ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Consciousness can exist removing all content, but what remains finally as content is consciousness itself. The consciousness as observer is the content and due to self referencing, the observed becomes the observer and issue of content does not arise. The question does not arise when the questioner, question and answer are in superposition onto itself

practice of bhakti is beyond all this as declared by the master Himself Krishna in Bhagavad Gita of which Swami and Prof lean upon. Trust Bhakti which takes more courage than mere intelligent conversation. It challenges one's integrity and courage for a deeper transformation that's alters anyone to compassion simply melting away all ignorance. This is even admitted by Swami Sarvapriyananada Bg. 18.66 Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear. Bg 9.2 This knowledge is the king of education, the most secret of all secrets. It is the purest knowledge, and because it gives direct perception of the self by realization, it is the perfection of religion. It is everlasting, and it is joyfully performed. Bg 5.4 Only the ignorant speak of devotional service [karma-yoga] as being different from the analytical study of the material world [Sāṅkhya]. Those who are actually learned say that he who applies himself well to one of these paths achieves the results of both. Bg 5.7 Compassion: One who works in devotion, who is a pure soul, and who controls his mind and senses is dear to everyone, and everyone is dear to him. Though always working, such a man is never entangled. Bg 4.3 O sinless Arjuna, I have already explained that there are two classes of men who try to realize the self. Some are inclined to understand it by empirical, philosophical speculation, and others by devotional service The whole of Chapter 13 and 15 will also clarify this that knowledge practiced in devotion of spirituality and devotion is king 🙏

As a western "skeptic" (used to call myself "materialist", but my thought on consciousness have made me rethink if that is a accurate word or not) i have always found indian religions to have extremely interesting philosophy. Westerners also have interesting ancient philosophy (greek), but it was never baked into religion in the same way. There are many parallels between indian and greek philosophy, but i find it very interesting that the indians took that philosophy into their religion, which is why it has survived so long. Westerners forgot most of the greek philosophy until it was "rediscovered" in the renaissance.

Sarvapriyananda is brilliant to listen to, I always watch his videos, several times. I had never heard of David, but he was delightful to listen to also, his passion is beautiful. From the way David speaks, I feel he hasn't experienced Oneness, David if you read this, very unlikely I know, but if you do, please work on 'not doing', if you can experience Oneness then because of your position it would make for a revolutionary shift, enabling universities to teach this subject from experience much like engineering etc. Although to those who are being taught, it will still seem like a philosophical idea, but still perhaps your position will give it some weight for a few years.

@@pdigrazi Certainly, the only honest statements can come from ones own direct experience. Even in everyday life, if you go to court, and you are put on the stand and are asked, "did you see a red car", well the answer is either yes or no, and based purely on your direct experience of seeing it or not seeing it. I made no suggestion of David changing to a vedantic belief. You see, when someone has direct experience they don't say belief, they know. There is one peak on the mountain, but many paths, Oneness is at the peak, it is even mentioned in the bible, but I was not into religions, I saw how the various churches behaved and questioned "how can this be religion", I was a staunch atheist until my direct experience, it has nothing to do with vedanta, christianity etc because I know they are just paths to the same peak.

@@pdigrazi Indeed there are as many paths to God as there are Jivas incarnate. However I have noticed that post modern academic philosiphers have not investegated Vedanta enough to "get it", to have it click, perhaps. The fact is that there is a Reality to this field, it's not just speculation and theory as they make it out to be. So, it's everyone's ego choice on their path. I'll walk with the sannyasa's.

Swamiji always mentioned Prof Chalmers, so nice to watch this discussion! Recently I was having a dream where I was viewing a childhood photograph of a person whom I only known as an adult. The photograph in my dream was a black and white and the person I saw was roughly 4/5 year-old in the picture; where he was sitting (in a pose) in the steps of a front porch of a house that appeared like those from the the 70s. Upon waking up I was simply mesmerized by the sheer power of the mind to invent an appearance of reality that is so consistent and well orchestrated. I am intrigued by the fact that consciousness can seamlessly project a world which is hard to distinguish on the basis of conventional notion of reality. One thing that blew me away in the dream was that the person whom I have only known as an adult appeared a 4/5 year-old with all the resemblance to the older individual I know but as a child. That is beyond my normal capability to age slide an individual - more like computer programs do that. I think consciousness is the only reality at play.

I am so stoked before even watching it! It feels like I have waited my whole life for this one. I'm actually going to study Philosophy and Indology from next month on to contribute to this handshake of eastern and western philosophy.

Very interesting discussion, especially after Swamiji has mentioned David Chalmers so often. I would like to see him speaking to Bernardo Kastrup on the same subject! Please 🙏

Yes. Open minded discussions like these would bring us closer to truth, closer to knowing ourselves. Discussions with people like, Bernardo Kastrup, Daniel Dennett, Iain McGilchrist, Anil Seth and the like. Sure, eastern thought has its amazing range of philosophical quest. And a validation of them from a modern perspective will add credence to what has been locked at as just systems of belief.

@@akilanethirajan1883 In east the philosophy is called darshana, meaning seeing/ experiencing. All the six Schools of darshana are only based on logic and experience. There is not an iota of belief involved. If at all you have to believe anything, it's not darshana, it's religion.
