The 5 Whys is a simple root cause analysis designed to get the underlying cause of a problem rather than just treat symptoms. Continuous improvement relies extremely heavily on problem solving to make things better. If those improvement resources are spent dealing with symptoms, they won’t be used effectively, and problems will recur.
This tool is exceptionally useful because of its simplicity and the frequency with which it is used by frontline employees.
