I’m 61, been riding/racing dirt bikes for 45+ years. 1 ride 5 years ago and I was hooked. Most fun I’ve ever had on a bike. Never did the snowmobiles. Found a clean 98 cr500 for 2k & put an ARO 120 on it. 8k total. Snow much fun!😎

The snow looks really soft and deep but honestly a snowbike doesn’t appear to go as well in deep as I’ve been led to believe. The way some guys talk I was under the impression they were more capable. They look like a real PITA to remount in deep snow. Shifting and dealing with a clutch seems maddening in deep snow, tight woods conditions when you are tired and frustrated.

Wait a minute, I thought snowbiking was all about busting thru the trees etc., that looks like work! My new Ruffian snowbike will be here in Idaho a couple weeks, and as a mountain ski plane flier, I know how much "fun" it can be when you get stuck. The bigger bike track conversions have more power no doubt about that, but since I don't have a bike, or want one, I decided to go with a purpose built snowbike, only 200 pounds so a bit easier to get unstuck, maybe.

@VernonSnowMX
@VernonSnowMX 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Zach. Great question. The bikes can be cranky to start in the AM, especially if not charging the night before (which we remember to do most nights). When the don't have a lot of juice in the battery, we use a Micro-Start to boost them. Once the bikes have a little heat in them, no troubles! If it has been really cold overnight, we have a trailer heater that gets fired up in the early AM before we leave so things warm up a bit. :)

If you were to start with a new build from scratch and not concerned with how much it cost, what would be the best bike and track combination?
@VernonSnowMX
@VernonSnowMX 3 жыл бұрын
There are a bunch of us here in Vernon who are working on "The Ultimate Bike". We all tend to start with an FC450 and a Yeti Track kit. From there, we go in slightly different directions on mods, but we all have the same basic builds. None of us are all that concerned with the costs to get what we want. They end us getting close to $25k CDN (including our many taxes) once done, if all is bought new for the build.

You have found the classic problem. That bike is too small for a snowbike. The best snowbikes are going to be a real handful in the summer. When we used to run one bike for summer and winter we went with an FE 501S which is a big bike, but still pretty ridable on the trails.

Pick lines much?? Seems like the riding is in slow motion but I've heard the snowbikes are slow. what speed are you riding at 20-30 mph?
@VernonSnowMX
@VernonSnowMX 4 жыл бұрын
Dunno much about the speed. Most of the time it is "Fast Enough" for the terrain and visibility. With that said, now that I am more experienced as a rider, I find quite a few times where 50% to 100% more power would be more fun! At first, I felt snowbikes had enough power. Now, when I am carving more aggressively, I could use some more. Climbing power is another slight limitation at times, however, the awesome side-hilling "Easy Fun" tends to make up for that though. It's mostly just a different, yet super fun game. I rarely miss my sled. Notice that I did not say that I "Never Miss It". Cheers!

@VernonSnowMX
@VernonSnowMX 4 жыл бұрын
Building heat in the engine. We want it to be 180 - 220 degrees to be super happy, and offering up full power. The radiators are designed to keep bikes cool in much warmer conditions, and without snow being everywhere1 :P

@@VernonSnowMX Ah, so do you open it back up when you are riding and it has warmed up?
@VernonSnowMX
@VernonSnowMX 4 жыл бұрын
@@arvasnow3962 Sometimes. When the pow is deep and fluffy, sometimes we keep it shut, or 1/2 open. We also have heated bars (a luxury item) but they also play a role in cooling the engine down a bit, and giving us coolant temperature feedback through out hands. I have been riding along thinking "Hey, my hands are on fire right now" only to look down and see I am pushing 250 degrees! All I can preach these days is that temperature management for different conditions is the #1 performance improvement Kung Fu to master! Is this helpful?

Understanding that opinions are like a$$holes and everyone has one, here is my opinion on timbersled/snowbikes. I ride both moto and boondock at a professional level. I personally own sleds and my best buddy has a timbersled setup. Ive been able to put some time on his bike and honestly its as boring as riding a jetski around a flat lake. It takes almost no skill to traverse steep terrain and there is no way you can pull that ski up to loft it over obstacles like in moto. He also now wants to sell the bike and get a sled. However I do believe that for certain people the bike is a good fit as they can get to places where they could not while on a sled. For very tight terrain, like the majority of michigans upper peninsula, the bike can get to spots with minimal effort and not have to be running over sapplings like the sleds. I think bikes are cool, but the sled is much more fun! On a sidenote, if you have a racing circut for snowbike in your state I'd get a kit without hesitation. Laying over in corners with a timersled is an absolute blast!!

@VernonSnowMX 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting note from a 1%-er. Yes, at the 1% professional level I bet sleds are way more lively. They take a lot more skill and they have piles more power, which is fun. Now, for the 99% of us who are not professional-cailibre on sleds, snowbiking is a great way to get out to places that we would likely not otherwise experience. Also, as we each age, snowbiking becomes much more friendly and a great sport that the average person could rip well into their 60s, as we have seen! It's not a lame man's sport, but is a lot more approachable than sledding, albeit not so wallet-friendly. Personally, when I see a guy on a sled riding next to me who is ripping it up, my hat is off to them. Nice work! They are usually 20 years younger than me, and have not hit as many trees as me, but that is a tangential story. I appreciate you sharing your opinion! I have learned that my opinions are always "at a point in time". I have completely flip-flopped on many things in my life that I once stood firmly against. Don't get me started! Happy shredding!

Vernon Snow MX Couldn’t agree with you more about the age! I’m still in my 20s and don’t feel the aches and pains yet. I definitely feel this would be a great suit for me when the day comes that pulling around a 500lb sled is just to much. I would love to be able to get my father on a timber sled/snowbike so we could go out and enjoy the backcountry together again. Just like you said, snowbikes are a great way to get out and explore! Enjoyed watching your content and discussing the topic with you! Keep on ripping it up brotha!

Why did you seem to imply it would be better if the bike ran at 180-200 degrees? Wouldn’t that be bad? I might be old school, just think cooler is better, no?

The bike needs to get up to proper operating temperature to get into the power, and this is the sweet spot. It's like warming up your car before you go out to stomp on it. :)

@@scottchisholm5603 I understand the warm-up, I just didn't think it needed to be that hot. For comparisons, my sled (and most) run at 125-130 degrees most of the time. Go over 150 and it starts to run like shit. I guess maybe because it's 2 stroke?
