Venus Williams vs Lindsay Davenport 2000 US Open Final Highlights
Corona has hit my parents & I hard, both are in high risk margin so can't make supermarket trips. As much as I hate to ask plz if u can consider making a tiny donation HERE www.paypal.me/JOTennisHL if u enjoy my highlights. For over 10 years I've made HL because I love it. Asking this really feels like begging but we're in desperate times tbh.

Lindsay has got to be the most technically sound ball striker the game has seen. If only she had more foot speed, she’d have so many more slams. That being said, Venus in her prime is fucking gorgeous. Power, aggression, speed, finesse, court sense. Her level is insane.
@JamesFrew1
@JamesFrew1 4 жыл бұрын
Dustin Gabe I’m aware, I remember the matches. Lindsay could have won more if she was mentally tougher for sure-but the biggest mental block she had was knowing she couldn’t get the free points that the Williams sisters could (aside from her 1-2 serve first shot punches) and couldn’t rely on her athletic ability to pull her out of tough matches. They kind of go hand and hand-she could have certainly been mentally tougher, but she would have been mentally tougher if she knew she had something to rely on other than her brilliant shots IF she was in position. All of her opponents knew to make her move, and if she wasn’t hitting brilliantly, Lindsay would immediately get down on herself knowing that her window was smaller than her best, more athletic opponents. Hantuchova, though a much lesser player, had a very similar problem. They were both accused of being mentally weak, but they were weak because they were acutely aware of their limitations.
@peterzhou9267
@peterzhou9267 3 жыл бұрын
@@JamesFrew1 that's debatable. Davenport was a very complete player, for sure, but she had flaws more than just mobility. Her hitting had such little margins (which was surprising considering how consistent she was). Her volleys were solid, but really conventional, and not good enough to block the net consecutively. Her timing got uncontrollably fast over long rallies against, say, Sanchez Vicario and Tauziat, causing her trying to hit faster and faster and eventually lose points. She had some nemises, most of them of the older generation, to struggle with all her career (Sanchez, Maleeva, Tauziat, Sabatini...). These were not the player to make her run.
@JamesFrew1
@JamesFrew1 2 жыл бұрын
@@peterzhou9267 sorry, but you’re way off and it’s not debatable. The players you mentioned like Sabatini did give Lindsay problems, but that was a very different player than the Lindsay here. Those players gave Lindsay problems because they took pace away from her and varied the ball a lot, and Lindsay wasn’t as consistent as she would later be. Sabatini in particular, who is my favorite player, would likely not get a set off of Lindsay in her prime.

@@peterzhou9267 I think your assessment is not accurate, she's a very clean striker and also a good volleyer, only a few women could volley better than her. That being said she was a slow mover so often late to the ball , which caused the errors you mentioned.

Michael Page love and respect Venus , but this was 20years ago; that’s like double of some players careers! Michael Page I said the other girls aren’t scared of Venus, not vice versa. Back in her prime the other players did find her intimidating, but that is no longer the case. I think her best chance will be Wimbledon, she really should have picked her 6th title against Muguruza, but how many more chances will she have ?

STOP assuming what is going on in their heads whether you think they are scared or not like you know them all first hand and they told you to tell me. That would be like me answering the question about how many chances Venus has left. I don't know. And you sure don't but seem to have all the 411 on what's in the mind of the WTA players and what they are feeling and thinking when playing against the great legend Venus Ebony Starr Williams.

When Venus won her first slam title at Wimbledon two months earlier beating of all people Lindsay in the final, she knew she had a good shot beating Lindsay again and winning her first Open. Psychologically, Venus was on an upswing and had the momentum. But Lindsay grew up on hard courts in California and should have won this Open. Maybe deep inside, Lindsay just didn't have the confidence against Venus. Interesting to note Lindsay took out defending champion Serena in the Quarters. Maybe taking both Williams sisters out in the same tournament was too much for Lindsay to handle.

Between Davenport and Venus it was as much mental as it was physical, since they both matched up well against each other, each having complimentary strengths and weaknesses. Serena on the other hand was a much worse matchup for Davenport, since she not only moved better, but knew how to use angles to get Davenport off the court and expose her movement.

The feeling was always bittersweet when one sister saw the other winning a major even if it was against another opponent. The look on Serena's face in the stands is very reminiscent of Venus's face the year before when Serena beat Hingis. It's that "It should be me." facial expression. That's why they were so dominant cause they wanted it so badly & pushed each other.

When Lindsay is "On" she's unbeatable. But her mobility was a liability, just like Sharapova could never quite get there despite being in fantastic shape. You have to realize Lindsay at one point in the mid-1990's weighed close to 200. With the help of a trainer and nutritionist, she got in shape and lost all that weight. But what made the Williams sisters so formidable was their explosive speed. None of the women on the tour could match it. Linds also had a tendency to get down during matches, I've seen her lose matches bc of her down attitude. Nothing you can do about a negative attitude.
@shihlin1

Nobody ever talks about what good sportsmanship Davenport has. I've seen her lose close three setters to the Williams and Hingis, never a sour face or any attitude. Can't say that about most of her peers on the tour during that time.
