D'Vana Tendi... Mistress of the Winter Constellations (like her great-grandmother Astrea Tendi before her); former Prime Assassin for the Orion Syndicate, having been trained since birth. Gave up on Piracy upon enlisting in Starfleet; does not want to look back on her past. Glad her past as a prime assassin was finally explored in the most recent episode, makes the Veritas "Cleaner" more comprehensible!

I'm still amazed how all of them are overqualified for lower decks. Mariner is an Admiral and Captain's daughter being trained for multiple special ops missions, Rutherford was a programing genius who had been involved in a secret project to design autonomous warships, Tendi was the heiress to a criminal empire and trained to be their best assassin, and Boimler... he is heir to a raisin conglomerate and apparently a stud to every woman who isn't a main character for some reason. Weren't these guys supposed to be our view into the background characters?
@Mourtzouphlos2407 ай бұрын
I think that was the original pitch but the characters took on lives of their own. Now they are all The Captain in a Star Trek Series that takes place 15-20 years from now.

I prefer the implication that these ARE the background characters, like redshirt #27 was actually a talshiar plant disguised to look human, the bolian with 3 seconds of screentime running throught a hallways is actually a sector-famous Dabo player, etc.

That's sort of the point, honestly: heck, in Gene Rodenberry's original vision, every member of the Enterprise would have to have sufficient rank and training of an Astronaut in our world, which is why the lowest rank found on the ships are Ensign which is still a commissioned officer rank. The idea here is that to be serving on a ship in Star Fleet, even the basic rank and file all have their own interesting stories, histories, and skillsets. It's also why Star Fleet, despite not being a military, tends to repeatedly kick the ass of everything it comes across. Exploratory vessels designed to be modular, an over-engineered power system that could supply electricity to multiple planets, and a bunch of geniuses on board trained to think on their feet and improvise. If it weren't for the code of ethics Star Fleet holds to- Well, we see that in the Mirror universes and the Romulan Neutral Zone ends up 'The Romulan Graveyard'.

That's the joke: That Starfleet (and in particular its senior officers) is so unexpectedly successful against overwhelming odds because *these* are the *background* *characters* to them. They are the *least* Starfleet has to offer.

D'Vana Tendi, The Cleaner. The Jane Wick of Star Trek. In one episode they accused Mariner to be a black ops assasin. But in fact it was Tendi all the time. Being her so cheered up all the time it makes it more hilarious to discover the truth.

@nolanueno1060 no she's just energetic, I think Rutherford is. Just from him having no emotion. Tendi can feel multiple things and she always tries to get people like her, like the time she messed up that guys transcendence back in season one, an autistic person probably wouldn't have cared that much and just ignored it. But she kept trying and helped him see the koala.

I loved this bit. First of all, Tendi probably misunderstood the initial assignment and thought she was on cleaning duty. Then she misunderstood thinking that she was getting roped into some secret mission, when she was probably supposed to be the extraction the entire time. Then we see small hints of her Orion pirate/syndicate back story

Do you think tendi misunderstood what she was suppose to do and she was always intended to go on this mission. Like her codename was the cleaner and it said to go to the conference room. I mean star fleet intelligence must know tendi’s past since she’s high up in the orion syndicate.

I *think* this was the first time we saw Tendi's fighting skills? I suspect a lot of people considered it a joke or a one-off gag, as opposed to actually seeding serious character depth.
