Venice should require permits for tourists and limit the number of permits per week.

I was just in Venice a few weeks ago & the €5 admission tickets are only required on weekends & bigger holidays. Also, the cruise ships are no longer allowed to dock in Venice: the mega ships (floating amusement parks) must dock in Trieste or Ravenna, 2 hrs. away, while smaller ships with less than 1000 passengers can dock in Chioggia at the south end of the lagoon which entails a 90 min. trip. It was well worth it to me!

I went to Venice in 2009 for a few weeks to work on a project. Stayed in a non-touristy part and it was in December... nice and quiet. We were told then that so many people were moving out because the restrictions on upkeep on property there were so strict, it made it difficult. I think in the next 30-50 years, the city will crumble into the water... no locals will be left and all the tourist activity will help to erode it. Pity... because out of everywhere I went in Italy, it was the one place that really grew on me. Even with having to wade through a foot and a half of water every morning to get to the cafe. I would love to go back but feel like tourism there has gotten so out of hand that I wouldn't enjoy it.

Cool. What project were you working on in 2009? Was it tourism related?

Short term tourism is okay and does generate a lot of revenue for the city. However, they should never approve permits for foreign nationals to own any properties within the city

They are not looking at the whole picture and the multiple problems. They have already priced out most of the actual residents who have to travel to work in their own city because they can't afford to live there. If they price out families or people who refuse to pay the entrance fee for one day (because fees go up, rarely do they go down) then they turn Venice into a playground for the rich and famous and trust me they would do more damage to the anesthetics because with money comes power. Another option is too shut it down a few weeks or months per year, except for residents or Italian citizens, but that won't work. It's main product is tourism. Another option is if they are keeping track of the people that visit for one day or even multiple days, limit their visits to a certain number per year. The point is they don't have many viable options. Neither side does. They need to find a way of getting the visitors involved. Because the message that is being sent is that we want your money but not you. I've been to Venice. I've read up on what's happening. But other than never going there again in order to preserve it, I don't know what else to do. We need solutions not accusations, blaming or scapegoating.

Not looking to insult anyone or start a flame war, but I went to Venice in 2013, and in my humble opinion, Venice and the surrounding area is sort of a dump, overhyped and overrated.

we ended a cruise there 5 years ago in a small shp. It was crazy, but the side streets were quiet and the buildings are amazing. Venice also has mediocre food catering to the tourists. The food at the train station is the best. We took a high speed train to Florence where the crowds were worse. We had advance reservations for the muesems so no problem there. But the crowds in Florence were jst as bad or worse in the popular places. No more Med trips, all the nice places are packed including the Amalfi coast.

a good idea to limit numbers of people - the streets are very narrow and it’s uncomfortable as you try to avoid bumping into each other

Answer is obvious. Put a cap on how many people can enter the city each month who aren’t locals and charge literally ‘thousands of euros to visit’. That’ll do it. I’m not kidding here.

The fact Venice "needs" tourists is exactly why limitations on tourism are required and overdue. Over tourism hollowed out the city to where it's barely a real living city anymore; it became an archeological site full of tourist trap junk shops and food options. Limitations need to be put in place to try to reverse this and bring locals back to revive the city.

Is it the number of tourists or the behavior of cruise ship’s passengers?
@Demetri450
@Demetri450 7 күн бұрын
It's the number of tourists. It's a beautiful city, but it's streets, if you want to call them that are narrow and hard to navigate even walking. Sometimes you have to walk in a single file or try to move aside so someone can squeeze by you. Now throw even thousands of people and their luggage.

Go to Thailand 🇹🇭 instead, they don't purnish tourists there. They always welcome you. You can take pictures and videos as much as you like. You can wear shorts and flipflops anywhere in the country, except temples and religious places. Thai food is best food in the world, but if you prefer Italian food, there are plenty of Italian food over there. So, go to Thailand and have fun, and you will find it's "the land of the Free".
