3D scanning was very much a mystery to me, so I attacked this review with much distrust, expecting confusion and poor results. But this Creality CR Scan Lizard scanner has not only educated me, it's made me see the full potential of these devices. ▶ bit.ly/3EADBT6
3D scanning is the process of taking the dimensional data of a real-world object and converting this into a computer accessible design (such as an STL file). It sounds tricky and awkward, and that's what I expected, but this Creality model really surprised me. It's a much simpler process than I imagined and more importantly, it's an easy process for a complete amateur to follow.

You can use baby powder or cord starch sprinkled over your model to make it easier to scan if the color/texture is reflective or otherwise messes with the scan sensor.

If you really need it to be a spray (on really smooth/shiny surface for example) you can use dry shampoo spray that easily come off when finished or scanning spray (duh) which temporarily give a mat finish to the piece to scan and then evaporate.

I use the dry shampoo myself. It is amazingly easy to get off afterwards using a soft brush. I Was a bit afraid to use it on important objects at first, but after some testing I know what to expect.

depending on the scanner some scanners will use the black as higher position or the white as the higher. i tend to use the textures maps as an alpha map as a displacement map in zbrush to boost the details. then bake to the model. remember to flip the alpha map. scans look good. i use a lot of 3d scanners. :) i have a load of them. i also use photogrammetry with some scans to make 3d models. there are many kinds of scanners out there.

You should take a look on the products from AESUB. They have scanning sprays (including transparent) that disapear in 3h after spraying. I worked 3 years with 3d scanners from Artec and the AESUB spray are an absolute must have for 3d scanning. They also have dot points, that helps to allign the different scans better.

That's great! I didn't realize hand scanners were that good yet. I'm surprised the Gameboy scanned so well while the space marine didn't. I wonder if the space marine would benefit from a primer coat or something, maybe the reflective plastic messed with the scan? I used to mess with a program called meshroom that used a bunch of photos that it would stitch together to form a model. The problem there is that the environment came with, so the table, back wall, floor, everything. Lots of cleanup!

3D scanning (for jewellery) is something I've been getting into with the openscan project. Its really interesting you might want to give it a look. Its still not perfect, but its improving all the time. Also, try AESUB 3D scanning spray, its not cheap but I've found it really helps. 3Djake sells it.

Well, that did a way better job than I thought it would. I've tried photogrammetry before with mostly awful to poor results. Many reviews have indicated similar to underwhelming results from items like this scanner. What you demonstrated makes me want to own one of these units (I'll add it to the multipage list of things to buy) There are commercial items available that spray on and wash off - or even evaporate - to combat reflectivity and colour being turned into texture. Great review Sir.

Sweet intro graphics ;) Thanks for another great review! Here is a hot tip though, use OBJ instead of STL. 3D apps like Zbrush, Blender, Maya, etc will all do much better with OBJ format. If you look at what an STL really is, it does almost nothing at retaining information on what triangles are connected. This can be a bit of a problem at times. OBJ is just modern and stable enough to retain that information.

Got one of these on the original Kickstarter campaign. It's pretty good; albeit the software is a bit clunky at times. As mentioned by others - dry shampoo spray helps on some objects, and can be easily washed off. There are "proper" sprays for this application but they're fairly expensive. I've successfully scanned objects down to about 40mm (in height) but admittedly they weren't particularly detailed models.

Pretty impressive, would love to see a comparison to the Revopoint Pop 2 which this competes with, though it's just curiosity on my part as I'm unlikely to ever have a need for one. Side note your Zbrush UI setup hurts my eyes haha but whatever works for you with the small screen there's admittedly a lot to fit in, one of the first things I did back when I started using it was figure out how to get rid of the default gradient background which I think is nasty and use a flat grey instead

Many thanks for this review I’ve been wanting a scanner for a number of years but unfortunately if it can’t scan small objects this looks out of the question still. Especially at that price. That said it does look pretty good.
@cerberus333dog
@cerberus333dog Жыл бұрын
good review. if the price was about 1/2 I would seriously consider it. regarding the size aspect, if you wanted to make your own miniatures for gaming etc., a posable model of action figure could be used to make a scan, and the obj or stl modeled further in your modeling program of choice allowing you to get a good head start on a sculpt. similar for jewelry, making a large detailed model in clay or wax etc. you could get a good start on the final sculpt. Charms of scans of beloved dolls, toys, sport equipment etc. is also a application that would allow for labor saving on sculpting. Finally a trophy using a old gi joe or barbie would allow for a easy start on sculpting. The software looks better than some older ones I have seen, price and size are the biggest issues. I would attempt a large turntable with the markings scaled up to see if a full person scan was doable.

Yeah well good luck expecting any company to sell a product with no profit, we'd all love everything to be 1/2 the price it is! haha. They'll get cheaper over the next couple of years and may hit that price point in 2024 if you keep your eye out

Excellent review, Vogman - thank you! Personally, I am holding off until the technology evolves to reliably scan small objects. In particular, I wish to scan 1/35 scale miniatures and print them out at a smaller scale on a resin printer. Maybe a pipe-dream - but the next decade will tell.

Oh neat, it turns a space marine into a plague marine. Jokes aside, this very much has that 1st generation product feel, not all that useful but has a lot of promise for future development, curious to see how good these could become. I wouldn't be surprised if the next generation combines scanning with photogrammetry to clean up the result, especially on textured or small objects. On a side note, your videos finally convinced me to get my first 3D printer. Saturn 2 is on the way and arriving just in time for me to leave before even having time to unpack it.

There's a solution for scanning minature sized models with decent accuracy. It's OpenScan. It's technically different and out of the scope of this one as it's an automated rotating turntable AND tilting photo head that does under and overshoot the model. It's thus limited to small figures (you won't be able to freehand scan an engine block or a chair) but it's surprisingly accurate. And reasonably priced. The tech gap has been bridged and the only thing industrial pro scanning machines have still is speed. I don't think we'll see much progress until A.I. enters the field to reinvent the finest details the current algorithms are not able to extract from the images.

Regarding making of jewelry, no... it is not possible to make a jewel and scan it. But if it is about making your own then you can sculpt it larger, scan it, and scale it. This will also help cover imperfections in your sculpt.

I was surprised the measurements in ZBrush matched up after being scanned. Not exact but close enough. Since I don't have Z, I wonder how accurate it would import to Blender. I can see a use for this. Hand carve a pendant on a larger scale and scan it. Shrink it in the program, print, and cast.
@vogman
@vogman Жыл бұрын
Yes, working that way round would work well. You wouldn't need to go made with the detail on the big parent piece as when it shrink, details would appear. Clever thinking!
@torstenneuer1560
@torstenneuer1560 Жыл бұрын
If you can carve something that you want to cast, then why carve it in larger scale. Downscaling will - no doubt - always have some impact on the precision. So you carve, scan, downscale, print, then correct issues and then cast. That's 3 steps more than required. Now if you have trouble seeing any details in a delicate carving: Buy yourself an optivisor or maybe even a engraver's or stone setter's microscope. This will still be a lot cheaper (and quicker in the process) than the scanning option (which involves the expensive scanner and a high resolution printer).
@MaheerKibria
@MaheerKibria Жыл бұрын
So the texture mode requires a second camera or a phone since the scanner itself does not have a color camera. Also a dongle to sync the photo with the flashes.

I have tried photogrammetry for fun, not as accurate as this but it's free and you're not computer bound as you can take pictures with whatever device you want and upload them into the software. But accuracy was lacking for me.
