Can you give an example of a scenario where that would be the case? Personally I think child sexual abuse is something that really changes someone, so it can become hard to image who an individual would be without it. That said suffering and mental illness will always out weight any benefit. And I think it's important that we do look at claims like those, even coming from survivors, with a critical lens. That's the rhetoric that abusers often groom their victims with, and many people who are abused go on to offend themselves. So it's possible for them to be in denial about the harm it did to them, their ability to consent at that age ect. That's why it's important to look at other ways to quantify harm, like data. Of which shows there are no positive outcomes

Going through something traumatic that changes who you are for the better is not the same as being abused as a child and never will be. A child has no way of even knowing what is being done to them and, by the time they do know, it will mess them up and ruin them mentally because they will find out how they have been taken advantage of when they realise what actually happened to them. The "trauma makes people stronger" argument, when being used to refer to children who have had to go through Hell, and must go through Hell every day since, due to what someone else did to them, is disgusting. Actually insane argument with no semblance of compassion at all. Nobody benefits in any way from csa and that is the truth. If you try to argue otherwise then you're a psychopath sorry

There are people who credit past trauma for their ability to handle other aspects of their life in ways they feel they otherwise wouldn't be capable of and this is the case for some survivors of virtually every form of trauma. I have known several people who had experienced abuse (at least the ones I've heard discuss it) of that nature and even within that small sample size, their perception of how their experiences affected them varies completely. The fact that you would insist that all people who went through that "go through hell every day since" shows that you are more interested in grouping people together for your own comfort than caring about or understanding the issue in its entirety. The notion that acknowledging the complicated nature of a bad thing is tantamount to justifying or making excuses for it is just as dangerous as any of Vaush's out of context statements taken at face value. That attitude is part of the reason why we live in a world in which victims often find it excessively difficult to be open about their experience and heal.

It's true that a person can be in denial about what happened to them, but you can't just categorically assume that such is the case for every survivor whose claims about their trauma do not conform to your preconceived notions. Skepticism is valid, but there is a threshold beyond which you are simply dictating to survivors what their experience is. To some of them, what you are saying is essentially that they must forever be considered lesser due to what happened to them, and that their perception and efforts to regain their agency over the matter are something that you wish to deny them, regardless of how much you dress it up as compassion.

He also, in his response, didn't clarify whether he agrees or not with the statement 'it is possible' right now, despite recognizing that it was the problem that the clip existed to highlight. Instead he says "I'm stupid, that's my worst crime, nothing more" exactly like he did with the sexual assault allegations ("I was a creep that was my worst crime, but not a harraser"). Except he later rolled back those statements when it came to his own sexual harassment allegations. I find it interesting that you say my position is talking down to survivors. My opinions are informed by someone close to me who themselves experienced childhood sexual abuse. Do you have record of actually abused people stating this, or are you speaking for victims of childhood sexual abuse? I'm also curious because I feel a very similar argument could be used to defend Milo Yiannopoulos for example, a victim of child sexual abuse, when he said he engaged in relationships with adult men as a minor, and that they were coming of age experiences that actually benefited him. You yourself say, your unsure if it outweighs the suffering. That's because you can't quantify suffering, you decide how harmful something is based on your empathy. When you make arguments like this, you lead me to believe you lack empathy for child sexual abuse, by diminishing it. Even comparing it to murder does not do the act justice, it's often been said it's worse, as it's continued suffering, continued negative outcomes. Diminishing it's weight is not defending victims, even if victims do it sometimes themselves. Here's another quote from Milo just to bring the point home: "It (csa) is not the worst thing that's ever going to happen to you. Going bankrupt is worse.". In your argument, how would you disagree with him, without invalidating victims and telling them how to feel? Would you disagree with him?
