Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

For the greenhouse critter problem, dig out the dirt floor a few inches, put down hardware cloth (wire mesh), and replace the dirt. That stops them from coming up through the ground. For the door issue with pollinators, cut the door in half so you can shut the bottom half while letting the pollinators in through the top half.

Maybe also winterise the place by removing the plants and everything else that rats would see as food. Also shut the water off and drain the lines. 😊 By removing the plants before they die and rot. You also avoid the mildew and other fungi in there

We had a rat in our greenhouse that had dug a tunnel. We ended up laying galvanized steel cloth mesh on the floors and bottom of the beds since they cannot chew through. It was so worth it and haven't had any problems since. Rats are creatures of habit and don't stray from their paths once established.

I have a pet chipmunk that my cats brought home when it was a baby, it's pretty big now but the cage its in with hamster wheel the cell size is about inch by inch squares and it can squeeze through. he tries to chew on the cage like trying to escape but its merely gnawing his teeth down. rats and squirrels and chipmunks can move their bones around and fit through tiny holes.

You should absolutely get a cat! Just the scent of a cat nearby can deter pests. You could work with your local shelter or humane society to take in a semi-feral cat as a “barn cat”. You would guarantee that they have a warm place to sleep, food and water, and vet care, but the cat would live outside.

As a pest control technician this is DANGEROUSLY INCORRECT!!! In fact, it’s one of the most dangerous myths . Mothballs are a pesticide. When exposed to the air, the pesticide turns into a gas that you are inhaling and it is lethal at worst and causes brain damage at best. It literally says right on the packaging not to have it out in the open. And that it is against federal law to use it in anyway that is not intended on the packaging . You’re supposed to have it in an enclosed container with clothing in it that you were trying to kill moths off of. It’s not for mice. The rule is If you can smell mothballs you are poisoning yourself.

When planting seeds like that it can help to put plastic domes or plastic wrap (not sure what you guys call it but it’s the stuff you use to cover food) on them until about 2/3 of the tray have sprouted. It helps with water retention and stops the top of the soil to dry out especially when located near a heat source, like a fire. Very excited to watch how this year’s planting turns out for you.

Wow you have done a great job on this video, I love seeing all the shots that aren't cut, and Thanks for all your Content, your place is so Beautiful, well organized, or if it's not organized, you find a way to make it work BETTER. I love that like how you put the wood in crates to move it easier, or how you organized your work shed for tools. The way you organized your spare bedroom, Great job

Helpful tip (from a former ranch foreman) as well for both rodent and unwanted insects away; 1. Place Wired mesh about 6-8 inches beneath the flooring of you choice (I.E. top soil, dirt, or gravel, and etc.) 2. Plant wild mint both in and around your greenhouse (and other place you’d want to deter critter from making that place their home) [Note: this can be done with other plants as well google search what plants deter what insect/rodent you’d want to deter them] 3. (By far the most expensive out of all 3) have a homestead cat. This will obviously keep unwanted animals away but may attract other unwanted animals as well. But this will prevent rodent populations on the homestead.

What a fun video! I can tell that you girls had a nice break by the sea. When you’re working as hard as you girls, a reprieve in a completely different latitude makes all the he difference in the world in your sense of well being! Everything looks great! What the heck were you making for dinner?!? I could practically smell it through the phone. Welcome back to the wilderness 😘!

Put wire cloth on ground and then cover that with mulch or rock. We also did this for our fenced in garden. Put wire cloth all the way around the outside ground also, 2 feet out. Get a screen door with a window that can open that way pollinators can come and go.
