Greetings from the UK where the weather rarely gets uncomfortable, however last year was damn awful during parts of the summer (40°c plus😩). Just invested in a portable air con and couldn't think how to create a sealed area around the casement window until I happened across this. This is a brilliant idea, thanks so much 👍😊

Thank you so much. We went to a window company and had them cut one for us too and they cut the hole and inserted the collar for the hose. It is the perfect solution. It cost about $79. with tax here in Canada but it was worth it. It fits perfectly inside the screen. So far we just used duct tape to hold it in place but we are going to get the scotch like Velcro and use that so we can easily move it back and forth between the spare bedrooms as needed. The windows are the same size so we figured we can just move the sheet of lexan polycarbonate with the collar between the rooms then just roll the ac unit. Thank you for sharing. UPDATE. I couldn’t use the scotch double sided Velcro we bought because the dimension of the polycarbonate was too exact so there was no room for it. The polycarbonate fits perfectly into the frame of the screen so we just used tape at the corners and middle to secure it. Now the plan is to just move the screen with the polycarbonate taped to it to the other bedroom when we want to move the ac unit.

Thank you, I've been considering a portable air conditioner for my UK home and I also have casement windows (ugh), this seems like a reasonable solution for venting, the other would be cutting a round hole through the double layer of brick wall and installing a vent cover, but that would create a hole for heat to escape in winter season so this is much better!

Purchased: August 2022 - still works GREAT! kzfaq.infoUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn I live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install.This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment.I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

You'd think the companies that make these types of casement windows would also supply an extra screen like this so that we can use a portable air conditioner. Don't they realize that for intense periods of heat, their windows are useless?!?

I agree. All the windows in the my house are push out casement windows and I have been using the HOOMEE Universal Seal but would like to switch to the polycarbonate plastic.
@randalljackson4574
@randalljackson4574 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. They are better windows for winter climates; get more of a "seal" , but yes are inadequate for these AC units. I always think surely it can't exactly be rocket science for them to come up with something ready made so each individual doesn't have to MacGyver something on their own lol Though should say what she does here looks really good 🙂
@elmhurst86
@elmhurst86 4 жыл бұрын
@@randalljackson4574 If these companies can make special screens to keep bugs out then they should be able to make a screen that will accommodate air conditioners. Even if they have to charge extra, we would gladly pay. But, their shortsightedness doesn't allow that to happen. Global Warming is here and the temperatures are climbing. It's the end of June and it's already 39 degrees (102.2 F) here in Montreal. We can deal with the cold but this heat is unbearable. And dangerous!

This is a nice setup! But I'm curious as to why it would require polycarbonate and not just some standard plexiglass? Because in the end it is not to replace a window as it closes properly, it's only to block the air from flowing in.. I'm about to install mine soon 🙌 Thank you and well done!

You should have went long-wise with the hole because you don't have to open the window that much for the exhaust you went with wise for security reasons also if you're on a first floor install inside bars from the inside in case somebody cooks or tries to break in the bars will stop them home Depot the weight of the holes will bring the head of the exhaust down and pop it out you need support for the hose to lift it up to take off the weight of the polycarbonate because of the vibration it will loosen up you must take the weight off the hose

@fixerlady8274

The polycarbonate is not a window screen. It is a clear piece of rigid “plastic” that fits over the window screen. The price will vary by the size of your screen, so I can’t give you an estimated price. Call your local glass company and give them your screen dimensions. They can tell you the price.

And this is what I ended up doing. First time with a circular saw, on polyester, oops sorry, acrylic, augmented by mediocre skill and that's being nice. But it worked. I'd be happy if the high school shop teacher gave me a C. I will not be posting a photo on social media. For fasteners, I used Command Large Picture Hanging strips. For me they were perfect. @fixerlady8274

Because the piece the exhaust air vents through was used as a template, the hose connection fits directly into the polycarbonate. The vent hose connection will fit snugly and not need anything else to secure it to the polycarbonate sheet.
