or even extended trips. Cool build with simple ideas. Great job!
