ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Beautiful explanation..only Swamiji is capable of such brilliance.Actually Advaita is the culmination of bhakti and karma marg..and following that makes it easier to understand this level of Vedanta. A diligent n sincere practise of naam japa and being loving and empathetic towards the world makes us receptive to higher insights. We then realise that what we are seeking is within us .The journey may span many lifetimes, it is merely going from yourself to your real self.

I listen to a few excellent Advaita & Hindu philosophy teachers (both Indian/ Non-Indian) on KZfaq. I like them all, and am thankful, but I must say, Swami Sarvapriyananda is the best one that I've seen! He hits the mark inside me every time!

I learn something new in each satsang of Swamiji.Today I learned the difference between awareness of our Ego,mind and The Pure Awareness which is Us.This is really Atma-Anatma Vicharana and coming out of Ignorance. Please comment on this further.

How to make children spiritual? Ans: Why have children in the very first place. What is the need? Why, why, why to make someone go through all the agony of duality and samsara.

Congratulations - having this understanding while living in the world means you are still not entirely trapped in Maya's net ! Else, simply put, it is lust (the primitive urge to reproduce) and Ego ("MY blood ) that makes the world go round and most people cannot even stop to think.

Lovely Answer by Swamiji on my Question at 35:52 . I really wanted to know how I can marry my goals as a researcher with the higher goal of attaining oneness. And he has summed it up perfectly. Disinterested work, Not Uninterested.

Hari Om Swamiji Parnam, It is always nice to hear your views on consciousness. My question is about the cosmic system of OM being a cosmic energy present in the total universe and so in every one of us. This Eternal energy is hidden and if it's symbol appears in the forehead, How will it be explained with reference to consciousness and Brahmn/Param Brahmn ? Thanks with regards.

Swamiji,we know life is a circus where we evolved into our real spiritual nature. From the cycle of birth and death we know every human being has to come back unless he realised his reality, from the beginning of human civilization a few men was there but now the population of earth is increased many times.as the birth rate is high than the death rate.so I can conclude that consciousness is not reserved,as we know the conservation of mass and energy .My question is the total amount of consciousness is conserved ?

Picking up on the point of having seen through the futility of the material world being a good thing as no material thing or wealth will bring God realisation, ultimate happiness, absolute truth, etc. and agreeing with this, I do wonder at times though if a person is being somewhat lazy in not carrying out work which would be more challenging as they have learnt to get by on a lesser reward for easier work (and using the renunciation of attaining worldly wealth as a bit of an excuse) even if they don’t realise it. I guess what i am getting at is, i hope by being satisfied by small financial reward that it is done for the right reason. I wonder how you you can be sure that it is done for the right reason. Thank you Swarmi Sarvapriyananda for your lectures.

101weirdfish Hi, This is something I have questioned myself many times. What I found from the talks was - when we tend to be spiritual, sometimes wordly ambitions may take a back seat. Being content with little is emphasized as one of first and foremost in renunciation. But then the mind needs reason and motivation to do anything. The reason behind the renunciation of world is also to find time and mindset for spiritual activities. Here renouncing only the world would be the issue, it should include our own selves that is likes and dislikes, expectations, benefits etc. With that, all work becomes service to others and ultimately God or higher Self. The goal would be to do the work, whatever it may be, as best as we can, without worrying about the way we want things to turn out. This spiritualizes the work and lightens the mind a great deal to do the work itself with more focus and energy; which in turn prepares the mind for meditation and Realisation.

Thanks for the reply. i find i need/want the time more for spiritual activities than spending time on the career. Thinking of the work as being ultimately for God or higher self is difficult. If the work was actually helping others who are less fortunate i wouldn't find a problem with that. Perhaps i need to think about doing this.

You are welcome! It’s great that you look forward to helping others. I am sorry if I made it sound all too rigorous :-) We are on the same boat when it comes to finding time for spirituality. Practically, I find the mind is much more calm when I do more work but it does drain me out. Visiting a nearby Vedanta center would help I guess as it would provide a serene ambience, one could meet holy people and ask questions regarding spiritual practices like volunteering, meditation etc. Best wishes on your spiritual journey!

When i point backward towards the witness conciousness, i am not able to find anything or nothing. I always find the mind itself. Beyond the mind there is no feeling of I. Is it true that I is the illusion of mind??? Thank you
