Actually, it's theoretically possible to selectively breed venomous snakes to produce less venom to at least not to be lethal to humans so you can still keep this beautiful snakes with fangs. However, we can say it's still a venomous snake since it has venom but the venom is so weak that getting bitten will only make the bite swell for a few minutes. BTW, I personally love the looks of vipers, adders, and rattlesnakes, I love those triangular heads, fangs, keeled scales, and elliptical pupils. I love these snakes so bad, someone should selectively breed now, maybe you could?
@OlympusReptiles
@OlympusReptiles 5 жыл бұрын
Well it may be possible, it would take a ton of generations, and very expensive testing to find the least potent. Repeatedly over time might work, but it would be cost prohibitive. Also, while selectively breeding may lead to weaker venom, I don't know if it would get to not dangerous.

Nice collection. Kind of interesting to see how nervous your rattlers behave since they're kept in a rack system. This is in contrast to my experience of keeping the majority of my venomous in glass terrariums and having them being much more relaxed. Venomous keeping definitely needs to be approached like a religion, with an unwavering set of rules if you want to be successful. My rules are simple; Always have a clear head, never work venomous early in the morning or late at night, and especially never after drinking alcoholic beverages. Keep distractions to a minimum, no cell phones nearby and lock the door to the snake room. I also never show off my snakes (outside of their enclosures) or do live feedings for friends. I have nearly 20 years of venomous keeping, having kept a collection that numbered as many as 50 adults for a period of time, never had an accidents.
@OlympusReptiles
@OlympusReptiles 7 жыл бұрын
FresnoCascabel exactly. My rules are pretty similar. I don't worry about the at night, as I am night person. But certainly not morning and god forbid after drinking. If I have people, they are either experienced, or one at a time learning. Simple rules, and following them are definitely key. Part if the reason for the activity that day I think was due to ambient room temperature. Whole room was warm, meaning warm rattlesnakes, that were pretty quick twitch animals.

I know right? I had three Forrest Cobras in a rack when they were smaller, and they were fuckin psychos, slamming their heads against the tubs striking at anything that passed by 24/7. Then when i moved them to much bigger cages, they then mellowed right the fuck out. Still nowhere near as chill as my big King Cobra or my Gaboon, but those i've had for years and years

I’m pretty new to the snake world in general so I would definitely not be getting into owning/raising venemous snakes or even large snake species for the time being. That being said, I am also a huge animal nerd and love seeing videos that explain what’s going on in more depth. I haven’t seen too many videos in the way of snake vocabulary especially in reference to genetic traits and how that works in snakes. It’d be really interesting to see a video like that in addition to the content you’ve already been posting. Thank you for the great snake videos!
