This would be my first look inside a Velocette gearbox, this one had been having kickstart and layshaft issues, with the kickstart going down while the machine was being ridden. a very likely cause is discussed here.

When I saw a Venom for the first time I thought the gearbox were from a lorry. Now, having got two Velos, I'm most pleased with this kind of gearbox, made by skilled craftsmen.

A bit of a change from A65s and Royal Enfields. Nice investigative work. Somebody, somewhere has got those three pins and is wondering where they came from.

Fascinating, I have only seen drawings before, not one in the flesh, or rather video.

Looks to be some traces of brinelling on a couple of those lay shaft gears.

Always frustrating for me, theoretically yes, but the hands have no idea without help.😢

Hi Paul, very interesting to see a Velo gearbox apart. Little different comparing to regular BSA / Triumph unit. What holds a 3 pins in place not letting them move back?

Thanks - all will be explained soon!

Well made? It blooming well better be considering the outrageous prices they charged for the bikes.

Hi Paul. I have a Haynes Velo manual, and a genuine Velo service book (The Red Book) if you'd like me to scan some pages for you. They're a bit of a different breed and can be awkward to set up. I know the sleeve gear nut can cause havoc if it comes loose. Just let me know and I'll get onto to it later tomorrow.

Thanks David, it is back together already, with just the kickstart assembly left to deal with now, though.

@paulhenshaw4514 . OK, no problem. If ever you need it, just ask. Keep the videos coming, love them!

I can see the klckstart return spring with locating tangs on but whats the other spring of similar diameter for? It says 'kickstart engaging spring' on a parts diagram.

I think it pushes the kickstart gear face towards the corresponding gear face on the layshaft gear, when the kickstart is pressed.

All I know about velos is short kickstart/ high comp/ fiddly clutch set up = pig to start Haven't they got a weird outboard front sprocket ?
@paulhenshaw45142 ай бұрын
Yes, they have!

G'day Paul, well it's in the right place for a rebuild, question, has Royal Enfield England ever used a five speed gearbox in any of their motorcycle models? Cheers mate, Neil 🤠.
@paulhenshaw45142 ай бұрын
Hi Neil, the Continental and Continental GT 250 models had 5 speeds, as well as the 250 Super 5. The later Crusaders could also be fitted with the 5 speed box as an option. The GP5 250 2 stroke racer also had 5 speeds.
