Venus Optics are a new, Chinese lens manufacturer who are specializing in manual focus, macro lenses...often with special capabilities. This particular macro lens can focus twice as closely as a normal 1:1 macro lens, without the need for extension tubes. With the overall quality of lenses manufactured in China greatly increasing these days - this could be a really interesting offering.

My Canon 70D had to be sold as I was saving up for my wedding/ honeymoon, so I'm still using my old Canon 60D. It's kind of falling to pieces by now! All pictures and footage shot by me on Canon 6D and 60D cameras.

Super cool lens. Venus Optics may not be the cheapest, but they're doing what I hoped the Chinese would do all along.. offer a unique perspective from a unique culture. Creativity at long last, and a fantastic go, at least. Really nice to see. Thanks for your fantastic review (and so many others). I love these unique lenses in particular.
@heronmyer3780
@heronmyer3780 8 жыл бұрын
+docstowatch Perspective and culture have nothing to do with this. Don't try to make this to be something it is not. What they are doing is making lenses for which there are no immediate competitors in the market i.e. vacant niches. Which is good for them because they don't have to fight established brands like caniksonygma and it's good for consumers because more diverse products on the market.
@heronmyer3780
@heronmyer3780 8 жыл бұрын
docstowatch You are pretty much parroting the western narrative that chinese people are uncreative for whatever reasons. the reason they copy stuff is because it's easier to copy than do your own R&D when you are utilising your low labour cost to compete, it's a result of economics not human biology. creativity is an ill-defined excuse for people to feel special anyway and is mostly overrated. most 'creative' process is just trial and error.
@improver1849
@improver1849 8 жыл бұрын
+Heron Myer I didn't mean to imply that the Chinese culture itself has within it a special 15mm macro or 60mm 1:2 perspective in their collective mind or cultural heritage, heh. Sorry about that. Rather, I'm referring to how contemporary China squashes the creativity of their educated people. Yet they have been a creative culture in times past, and if KZfaq is to be believed, even their modern day uneducated farmers have some very interesting creative solutions to everyday problems. It is a creative act to identify and fulfill an unfilled niche, especially with no engineering precedents. There's obviously nothing for them to copy, especially with the 15mm macro, unless there were historical lenses like this they got a hold of. They weren't just awaiting orders from a creative person in another culture, nor did they merely knock off an optics product from Germany or Japan.
@improver1849
@improver1849 8 жыл бұрын
+Heron Myer Venus, going against the grain of many their contemporaries, had the wherewithal to create something with their own unique perspective in the market. Or at least "a" unique perspective, even if they don't particularly care or aren't personally impassioned regarding this perspective, and are just doing it to be different. For Venus, and in some sense Chinese business at large, this marketing & even engineering creativity, no matter how minor or what the market motivations were, is to be commended and reinforced. The copying culture may have gotten them up to speed, but now that is more than complete, the sooner the copying culture comes to an end, the better. In short: they're making cool stuff, and I'm glad to see it :D

Thanks Chris, I've just bought the newest NIkon version, it comes with a filter, a really lovely pouch, they have removed the ugly printing in front of the lens, also the Nikon version has refined grooves on the focus ring, the build quality is really fantastic, most importantly, my copy is as sharp as from your test and it costs only 200 pounds.

Nice review and when you said China, I had my reservations that the quality wouldn't be that good, but those results are great! I have used Sigma and Tamron macro lenses and love macro photography and your right, getting closer than 1:1 can be interesting. You said there was no chromatic abrasion, but at 4:25 there is a slight greenish fringing on the left side of the white round area on the image, but then again at f/22, it is past the diffraction limit, so its not important.

I think you missed an important issue, I believe that there is no mechanical link to the aperture of the lens so you have to shoot through whatever aperture you choose. Meaning if you choose to shoot stopped down as you normally would in macro, the image would be dark and difficult to focus.
@christopherfrost

That is true! But that's true for most manual lenses, so I don't normally mention it

Hi Christopher, do you have an idea why this lens is perfectly sharp at 2.8 with a full frame camera, but not so on a crop sensor ? I´ve seen this with other lenses too but I don´t really understand why this can be ... as you use both Canon cameras. This was a nice video again, thanks for it.
@TrancemasterOnyx
@TrancemasterOnyx 8 жыл бұрын
It's because of the so-called 'crop factor' that the APS-C sensor, which the Canon 60D, got in this video. So all small imperfections of the lens is magnified (1.6x for Canon if I remember correctly) along with the image, compared to a full-frame camera! I hope that helped solved any confusion regarding this issue :)

Some manual lenses still have electronic communication, allowing focus confirmation, exif information etc. Is this the case with this lens too? It would have been interesting with a comparison with Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro, which was a lens that I loved when I was using APS-C .

The Oshiro lens seems a copy. Oshiro claims Glass made in Japan and assembly in China. From user samples of the Oshiro I would say it is the same lens in virtually every way. Almost the same price even although the oshiro is currently on sale for less than half of the venus optics version. I would worry about quality control and do tests as soon as I got it to facilitate a possible return if I got a bad sample.

If I would to buy a telephoto lens, which is either the 70-300 F4-5.6 IS USM , 70-300 Tamron and 70-200 F4L IS . I want to know which is the most valuable to buy . Budget is not an issue but if the much cheaper lenses are better than the L lens then it would be nice to know . Hope you reply soon and thanks in advance .

Chris, Now that you own a Fuji mirrorles camera you should start reviewing lenses from the Fuji stable. Just my curiosity why did you pick Fuji instead of Sony mirrorless cameras.
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 8 жыл бұрын
+tean tan It was a hard choice. Ultimately I preferred the look of the Fuji jpegs, the style of the cameras themselves (silly I know, but they look so good) and I /far/ preferred Fuji's lenses (from what I've been reading about them) and the philosophy behind them

+Display Name Yes, but in the summer. I'm way way way way too busy these days...I'm going to settle in to enjoying just using the camera and lenses before I review them, and also I'll need to review lenses on the new 24mp sensor, to future-proof my videos
@Jay-mj6xe
@Jay-mj6xe 8 жыл бұрын
Christopher Frost Photography I waited a year and few months, I can wait few more I guess lol. I think Fuji lenses are already future-proof. My 56mm f1.2 is sharper wide-open than my Canon 50mm f1.2L and has way way less CA.
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 8 жыл бұрын
+Display Name I agree. But it's not about the lenses being future-proof - it's about my videos being future proof! If I test everything on a 16mp when in a year's time everyone's using 24mp, then my videos will be outdated

I have what I "think" is a Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2:1 macro lens but, it looks a bit different from the Laowa. It is metal and heavy. My lens has a tilt arrangement at the camera side of the lens. It has no identification on the lens barrel except "60mm F 2.8 MACRO 2:1 @62mm" wonder what I have...

That's really a nice lens, I might set that as the next lens to get. I'm supprised though that it was less sharp at 2.8 on the APS-C, anyone know why? (might be useful knowledge)
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 8 жыл бұрын
+TheDyingFox The sensors on APS-C cameras tend to be made up of much smaller pixels. This is a greater challenge for any lens, as they pick up imperfections and softness more easily
@TheDyingFox
@TheDyingFox 8 жыл бұрын
+Christopher Frost Photography Makes sense, would be intresting if it was possible to see the effects of a micro 4/3 with the same lens (probably even more soft then). Now that I think about it though... if it's more difficult for the lens on smaller sensor, would that make an equally sharp APS-C lens more expensive than a Full Frame lens? If the lens is the same in "Focal Length"/"Aperture"/etc...
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 8 жыл бұрын
+TheDyingFox Every lens is different really and it can be hard to predict if a sharp lens on FF will also be sharp on APS-c - that's why I test so much :-)
@gur262

+TheDyingFox you need less glass to iluminate the smaller sensor properly, so these different aspects might ballance

+Joshua Mack +Christopher Frost Photography Hehe, yeah, so many variables, would have been nice to know how it all works (into details) then be able to build a custom lens specificly for the camera being used ^_^, well there are a few super zooms I would like (that has one lens stuck on it), but they tend to sacrifice other things... I believe, not 100% sure... (Such as the Nikon P900)
