An oil producer hard hit by the slump in global prices, Venezuela has seen its economy gradually deteriorate over tghe past decade, with international economic sanctions aggravating the crisis. The late former president Hugo Chavez, in power from 1999 to 2013, wanted to make his country the home of "21st century socialism". But despite this promise to eradicate inequality, the most vulnerable seem in a more precarious situation than ever. However, some economic indicators have recently improved. To take stock of the situation, our team reports from Caracas, a capital where cameras are not always welcome.

Reminds me of my home country, Poland. Back in the early 70s, the communist government was allowed to take huge loans from the western European countries. While in the beginning the borrowed money brought improvements it quickly became apparent that without fundamental changes the rigid, centrally planned and inefficient economy was unable to produce a surplus needed to pay off the western loans. It was a socialist utopia, in a sense that everything looked great on a paper but in reality the economy was so inefficient that it was struggling to deliver even the most basic goods and services. By the end of the 70s and in the early 80s Polish economy was at the brink and it was almost impossible to hide the true state of affairs (despite government's propaganda trying really hard to conjure up an alternative reality). Poland in the early 80s was a really desperate place. Many Poles left the country to look for a better life abroad at that time. It's sad to see that Venezuelans are going through the same now.

As a latin american I believe that you can't compare Poland's situation with Venezuela's... Even though I'm ignorant about Poland's history I'm pretty sure that the worst thing Polish people experienced under communism was poverty...and I wonder if it was extreme poverty as is the case of venezuelans... but anyways, venezuelans don't just experience poverty.... but also violence.. this is a consequence of venezuelans' and other latin americans' way of behaving... In latin america whenever there's poverty you will find some people resorting to violence ... Now I have a hard time imagining polish people behaving like that. I think this can be a consequence of polish people taking their faith way more seriously than many latin americans do... In latin america most people claim to be "catholic" yet most latin american nations have extremely high rates of aborted kids.

Here you see what state-socialism can do to a country. I simply don´t believe that e.g. the US-embargos etc. have very much to do with this downfall. We are talking about a country with some of the biggest known reserves of oil in the world. We are talking about a country that has the basis for growing all crops possible and they probably could be self-sufficient in terms of feeding all their own people in the country. However, we still we see how they - under Chavez - had to import a lot of food etc. - because the government wanted to control all the infrastructure around food production, -distribution etc. and they were too incompetent to do that efficiently. Add to the socilism a massive level of corruption and a crime level that is sky high - and the way to disaster is paved.

A dictator doesn't represent the will of the people, it's an oxymoron to say that you have a socialist dictator. Also a socialist government provides the basic needs of the people, they don't do that here and there is a huge chasm between the rich and the poor, of which 95% fall into the latter category. @@shauncameron8390 make it make sense. I said that it wasn't socialism, and then you accuse me of being a socialist? Haha. When Chavez was in power, the economy and government was more socialist, as the leaders were mostly elected by the people. Chavez took power illegitimately initially but held an election subsequently that can mostly be seen as legitimate. Venezuela was providing for its society when necessary and the chasm between the socioeconomic classes wasn't nearly as large. Poverty had been reduced by extreme metrics. The economy was more than sufficient. Unfortunately they weren't diversified, so when oil plummeted, their dollar plummeted, and the downward spiral just never stopped. That coupled with sanctions by the US, and Venezuela just hasn't been able to right the ship. The government has been going further and further authoritarian since Maduro has taken control, and its ostensibly a dictatorship. You cannot have socialist dictators, that takes the power from the people to be able to decide how the government/economy functions. The people having ownership in these decisions either directly or through representatives is the basis of socialism. Venezuela isn't socialist.

If politicians don't know how an economy or capitalism works then can ruin the economy of a country even if they have good intentions. There needs to be a balance between capitalism and socialism. Allow capitalism but also help people with socialist programs, don't take away so many private businesses like Venezuela.
