Who knew that taking away education, housing, leisure time, counseling and mental health services, work bonuses and benefits, living wages, and retirement in a society with no plan to make the future better....who knew that would end up in misery?

This happens when you live in a predatory economic society unfortunately. We need to get those after school activities back in schools. Students need more music classes, more sports teams, more social groups to share their interest. I'd rather give my tax dollars towards these things, not giving the rich tax cuts and the military.

We just need to remember that no matter your race or gender, the workers of the world must unite to fight against the wealthy elite who are exploiting them and ruining society.

I love that Ana has been pushing this topic more and more. Its important. As a man of colour in my 30s from a low income neighborhood. I am the only progressive I know. I'm a unicorn. Most ppl I know are either apolitical or hate progressives because they feel progressives are always in their face blaming them for stuff. We need to do a better job connecting with men. It's not helpful to say because men have historically always been on top the social ladder we shouldn't hear their issues on an individual level.

Let's face the fact that men's issues are completely disregarded. There are almost no resources for male victims of domestic and sexual assault and the sentencing disparity by gender in our legal system is absolutely insane.

One big problem is ongoing depressed wages. It used to be that any half-wit with a high school diploma could buy a house and a car on a working man's salary. Not everyone is very talented or lucky enough to make their own way. It is sad, and must be very frustrating.

Honestly I think one of the biggest issues we have is just a lack of social spaces for men and women to mix. The few social activities that are normalized for young men are playing sports, playing video games, going to the gym, and drinking. Sports are generally gender-divided, at most you only hear people's voices in video games, most gyms have a culture of people not wanting to talk with each other, and while you can certainly meet and socialize with the other gender while drinking, drinking has it's own problematic subculture. I think we have a huge cultural problem of being anti-social

The left's problem is that we'll rightfully point out that the reason a lot of young men are like this is because of the patriarchy, but that where it ends. There's never a solution or a fix or a road that they're advised to go down and help them.

The only time I see people discuss men being abused, suffering from depression, being lonely, etc., is when someone brings up women suffering that and men’s issues are used as a cudgel rather than being addressed as the serious issues they are.

At this point I have seen countless Jordan Peterson videos, how is nefarious? The gist Of his videos go as follows: If people don't like you maybe it's because you're not a likable person. You should take time to self reflect and if you see things that are odd or wrong then you should take responsibility of those flaws and make changes. Nothing is fair in life but if you can go from a screw up to a mostly competent person then things will greatly improve in your personal experiences. What is possibly wrong with this kind of message?

As a black man with a black son of twenty years, I'm kinda annoyed that left and progressive spaces don't talk about this more and leave this conversation to right wing spaces. The term "toxic masculinity" originated in the mythopoetic men's movement of the 1980s and 1990s. This term refers to the dominant form of masculinity wherein men use dominance, violence, and control to assert their power and superiority. Anger and lust are acceptable emotions to have but men can't cry or express sadness otherwise they will appear weak. Basically, it's machismo (which is not masculinity). This is proof that people know nothing about toxic masculinity. When we talk about toxic food, that does not mean that all the food is toxic. Food can be healthy or toxic. Same with masculinity.

Yes! I've been saying that we need to start looking at hate as a mental health issue. Look how our views on addiction has changed, we need to start looking at hate, bigotry and toxic masculinity as a mental health issue.

You've made a segment about "young men being alienated" and "is the left out of touch with young men" and in the opening segment you've shown three stock photos, one of which had a sad man in it and you've shown the same stock photo with a sad girl twice. You couldn't illustrate the problem to 5 year olds with the right photos, I doubt you can illustrate it with words over the next 15 minutes or so.

I am part of the lonely boy club. I am making over 100k, decent career, I try to be empathetic, looking for a compatible partner. Unfortunately I’m 5’7 and Indian American. I am not scared of being rejected but definitely mortified at being called a creep. I hear that term all the time by women used for average guys. It’s so scary and degrading.

It's true though. There are very very few leftist spaces dedicated to men's issues, but there are loads of right wing sources offering "solutions" to young men. So men who feel alienated for whatever reason just accidentally end up being pulled to the right. Those who are experienced enough to already have strongly formed opinions can recognize and avoid the pull, but the younger or less politically aware don't have that advantage. The left NEEDS to start putting out androphilic material. There's plenty of room for feminist spaces and minority rights, and not every leftist space needs to have a subsection catering to men's issues, but the automatic dismissiveness that is often seen definitely needs to 🛑 stop.

Probably the most important societal problem to address in the short term. Thank you for this discussion and there needs to be more of it and in more nuanced and personal as well as sociological ways. Women's issues are men's issues and the same is true vice versa.

as a stereotypical leftist who spends way too much time online, i don't have a problem with men - i have a problem with the patriarchy that dictates who and what people should be, regardless of gender. but when it comes to men, there are so many expectations of being strong and repressing any emotion other than anger and lust. education should include emotional education and how to express emotions in a healthy way while prioritizing empathy and compassion to yourself and others.

Most people think that uplifting men means downgrading women or ditching feminism. We as leftist, the sincere one, want to uplift everybody. "Male privilege", believe all women, consent cloudiness, lack of confidence (career home ownership schooling) comes up alot with the young men I talk to.

As someone who definitely fit into the category of a lonely young man on the left wing I'm glad this is finally being talked about. There have been times where I felt politically homeless so to speak because I fell to that the left wing had little to offer me particularly when interacting with people who threw around phrases like toxic masculine in a very aggressive way. It always felt like they were throwing it at me. I'm glad to see I was mistaken. I'm also glad to see someone like Vaush take up the mantle of a role model for young men so that we can show them the left wing has far more to offer them than the right-wing does.

I can only speak for myself, and not other men, but I like to be alone. I have lived my life alone. There is a reason I have no female relationships beyond my family. There is a reason I swore off getting married and making kids when I was in my early teen years. People bother me. People are too needy. I felt this way as a teen, and I feel this way as an adult. When I get off from my workday, I have to recharge my I give a fucks just to pretend to give a fuck the next day at work. I cannot possibly be the only male living in the US that feels this way.

One of the biggest problems of the left, imo, is that even they tend to forget that the socio-economical system we have been predicated with fucks us all, INCLUDING men. Discourses of masculinity, how men ought to be and behave, don't only result in toxic and dangerous behaviors for women, these discourses stunt the personal growth of men. Plus, and this has to be said, the culture of the USA itself is a big factor in how men perceive themselves, how men are socialised, and the consequences of it.

Not just "young" men. I'm in my mid 40s, moved to the US 19 years ago, do not have any close friends here, and have felt lonely and alienated ever since I've been here. Something else that should be acknowledged is that aging men have a much more difficult time making friends and close relationships the older they get compared to women of the same ages... There was a statistical breakdown showing this on NPR.

I agree that shaming rarely helps and usually hurts. We need an overhaul of our current system and culture of worshipping business and the free market over all else. There have been many policies put into place that have adversely affected men, and they come from both sides of the political aisle. Under Reagan, unions were busted and manufacturing was outsourced to places where labor was cheaper. Under Clinton, NAFTA was implemented, making a final blow to a lot of our blue collar workers, many of them men. Every adult who can work deserves the right to a decent livelihood at a job where they feel respected and find value working. Every adult deserves to have a life rich with good relationships, including good friends, a partner, and children if they have any. And of course every adult deserves to have the time and resources to work on their own self improvement, through hobbies, professional development, civic involvement, etc. On another note, and IMO, a good portion of the loneliness and alienation men face is due to the fact that young boys and men are socialized early on to not share their feelings and to compete with one another. They mentioned that in the video. Women are often more resilient because they are socialized to talk about their feelings with other women, and not everything is about competition. That socialization is actually a characteristic of patriarchy, which is a system, not code for men. It hurts almost everyone (including most men) and involves almost everyone. We know men are involved, but women are also involved in it, teaching their young boys that boys don't cry, and to act tough. I was astounded to hear that phrase come out of the mouth of a friend of mine when she was speaking with her teary three-year-old boy. I felt sad for him, and disappointed in her. My final thought is that I have heard time and again that the way to keep men from joining extremist groups and becoming more fascist is to re en franchise them in the economy and the society in general. Not an easy task! Especially with current circumstances making it virtually impossible for anyone who doesn't have a lot of higher ed aptitude, and financial resources. It really is unfair, and I don't know what the full solution would look like, but really would like to take part in it if I can.

It's Awesome that Vaush and TYT addressing this issue. I wish he would reach out more to these Manosphere and Redpill communities to combat their simplistic ideology. I know Vaush doesn't like Destiny but he has had great success going on to many of these redpill podcast throughout last year and pulled myself and many men out of this redpill black pill spaces into more progressive healthy circles.
