Arch is a lot of fun! But it used to be a hassle to install. Thanks to the archinstall script, it's become much less of a hassle!
In this video, I introduce my new channel ThinkPad, a used E490, and I install Arch Linux on it using the archinstall script!

Main developer and creator of this installer here, stumbled across your video just now and wanted to say that 11:32 - made me happy to hear and the excitement at 6:07 also cheered me up. Glad you loved the overall experience, if you haven't tried it yet the user experience *should* feel and look a lot better these days because we dropped an improved version of the TUI just after your video was made :) The current stable version has a few smaller bugs however and I'm about to release the next version in a few days. But the user interface is there to try if you wanna give it a go :) Anyways, keep up the good work!

Arch always makes you learn stuff. Even during its installation. It taught me to read logs, to 'man' every command in terminal, taught me udev, taught me to explore sysfs stuff, taught me to only keep packages that I really need. It was hard in the beginning but you do come to understand your machine far better after all.

I'm confident my time using Arch as my daily distro was extremely helpful as I learned Linux. I don't know that I'd be nearly as good on a server without my time playing with Arch on the desktop. It's absolutely worth the time, IMO, even if you don't use it every day.

I liked that ThinkPad. You can replace the WiFi module, the HDD/SDD, and the memory sticks. Congratulations for the price and the choice! As a device name, you could call this new laptop Amelia, in honor of Amelia Earhart (famous American pilot). As you will be using this device as a test pilot for distros and other works, I think it's a fair name.

Earhart's plane was the Lockheed Model 10 Electra, so perhaps the computer could be called Electra? On the other hand, Earhart disappeared whilst on a mission, so... I'm not sure I want Veronica to end up missing somewhere in the obscure reaches of the Arch Wiki, never to be seen again... ;-)

Picked Arch as my first Linux distro last year because of its barebone-ness, couldn't be happier. I did install it the vanilla way while looking up guides and docs, and while infinitely more labor-intensive, I wouldn't say it's harder. It's been a great experience and I find it hard to justify trying out another distro lol

Thank you for the Info. On the new Installer. Last time I installed Arch 2015 march I believe, it took 3 days and a second screen using my phone. UGH. What a nightmare the phone was. Lol. And that was the plain bare Arch. Just the bare min. with Firefox. Then it was another week almost to get it setup and working properly. But was the most satisfying install I have ever done. I feel I learned something, And I installed packages that my computer needed and nothing else. Most distros pull in tons of things for most computers out there, along with stuff I do not want. Time for a new installation on a new drive. Now see what your video DID!!! Lol. Thanks for your time and hard work on these Vid's.

I thought the main attraction of Arch was the learning process of doing the traditional install. When/if I test it on one of my machines I'll do the fun, slow, step-by-step with the wiki open on the side, like you mentioned. As for naming the machine: Veronica + Arch(ie) leads back to both the old internet programs (using your-neck-of-the-woods gopher protocols) and the even older comic books, so maybe something like Jughead or Betty or Reggie?

I've been using arch as my daily os, and on various things around my house, for years now and I don't think the install process is the main attraction anymore. Nowadays Arch has the best wiki of any distro, and the size and convenience of the AUR is unlike any other tool as well. It's really grown! I remember when it used to break a lot, and could be temperamental, but now i use it on my home server and it's been happily humming along for years :) I will also stick to using the wiki most likely, i think it is fun and i have a lot to configure, but it's really exciting that the distro is open to more people with this script!

I haven't tried the arch install script, looks good though. I always choose grub and ext4 too, just because I always choose those :). Definitely agree with your advice on trying the manual way to learn how everything works. That was one of the best linux educational experiences ever, the first time I did it. That being said, unless you need a very specific and fine tuned install, a script saves so much time and so many brain cells.

Good video showing Arch isn't such a pain. I'm on Pop! OS currently from some of your previous videos. My suggested name for the laptop: Archwizard Gnomeo. Side story: "Gnomeo and Juliet" is an animated clip I stumbled upon and yet seems fitting for the division of Arch linux users and non-users (my past perception is it's for the knowledgeable linux users vs other distros that are more new-to-linux friendly). Gnomeo is a blue gnome (check the arch logo color) and Juliet is a red gnome. The archinstall script you show is the union of the two groups... It's your laptop, do as you please, but I think it's a good gname.

I have been using linux for about 20 years. I swap distros by using a desktop with a hot swap disk bay, I can power off and put in a new hard drive in a minute. 120gb SSDs are very cheap, so I have a stack of them. My Arch distro is Manjaro, I like XFCE and Manjaro was the easy way to get an Arch distro up and running. Think pads are a good choice for used machines and work well with all kinds of software. My old think pad is an X20 that I use for retro programs, it has a dos partition with DOS 5.0 and Win 3.1 I then put XP on it for newer stuff. This works excellent because I have a dock that goes with it so I can use a full size monitor and keyboard.

I name most of my network devices after Adventure Time characters! I try to pick one that is at least a little similar to the hardware too. Like, my Arch server is named treetrunks because it's a pretty old, and I have two raspberry pi's that are named Fionna and Jake. For your thinkpad I think i would choose Gunter or Guntalina, one of the penguins from the show :D I use arch on everything I can, I really enjoy being able to go from one system to another and being comfortable with one main set of tools for it. Although I'm used to installing it the old fashioned way, I am really excited about this script. One of the things I hear from my friends when we talk about arch is that they don't want to to go through the install process, and they already use linux. The long way is just too much of an inconvenience for a lot of people, and while it it's the best for some things, like learning or customization, those aren't the only fantastic aspects of arch these days

Like the video and can appreciate the nuances of all the installers. I'm a Gentoo user, and I live and die by it, but I always like arch and try to install it in a vm once a month to keep my chops fresh. I have used the script and I can appreciate it, it has made my approach to gentoo a lil less canonical, and I start to appreciate the use of scripts, in fact it takes the knowledge in order to make a script. Although I have never used vanilla Arch as a main daily driver, I have installed it countless times, and the installation of arch is much simpler than gentoo. I have a step by step install order for both arch and gentoo if anyone is interested, both in rc-service and systemd for gentoo. I just have to say how much I like gentoo, because when I set it up correctly I can have a full kde desktop go from shutdown to new logged in desktop in under 20 seconds, I don't think there is any other distro that can do that.

As someone who hasn't botched the Arch install process, and thus not many reruns, I still enjoy the wiki way. Plus, I enjoy the granularity of it. I knew the ThinkPad was going to take to Arch pretty well. I installed Linux Mint on my R61, and it works especially great. In fact, most of my IT friends are fond of using ThinkPads for Linux distros.

I vote for the "Peace Arch" for the name. I often name my Raspberry Pis after Sci-Fi characters.

I might have used this archinstall if I'd have known about it, as I didn't want to install arch myself but wanted the arch genetics and ecosystem, so I did Manjaro, which worked out for me as a pretty satisfactory base to start personalising. Maybe archinstall could be even better, but there's no turning back for me now.

garuda is pretty nice, i am also one who wants to stay in the arch ecosystem so i used manjaro for a long time. i've found garuda to be better in pretty much every way tbh. artix is good if you want essentially arch with an installer. was inspired to try the archinstall script i the video just now so who knows, maybe i'll just end up on arch proper.

Recently manually installed it for the first time which was pretty tedious but i was proud to finally get a fully working system and now i see there is an install script lol. I will use that next time for sure.

It's fun that you call "old" a laptop that is newer then my newest laptop I own (and that one is more then enough for my needs) :)

Yeah, this thing really isn't very old at all. It's not the most recent model, but I have customers who are using laptops in production that are much older than this! It's older than a new one, though! :P

When you first try out arch you should use install manually. But it's good to have this option for when you need to get a machine up and running quickly

I suggest you call that thinkpad a thinkshow. And I wanna see how you build/compile a kernel or maybe some other software which a package is not available. As always thanks. Extraordinary content..... Veronica is awesome and so is Linux☺♥

I own a few Lenovo ThinkServers. One my wife has Windows on, I've got Linux Mint on another one that I use to live stream with (had to add a 2GB video card to that to help take the stress off of the integrated graphics card... Not good for streaming). I love them. They run great! The other 2 I haven't decided what to do with them yet. One I think will be a backup to this current system (which is now 12 years old... but still running strong). I've already installed Arch Linux on it. I did it all manually and it works great.

That's great, Veronica. You should to update your tutorial because "archinstall" in Arch Linux is already updated. So, I'm waiting for the next update about Arch Linux or anything about Linux.

I've used the default arch installation method nearly a dozen times now (from having to re-install arch to even doing partial re-installs to fix issues), over the past 10+ years I've been using arch; practically have the steps memorized by now xD. I think future installs will very much use the archinstall script simply for the time-saving.

a video on linux file systems would be great. many users just go with tried and true ext4 but btrfs backups with timeshift are just so wonderful!

Nice video! I've tried the new Arch install and I agree it's a good step forward, but... I'm still not mad about it 😁 Actually I'm using EndeavourOS, which is probably the closest derivative to vanilla Arch, but with a suuuuper easy installer and "yay" already setup along with "pacman" if you need extra software.

Arch: the ultimate newbie-friendly, just werks distro. I've installed Arch (and Gentoo) manually, but I never again :D I used archinstall on my current desktop and laptop, and I consistently recommend Arch+GNOME for any new users, especially considering all of the headaches I have using Ubuntu at work. I want to like KDE, but it's always irreparably Krashed on me any time I try to change themes in the GUI. Oh and I see they added the packagekit integration for the GNOME install, which is nice.
