We test and review the new Varjo Aero--a virtual reality headset with the best image quality and display clarity we've used in a consumer/prosumer HMD. Here's an in-depth look at the Varjo Aero's technology, display and optics, and how it runs our favorite VR games. The Aero makes it difficult for us to go back to our older VR headsets, but its display fidelity comes at a cost: high system requirements and a $2000 price tag.

I can see why you said that Wiggins. For me personally, the headset needs to be more accessible, high resolution, and no distortion. I.e. form factor needs to improve. This headset is comfortable but it's way too complicated to put on which makes it a choir. The Project Cambria HMD is more like it which makes it more accessible. The second point of course is the software, I play VR a lot still but only because I love MSFS. If you haven't found your MSFS title in VR yet then that is a problem the industry needs to address to make more titles compelling in VR. It's going to be a few more years yet but we'll have a moment when things switch around dramatically and desktop gaming will be retro gaming. Already VR Flight Sim Guy youtuber with his Aero has a desktop in VR which is way more clear than his 1080p monitor but go figure he's a VR nut, so why would he game on his tiny desktop. The future is coming my friend!

Norm, I really appreciate your in-depth review. Its interesting to hear the intricacies of lens shape, and how that effects images towards the end of the screen. I like that you used a relatable example to demonstrate that, with your description of how the railing bends at the opening set piece of half life alyx. I was reading online that this headset comes with in-ear headphones, but you said it had no included audio. Was your headset an early review sample? And on the part about how much clearer things look in VR, I can only imagine how good it looks. I recently upgraded my gpu from a GTX 1070 to an RTX 3080ti and I saw the biggest improvement in VR. Things look so much clearer with the resolution super sampling being set to 150% or 200% instead of the normal 100%. There is so much detail in the models of HL:A so you can really notice the improvement. I'm having a hard time imagining it looking even clearer!

20:11. It seems like this could be resolved in software. Just to make VR work you have to pre-distort the image. Seems like by extension, they could further refine their distortion map to correct for the fall off you're describing.

True but if you think about it we might have an "oldie" but it's definitely a "goodie" if you think about the total package that was the full up CV-1 ie. With touch controllers. It's pretty comfortable, has some good headphones, good mike, accurate base stations. And for me if I'm in VR why do I want to have a bunch of lights on? I have practically everything in my house switched off when I'm in VR. The CV-1 is still getting high reviews from people the only universal "But" is the dated resolution. I get the feeling most of us CV-1 users really wish we could just get the guts pulled out and replaced with up to date lenses.

Facebook isn't giving you a rebate because they're so rich; they're giving you a vr headset for 50% cash, and unlimited datamining and forced advertisements. They're planning on making their money on the backend, rather than upfront. So if you don't mind being tethered to an always online service dedicated to mining your personal information with a future full of bright, shiny ads injected into your VR games - then Quest is good value.

Working at a large institute in the EU, we have to contend with strict data processing regulations. The great thing about Varjo is that they're an EU country, which means they already have to comply with existing regulations. I'm seeing them pop up all over the place, because the tide is turning against Meta and Pico. If only Varjo would release a standalone headset, they would take over the professional market here.

It makes me nervous when you say this is the headset you would get "if I had unlimited funds." Because it's not only the headset you have to consider. The computer that drives that headset also has to go into that consideration as the more resolution you have in the headset the more power in terms of CPU and GPU you will need to properly drive that headset. So, at this point I see this whole setup costing as much as a used car. Not really within the reach of most of us.

Omg this is such a fantastic video. Subscribing. Thank you for the explanations and history. I got my wallet out when you mentioned the 70 ppd because my use case is productivity and general computing instead of games. Also thanks for doing text and productivity analysis and review. Too bad for this version but I am going to keep an eye on this brand. Would love recommendations if you think there is a headset that maybe isn’t great for gaming but good for productivity.

Plenty of people are willing to pay ~$1k for a phone, so I think there will be plenty of people who'd be willing to pay $2k for a top-tier headset. But at the same time, there would have to be enough content to want to use VR everyday, in the same way we use our phones/PCs everyday.

I keep waiting (and waiting) for a good, affordable VR solution. Sounds like I'll have to keep waiting. Currently, it's a technology for well-heeled gamers only. For one thing, I'll need to upgrade my video card which is nearly impossible to do today without dropping $1k+. And while the Varjo Aero sounds terrific indeed, it's also very expensive. BTW Norm, please consider visiting an optometrist and getting your glasses fitted better! Maybe it's just me, but adjusting and readjusting your glasses every few seconds is very distracting. lol!

@@TimvanHelsdingen The software has it's limitations. Currently you can have things set up one of two ways, I find: Either a bunch of virtual desktops that mimic your actual desktops (or dummy desktops through fancy hardware), or you can (like me) set up infinite screenspace, where two primary displays are used to interact with things. These just mirror my physical monitors. Then I surround myself with virtual screens that mirror windows that contain information I need at a glance. Actually interacting with those virtual screens is limited in function though, so all my actions take place on my two primary displays. Some limitations reported don't really affect me, like I don't mind not being able to see me keyboard, and the G2/WMR suite has a neat future where you can turn you controllers into 'flashlights' which peer into reality. When you set them on either side of your keyboard, they illuminate your whole desktop to be seen through VR. Eye strain is real. Various issues surrounding my glasses and how they sit are a concern, but I'm working on that. I work remotely, primarily customer service/tech support stuff.

23:02 I don't know. I think Norm might be reading too much into the availability of the base bill of materials. One thing I learned from investing in the PiMax 8K kickstarter is that building a quality, truly ready for market, headset is seriously hard. The new HTC Vive Pro 2 has pretty beefy 2448x2448 panels, but they used crappy fresnel lenses to pull it together, and they otherwise left the design unchanged from the original Pro, which wasn't very far removed from the original Vive with their deluxe strap, and they priced that at $800 for just the HMD. They priced it for $800, and yet it still has a pretty compromised viewing experience due to the lens design, and improved viewing was the entire point of the headset! They sure didn't spend their R&D/manufacturing budget anywhere else. I think this HMD problem is harder than people realize, and after you factor in aspheric lenses, there may not be as much margin for the competition to exploit as Norm thinks. Especially when you consider the over all R&D and manufacturing setup cost, the quantities of these headsets being sold at the high end may simply not be driving the unit economics any lower than what Varjo is selling their HMDs for. Basically what I'm saying is, if you can't afford the Varjo that is completely understandable. If on the other hand you can, and you're just waiting for something cheaper to come along that's just as good, well, you might be waiting for a while.

Agreed the new panel sound amazing, but my key thing..... this is the second HMD announced in the last week or so that DOESN'T use fresnel lenses which to me, fresnel is VR's biggest drawback, no more glare or godrays and extreme clarity wins it for me. Looking forward to seeing what other manufacturers come up with as long as they don't use fresnel lenses, I'll be happy. As for the Varjo, agreed, too rich for my blood. The Vive Flow has interesting lenses, but here again, too expensive for what it is.

It would be nice to have a VR Standard where all head sets can work interchangeably with other controllers and sensor bases. So when new head sets come out that are better, you just have to worry about the head set and not if it will be compatible with your current controls and base sensors. While some are cross compatible, it can be a real burn out to have to buy a new controller and tracking set. It's like having to buy a new computer because you upgraded your monitor screen. I think that is probably one of the biggest pitfalls of VR adoption.

Still using my 2016 Oculus CV1 (I have my DK1 too, stored safely for posterity). I want my next headset to be a noticable improvement in every way possible: resolution (screendoor...), FOV and tracking. This sounds like a big improvement, but at a price point comfortably 2,5 times higher than the CV1 that's to be expected. Has the VR "quality per $100" (so to speak) improved at all since 2016?

Great job on this! Quick question: It doesn't sound like it matters but is pixel layout known for the panels in this? i.e. full rgb, pentile etc.? I've only really heard of pentile in OLED displays so I doubt it's that, but not all LCD panels have full RGB either so just curious. Also, were you able to experiment with any of the eye-tracking features? If so, does the eye tracking still work while wearing glasses? I've heard glasses can interfere with some eye tracking solutions. And since you have this just a little while longer and mentioned different things to try... - Star Wars Squadrons if you can get it to run well enough. - BigScreen Beta: 3D movies in particular. Could this be the home theater alternative a small number of us might consider? I feel like I could def. watch full length movies in this. Esp. my extensive collection of 3D movies (close to 300). - Any VR pinball stuff such as Pinball FX 2 VR or Star Wars Pinball VR. Might seem like a weird choice but I love VR pinball and the thought of playing it at these resolutions makes me all giggity. - Any VR racing stuff. Also a big racing sim fan and better resolution is always desirable in those. Thanks again! You're the best!

Looks great but honestly at $2000 for just a headset without controllers, base stations, or even included speakers, that's going to be a hard sale for anyone who doesn't have a lot of spare cash with VR as the only thing they put money into for entertainment, or isn't a business with a very specific need for a high-quality headset. One of the biggest gates for VR coming into the mass market is cost, and most people consider the cost of even the most consumer grade headsets, which sell at around $300-400 at minimum, to be a large hurdle. At $2000, this single headset is around the cost of a very high-end computer. To get this setup to work from scratch you are talking about spending at least $5000, which is insanity. You could get a full index kit, and spend the extra $1000 on getting a GPU upgrade that could handle the graphical quality and framerate required to run it. Even considering that this headset is meant to be used by VR hyper-enthusiasts, I can't imagine there are enough of them to make money back on developing this product if being sold at this cost. If you couldn't even get buy-in from Norm, you aren't going to get buy-in from pretty much anyone else. Hope to see the costs come down sooner than later, because I just can't imagine how this would sell well enough for the company to make enough money to justify continuing to sell this product in the future.

I’m honestly very glad it doesn’t come with speakers as that’s one of my main gripes with vr headsets in general. i always use earbuds because the experience is way better than any vr speakers that exist… and the fact that it doesn’t come with controllers is both expected and has the pro of being able to use whatever the current gen tracking solutions are and custom controllers or whatever controllers you want… this is much better than their flagship headset at almost a 50% price cut and with that headset there was an obscene amount of money that was required *yearly* to even use it due to a mandatory software subscription service… this is their first headset that non-companies are allowed to buy at all like they wouldn’t let normal people buy their headsets. you had to prove you were a company and in that sense this is definitely a consumer headset in comparison. the fact that this is lighter than the quest 2 and has the best lenses on the market as well as a ridiculous display and automatic ipd adjustment (ipd adjustment is something that everyone struggles to figure out I’ve noticed since nearly no one actually knows their ipd) this is for sure the best headset that has ever come out. also competing products like the pimax 8KX have a lot of the same caveats people are talking about here but with much more weight and a much worse user experience. that being said, I completely agree with you that $2,000 is a lot of money and even though I really want one I’m not sure I can spend that much on anything right now… but I do want to see varjo succeed immensely. I wish they accepted donations or something.
