Hank introduces us to one of the most diverse and important families in the tree of life - the vascular plants. These plants have found tremendous success and their secret is also their defining trait: conductive tissues that can take food and water from one part of a plant to another part. Though it sounds simple, the ability to move nutrients and water from one part of an organism to another was an evolutionary breakthrough for vascular plants, allowing them to grow exponentially larger, store food for lean times, and develop features that allowed them to spread farther and faster. Plants dominated the earth long before animals even showed up, and even today hold the world records for the largest, most massive, and oldest organisms on the planet.

Xylem=water Phloem=food (sugar) *XY*lem=*W*ater *PH*loem=*F*ood You can remember which ones match up because XY and W are near the end of the alphabet. Also PH and F make the same noise.

Unlike xylem (which is composed primarily of dead cells), the phloem is composed of still-living cells that transport sap. The sap is a water-based solution, but rich in sugars made by photosynthesis. These sugars are transported to non-photosynthetic parts of the plant, such as the roots, or into storage structures, such as tubers or bulbs

Nick Spears 1. Describe how water travels from the to cell to the leaf. Map the way. Water is transported into the roots and enters the xylem. Cohesion and Adhesion cause the water to move through the xylem. It then goes from the xylem in to the mesophyll cells and evaporates through the stomata. 2. How is ground tissue different in the root/stem the the leaf? The ground tissues does not has chloroplast cells/mesophyll cells and does not preform photosynthesis. 3. Describe how the stomata opens and closes. The stomata open due to the guard cells expanding and contracting. The cells expand because of water/turgur pressure. When more pressure is present the cells expand and when there is less pressure they contract and let the stomata open.
