Here are the last 4 from Hamilton last week when I spent the day with Buckeye Freight Railin` ‪@GY51360‬ and ‪@AdventureswithJoeyBoats‬
We got 4 trains in this video. 3 are Northbound and the Brick is the only Southbound.
"What`s the Brick?" you ask. Well, NS has 2 of these units they take around their system to check the track "geometry" for bad spots and the like. The measuring instruments are mounted on the "locomotive" looking thing in the middle of the train and the computer readout stuff is in the passenger car at the rear as I understand it. Here is a little better description of the units and how they work.
"NS has two active track geometry train sets.
The one you mention consists of NS Research platform 38 "The Brick", which was rebuilt using the frame and trucks of former NS/NW EMD SD40 1620. It contains sensing and measuring equipment for track geometry and rail profile (rail wear), as well as the power supply for itself and NS Research car 36, and is weighted to deflect the track. The Research 36 car contains the recording and processing equipment for the data supplied by NS 38.
The second set includes NS Research 34 platform, which was built on the frame and trucks of what was originally N&W SD35 1530. It is mated with NS Research car 33. This pair works in the same manner as described with NS 38/36
The center cab locomotive that is on the flat car is from the Lhoist Railroad in Tennessee. They are a limestone hauling railroad for their only customer, which is themselves.
Thanks for watching!

Good morning, Scott thanks for filming and getting your grass cut(lol), just in time for some more rain. We are starting to heat up today. Our unreliable weather people said the heat would be back Thursday, but they missed it. Suppose to be about 91 today, then the cooker will be turned on for Thursday thru Sunday, but afternoon and evening showers, that cools things back down. Have a good one, Scott.

that center cab was probably headed to Bucyrus for work! i forget the company name but they used to build those over in Plymouth about 4 miles south of Willard but about 25 to 35 or so years back they moved all their building to the Bucyrus plant!! that's a 45 ton they used 15 and 25 ton models too! i was told they built the engines for the Panama canal locks too! that intermodal!! 2 miles long on one engine!! and it had enough pepto pink boxes!! you almost get the trots just looking at all of them!! that geometry job that's the first good look at the back of one i've got i never knew they were seats back there i thought that big window was for sensors!!

I have seen videos of those locomotives at the Panama Canal. That is a very slick setup they got there for those ships. Yes, the back window of that car is for viewing the track. If you look closely, you can see the guys in there working as it passed by.

Great videos! Glad business is brisk! You’ve caught the Geo brake several times. Someone asked last week the name of the street that runs parallel to the tracks. It’s called Witt’s Way and 5th Street. I came from Oxford last Sunday and took a detour from St Rt 127 to get the name. Btw- on a couple streets back, French Bauer (ice cream) had a plant there (over 100 yrs ago) and oh! There was a Ferromax Sunday running through Hamilton (approx noon) 👍🏼😁

Good made video, mr 1960 Gambit. Nice to see the Brick, since the early 90 use 2 railbuilder company rebuilded postrailcars with the names Jules and Agnes. Along the siding is a good spot but watch also the road traffic. Last train brings new rails there in Hamilton but how long are these rails. Here in the Netherlands rails for renewing are 650 meters. But what i see on that cars these rails i guess 1 mile. Thx for this topvideo in Hamilton 🚆🚆👍💪👌🚆. Greet from Zandvoort the Netherlands.

The geometry train measures the track and inspects it for bad spots that need to be fixed and marks them. It`s called The Brick because of its color and shape.
