Here we have the first lens I've ever handled with an apodization filter, specially designed to give exceptionally smooth bokeh. And it's also the first time I've tested an optic on a 24 megapixel APS-C camera - my new Canon EOS M3! So, can this new Venus Optics lens produce images as sharp as they are beautiful?
Find it here (Amazon affiliate link) (Be sure to get the right lens for your camera system):

Thanks to Venus Optics for sending me a review sample for this video - as usual though, this is a totally independent review.

I will be review Canon's mirrorless EOS M lenses in the near future, as well as Fuji lenses.

Wow, that bokeh!!! :O It's sooooo smooooooth it looks like it was achieved in post! Also achieving that with so great sharpness on the subject, making it look almost real, not in a photograph we are used to. Just astonishing.

Spoiler: All the Laowa lenses are strange and really good quality. Like their 60mm macro that manages x2 magnification or the really strange long lens made for sticking into water and shooting into... a pond I guess. Even has a tiny LED to light the little fish or whatever you find down there. Or the 15mm macro that also doubles as a shift lens. Laowa is great!

The performance is damn near on par with Zeiss. I really hate to say this as I've said it before in recent months, but the day of first party lenses is quickly coming to an end. The performance, build quality, and most of all pricing of the third parties are really making it hard to stick to the first parties, in my case, Nikon.

I was thinking of hiring the Milvus to compare to the Venus lens - but money's a bit tight at the moment! I'm sure there will be no difference in picture quality though. The Milvus will focus a lot closer - but the Venus has the APD feature.

It contains 3 low dispersion and 1 extra refractive index lens, optically this lens is superb, its made for video work, its a one of the best in the world, has high tonal range, its great for black and white photography, and has high dimensional sharpness too. Great! Price is not cheap but we must keep in mind - this level of optics and glasses we can see just in very expensive lenses by Zeiss of Voigtlander.

I wanted to post, I have seen lenses with both F and T stops, but they are all hardcore super 35mm lenses meant for things like the C100/C300/RED DSLR movie cameras. Laowa might be using a film template for their STM lenses.

Couldn't the apodization element be replaced by a filter on another lens? Like an ND filter with a radial density differential. That should give any other portait lens similar bokeh?
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 8 жыл бұрын
No, it doesn't quite work like that unfortunately - it's something to do with the placement of the APD filter as an element within the lens's optics.

Hi Chris. You mentioned that there are two separate aperture rings which each control a different number of iris blades. Does that mean that they control separate apertures which can be used at the same time, different blades of the same aperture, or what exactly? I've never heard of this feature.
@DutchUnbox
@DutchUnbox 8 жыл бұрын
The two rings control fully separate individual aperture mechanisms inside of the lens. I guess that when one of the two rings is set to a smaller aperture than the other, then that specific ring is going to be the one making the difference in DoF and light throughput.
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 8 жыл бұрын
That's right. It's a pretty unique feature. Although, I've just taken a look at a review of the old Sony 135mm STF and apparently that has the same feature
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 8 жыл бұрын
the Sony DT has two rings that function the danger way. that was a Minolta innovation. How well does the STF aperture maintain a circular shape across its range?
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 8 жыл бұрын
To be honest, it looks circular whichever aperture ring you use. The iris blades are rounded.
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 8 жыл бұрын
The manual ring controls the aperture at the stops where the STF is most noticeable. The T rating, if this works like the Sony STF, gets closer to the f rating as the lens is stopped down. Having a near-circular or circular manual aperture ring throughout its range helps makes the out of focus area shape more appealing. The bokeh quality is largely influenced by the STF lens and the way that the apodization element causes light drop-off at the end of each circle of confusion, but with an aperture with a noticeable non-circular shape, the STF would still have jarring OOF areas because the circles of confusion would take on the aperture's shape. Again, that assumes this lens works like the Sony STF.

This question came up further down the comments - I'll copy and paste for you, though. "I've been thinking about that question - it's an incredibly close call. Looking at my test charts they seem to be both as sharp as each other. However the Samyang lens shows no CA at all, whereas the Venus lens shows just the tiniest bit of colour fringing. But really the difference is negligible and they're both ridiculously sharp lenses"

You don't say what DSLR you have, but you might find that the focus indicator works even with a manual focus lens. E.g. with my Nikon D40 (which doesn't have live view) and a manual lens I can select a focus point and then watch for a dot in the bottom-left of the viewfinder which tells me that the focus system thinks it's in focus. I will still sometimes bracket as well.

The Minolta 135 stf has better bokeh especially on corners. But Laowa 105 has advantage on IQ and CA control. Both are amazing lenses. But one thing considerable: the Laowa is providing almost every major mount options that every one can enjoy the benefit of Smooth bokeh.

Not much of a big deal for a portrait lens. I bought the Nikon mount version and adapted it to my sony using the Techart AF adapter and it works really well that way when needed.

Well, I didn't get paid or sponsored in any way, and I had to send the lens back. So there's no bias - it's just a great lens. Look at the test charts for yourself :-)

Yizchal Levi please if you get the chance have a look at this lens. I picked up one today and it is a superb lens. My copy has no chromatic aberration - zilch zero! Lens flare is a problem but I am happy to live with that

I wonder how it would stack up against Sony's huuuugely expensive 100mm GM? The Sony has auto-focus, but it costs more than twice as much.
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 6 жыл бұрын
I would probably go for this lens, myself, for the nicer character of its images
@EmoEmu
@EmoEmu 6 жыл бұрын
The Sony 100mm GM is also an STF lens, which is why I think it's interesting how close this lens could get to matching the result. My guess is that most people wouldn't be able to tell the two apart, so the difference would be auto-focus and more than double the price. I suspect I'd also just go for this and focus manually on some portraits.

+Christopher Frost Photography I saw that a minute after posting :) still quite interesting, something to look at if you buy an F/2 lens in the hopes it will be good for situations where F/2.8 doesn't give you enough light :)
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 8 жыл бұрын
That's certainly true - it's a disadvantage in low-light situations. But oddly enough, I found the darker transmittance to be helpful when I was shooting outside on a sunny day. It was like having an ND filter on - it helped me to avoid coming up against the 1/4000 sec minimum shutter speed of my Canon 6d.

shit people who have no experience with cameras or lenses say: that blue ring and the hood looks pro, and who needs auto focus its really easy to use the viewfinder to focus anyway

It was Minolta' idea to make this kind of lens. As I've wrote, it is a copy of Minolta' idea. So nothing amazing in this lens. (Ofcourse it's a good lens but copy.)

The blue ring is reminiscent of the recently departed (though I guess not 100% officially) NX lenses, in particular the S lenses. Kind of makes me wonder if they had some part in that supply chain and decided to go it alone when Samsung dropped the ball.
