The thing that really draws me into these videos are to hear your mental images on the music you listen to. Too often the review of an album stays on the mechanics, but disregards the effect the music has. The ontology of music is personal, but I think talking about it is the most meaningful way of communicating about it. I love music theory, but if that is on the front and center, you might miss the bigger picture. Thanks Pad, really great video as always!
@PadChennington
@PadChennington 6 жыл бұрын
Yes Ellotus, thanks! I agree, music is arguably the most subjective thing to exist, obviously just one of the many children of art in general but with how much passion musicians and music fans have alike I think proper discussion will only influence eachother as a community and create more expansive stuff. Instead of ranting my opinions or only talking about the mechanical build up of certain albums, my goal is to discuss both and build my channel off of discussion in the comments. Interaction and communication is key in today's digitally crammed world :)

Albums like 'Yes! We're Open!' and PowerPC ME's 'Kmart 1989-1992' take me back to a different time, when Kmart and David Jones had restaurants, the NES and SMS had just come out and were blowing my young mind. Spending weekends with a group of friends, watching TMNT or Robocop or some other VHS rental from the local video store at one of our houses, after going to the local arcade and passing by the corner shop to stock up on mixed lollies and sugary treats, ready for a binge fest of hyped up jumping around the room during fight scenes, while we were filled to the eyeballs on chemicals we couldn't pronounce and candy made in Mexico. They take me back to a time I remember fondly, but ever more fleetingly. When consumerism was king and everything felt more 'real' than it does now. I think that's why I love vaporwave and futurefunk so much, is that while some people can feel the nostalgia, even though they were never there, hopefully without sounding like a 'back in my day', those of us that were around occasionally find tracks that make us overwhelmed, or even left feeling blindsided by waves of memories of a time that felt like it would never end and the sun would shine on us eternal. A time that felt like we were living in an 80's commercial. I am not ashamed to admit, sometimes it comes on so strong I find myself with a tear in my eye. /ramble Your videos are great Pad, you have an awesome way with words and always seem to be able to bring forward the deepest meanings and feelings out of the music you talk about. Keep em coming!

Wow thanks for such an awesome response, you painted a picture pretty well there... Feeling like we were living in an 80s commercial. Going to blockbusters to play demos on those bulky ass N64 kiosks. I can smell it from here. Somehow when I was a kid, I fantasized about having an entire grocery store for myself. Like, me owning it, living inside and being able to take whatever I wanted without having to pay. It was a specific store we had here, which was basically a grocery store that also had miscellaneous items for sale, kinda like Walmart does now. Back then, where I live (not in the US), this kind of store was pretty rare and sort of novel (we're speaking of back in like, 1997). Everytime my parents went there they'd allow me to roam around while they shopped for groceries (again, back in the 90s parents weren't as protective as they are today :P ) and I felt this kind of general comfort walking around the toy aisle. I remember they had a N64 station to try out games that were about to release/just released and that's where I played Majora's Mask for the first time! Got it the very next Christmas. Anyway, good stuff, will continue watching this series.

Comrade Cthulhu Amusingly, the ones I go to now play 80s music. I find it interesting that some supermarkets do so, and in grocery chains that are still around since the 80s (both being in operation and somehow having that look they had back then), it just feels inviting to someone from that era.

I'll always remember our old Walmart, it was connected to a small mall with various outlets and the entrance was lined with a bunch of VHS I remember getting our copy of Peter pan from there alot of good memories it's usually one of the places I think of when I feel nostoligc as well as a flea market the buildings are normally empty but with all the stalls set up it's like a odd new world that just stretches on and on, its where we picked up our first puppy, this video and the associated music just give me a relaxed mental trip through those locations when I was super young, also love your videos Pad thanks for getting me into Vinyls

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but there's literally an album called "Music for Supermarkets" by none other than Jean Michel Jarre. A vaporware album from the 80s (yes!) that played once on the radio then never again. For decades there's only been a low quality recording now available on KZfaq, but a small group did a very faithful remake though!

Idk whether I want vapor and synthwave (etc) to go mainstream so everyone can enjoy or for it to stay niche and private

It's a really good video and all, but I feel like I wasn't able to hear anything over your voice. If you'd just fade your voice out and let each track highlight itself for about 5 to 10 seconds that'd be amazing. I feel like I just listened to you talk about the songs, but didn't get a chance to actively listen to anything.

Zachy baby, twas intentional! I never put the actual songs in my video, as I want the focus to be on the discussion of them and hope to drive people from my video to each respective artists music so they get the listens/hits directly!

Now I feel like an idiot. That's a great strategy actually. I was thinking about your video earlier today and realized that there was probably some reason for it. Also, thank you for properly explaining the magic of supermarkets. As someone who is living abroad in Asia, I get the fattest smiles on my face when I go to a supermarket at like 12 at night, and could just stand there and listen to the odd music they play there forever. To think most people don't stop and reflect upon the wonders of our supermarkets in the world. Anyways, thanks brotha, I'm subscribing to you for sure now.
