I might be an Atheist but that does not stop me loving the Music, especially Nr.152 Down Ampney, dear Old RVW what a wonderful legacy you have left us, and indeed live on through your beautiful Music. Thank you. Ausgezeichnet.

THANK YOU Mr. Hillier! I too am atheist and I'm an organist as well. Some have accused me of being hypocritical and I tell them that I'm a musician FIRST and that I still love the music only ignoring the text (except for 'Sine Nomine' and 'Ora Labora' as I still love the text from those hymns from my chorister days) and they refuse to accept that. I only go into churches to play the organ as that's my instrument of choice and it's much easier to get into a church to play the organ and especially regularly practice on it than it would be to get into a concert hall that has an organ. When I tell them that I'd gladly take donations towards buying a digital organ to have at home to practice on so that I don't have to go into a church, THAT shuts them up. I LOVE the music of and especially the hymns of Ralph Vaughn Williams who was also an atheist as I've always been told, and he wrote wonderful hymns and his adaptations of some hymns have also been superb. He wrote one of the greatest hymns in church music "For All the Saints" which was the very first hymn that I sang as a chorister as my first service was on All Saints Sunday in 1967 and also that hymn was the first hymn that I learned to play on piano and then the organ. I don't have to believe anything that I don't want to nor am I obligated, nor should I submerge myself in that idiotic man-made dogma that's caused more problems, war and death in this world just to play the organ....

@@bhigdaddymark Dear Mark, Very many Thanks for your lovely Message, I must confess that when I was at School and one had to attend Assembly, the only Hymn I liked was ‘Hill’s of the North’ as the original Words were reasonably acceptable and fairly Secular. Thank you once again, and keep safe.

Vaughan Williams was an agnostic at least, but CLEARLY the Holy Spirit was with him. The Spirit continues in the same way today - He blows where He will, as Jesus said...

I am no longer C of E but the tradition lingers with some affection for old Churches and the Hymns we sang in my childhood, some of them with rattling good tunes. Didn't get to appreciate VW until I was a young man, being first aquainted with a theme of Thomas Tallis, appropriatly enough in a concert in a Cathedral. Have appreciated him ever since, having trod in similar ways through the folk tradition and the arts and crafts brand of socialism. I have been a fiery Baptist since, who sings like a Methodist I was once told during a C of E service. I have also been a morris dancer in my time, I am sure V W would approve.

An interesting comparison between Hughes's version (here) and a big choir, is with Trinity Cambridge's 'Vaughan Williams Hymnal'. Very different, but well worth listening to also.
