Enrico Colantoni (Mathesar) invented the way the Thermians speak and move when he auditioned for the movie. Beside winning him the role, it made him the standard that all actors playing Thermians in the movie had to learn from and emulate. He is largely responsible for making the Thermians so funny yet so heartfelt and lovable too.

Famously, Patrick Stewart refused to watch Galaxy Quest but was convinced to go see the movie by Jonathan Frakes after he had seen it and loved it. It would be really easy to assume that with its premise the movie is mean-spirited but it just oozes so much heart. I can't imagine anyone not being won over by Galaxy Quest

Interview quote form Jonathan Frakes. "I was at the CineramaDome in LA, and I saw it on a Saturday morning, or Saturday matinee. As I got out of the movie the first thing I did was call Patrick, who was in Toronto, I think, shooting X-Men. I said, “Dude, I just saw a movie that is about us and captures us like they’ve been reading our mail.” Patrick saw it that night. Then went again on the Sunday. And it was, I mean, some of the stuff in it is so on the nose and so accurate, and perfect, and funny. And Rickman. Rickman with the peeling makeup. Stuff that LeVar’s character does. I mean, it’s a favorite. I don’t know why that sequels never been made. I gather it’s encumbered with a lot of people who need money before they even shot, but this seems rife for a remake."

Tim Allen works when he’s playing off his own persona. He’s a great choice as a “Shatner” stand-in here and they do essentially the same thing in Toy Story.

You have to see some old Star Trek to really get some of the jokes. Lazarus says to Taggart, I see you managed to get your shirt off. That seemed to happen to Captain Kirk all the time. It also reflects real life rivalry between Leonard Nimoy and Shattner- YOU STOLE MY BEST LINES AND CUT ME OUT OF EPISODE 2 ENTIRELY!!!

Alan Rickman's character's obvious distain for his signature line early in the movie is portrayed as a such a soul crushing experience, is the perfect set up for when he finally says it with full purpose and meaning, where it resonates with emotional impact. I watched this movie multiple times, and I still get a little teary eyed at that scene.

When Tony Shaloub was hired to play Fred Kwan, the character hadn't really been developed and he basically had free reign. Sam Rockwell convinced him to play it as a stoner with a constant case of the munchies. And so Fred was born.

Tony Shalhoub's character was originally meant to be stoned (you can see a puff of smoke when he teleports in) hence his apparent indifference to the situation they find themselves in but the shot of him smoking a joint was cut. IMO It's funnier that he just accepts everything at face value and runs with it.

This movie was such a surprise when it came out. Wasnt expecting much, but was blown away when a friend of mine and I went to see it. The whole theater just laughing the entire time. What a gem this film is.

Unfortunately, it was a box office failure. The studio completely screwed the marketing. It was years later on the home video / DVD and TV market when the movie finally became a success and a cult classic.

7 of 9 was added mid series to try to give the show some sex appeal. But she actually ended up making the show much better because the character ended up being very deep and interesting. A credit to Jeri and the writers.

"Moon" is a definite must see Sam Rockwell movie. Directed by David Bowie's son Duncan Jones. I would also suggest "Confessions of a dangerous mind."

If the name of the actress weren't listed in the credits of both movies, you'd never believe that Gwen is the same person as Ripley. It's almost as impressively anti-typecast as Lt. Commander Data also being the crazy scientist in Independence Day.

So glad you liked it, Verowak! This film is one of the best sci-fi comedies of all time! The _Star Trek_ fandom and even some of the original actors have praised it, and a poll of hard-core fans famously rated it as the 7th best Star Trek movie of all time... ahead of six *actual* Trek movies! There are so many fantastic performances, notably Allan Rickman as an accomplished Shakespearean actor dragged into playing a science fiction character... Patrick Stewart, anyone? 😉 But my personal favorite is Sigourney Weaver, Ellen Ripley herself, one of the most badass characters in the history of science fiction, playing a role that couldn't be more her opposite! 🤣

As others have mentioned, this was a love letter to Star Trek, and dedicated convention fans. The idea that this is one of the greatest Star Trek films ever made is shared by fans, and even some of those who have been a part of the ST franchise, be it in front of or behind the camera. Not only is this movie perfect, and it gets more perfect every time you watch it. Early in the film the Thermions say they are from the Klaatu nebula. Klaatu is the name of the alien who visits Earth in the original film The Day the Earth Stood Still.

It was cut for final release but Fred Kwan's character Tech Sergeant Chen was supposed to have been high throughout... hence the groove and constant snacking through the movie

The running joke with Fred (Tony Shalhoub's character) is that he's high throughout the whole thing, but for ratings purposes they had to cut the scenes of him actually getting high.

As you love Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver there is another movie they made together - "Snowcake" - practically the two of them carry the whole movie. Again they are playing characters that are completely different to what they are usually known for and again its a movie that is criminally underrated (in my opinion). "Snowcake" is a fantastic gentle, deeply emotional while still surprisingly funny movie. The main role was written for Alan Rickman and it was him who suggested Sigourney for the her role and even brought her on board, which shows how good he was in his craft as I would never ever could imagine her in such an role but she was fantastic. I don't think anyone had made a reaction to this movie, but even if you don't consider it for a reaction I could only recommend it to watch at least for yourself. Galaxy Quest is a underrated gem and so is Snowcake. Sadly we lost Alan Rickman way too soon , he was an hell of an actor in anything he did.

Alan Rickman was in the movie Dogma (if you can find a copy of it) along with Ben Afleck, Matt Damon, Chris Rock, Selma Hayek, Jason Lee, George Carlin and of course Kevin Smith who wrote and directed it.

Allen's character was such a perfect critique of William Shatner, after he mocked his fans so mercilessly. I'm sure someone else mentioned it, but just in case... Shaloub's character was supposed to be high the whole time, but the scene showing that got cut. ♥

"Back after 18 years..." Nice reference since 18 years was the gap between the end of Star Trek:TOS and Star Trek:Next Generation. Impressed that you got many of the subtle references, eg. Guy being the one NOT getting killed whilst playing the "red shirt".

I think you'd love 'The Way, Way Back' Sam Rockwell's performance is so beautiful in it and it's a film that gets slept on by a lot of people. 'Stranger than Fiction' is another one that has some spectacular performances that doesn't get enough attention.

Alan Rickman is also in the View Askewniverse (specifically Dogma), Quigley Down Under, Bob Roberts, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (not nearly as good as the BBC series, but a great cast [including Sam Rockwell])...for more Sam Rockwell see Jojo Rabbit, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Moon, Matchstick Men, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, the MCU (Iron Man 2 and All Hail the King specifically)...for more Sigourney Weaver see the Alien movies (I'd stop after the first two), Cabin in the Woods, Gorillas in the Mist, Death and the Maiden, Avatar, Wall-E, Finding Dory, Working Girl, the Ghostbusters movies (continue past the first two at your own risk), Be Kind Rewind, Dave, the MCU again (specifically Defenders this time)...

Mathesar kinda reminded me of a cross between Andy Kauffman and Robin Williams. This is one of my favorite films of all time. It is one of the few that I go back to a few times per year. I am glad that "The Twist" with the convention attendees caught you by surprise. Original viewers didn't really have that luxury - at least not as much. The trailers pretty much spelled out what the movie was going to be about, so we were expecting the twist. We just didn't know when it would happen. An interesting thing about the intro, is that when it was shown in theaters, the curtains are drawn partially closed, to match the opening aspect ratio. When the opening clip ends, then the curtains were drawn open, as we are introduced to the convention setting. It kinda provides a nice & dramatic opening to the movie. I think it was a nice touch. Not only would it have looked strange, if the movie opened with black bars on the ends, it makes it less obvious that something is different, until the actual movie starts, and you realize that you've been watching the movie in a different aspect ratio. The movie was presented as a comedy, but I also think it has some weighty moments to it as well. Even though there are laughs to be had, I think it also makes a good light-hearted sci-fi drama. It stands with the best sci-fi offerings that don't have "Star" in their name.

7 of 9 was introduced like this, true - and sadly Jeri Ryan had a really hard time on set. But thanks to her acting and some quality writing, the character became so much more than that. Actually, one might complain that at some point, Voyager pretty much became mostly "The Doctor and Seven Show", in that they devoted so much time to these characters (which, admittedly had the most interesting premises) that the development of other characters suffered. Still - great character, great actress.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is another film with Alan Rickman, fun film and good book too. Paul has Sigourney Weaver. Jojo Rabbit has Sam Rockwell. The Santa Clause stars Tim Alan if you want a good holiday film.

Tim Allen has been in a few other movies, including The Santa Clause trilogy, Toy Story, and Big Trouble (2002). That last wasn't liked by critics, but I enjoyed it. The movie isn't a love letter to Star Trek the show, but rather a love letter to fandom. And they really do have "walk through" simulations of various Enterprises. One bit you seemed to have missed; while being directed by Brandon, they have to crawl through some ducts. At this point Weaver mutters "ducts; _why_ is it always ducts?" Fun Fact: in the movie, the new Galaxy Quest premiered 18 years after the end of the first series. By coincidence (or not) 18 years is also the time between the end of the original Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation. P.S. Star Trek has always been massively sexist when it came to women's wardrobe, thanks for Roddenberry. The original series had the miniskirt uniforms, not to mention the "barely there" designs by Bill Thiess for many guest stars. Even The Next Generation featured the short skirt uniforms for a time. Star Trek: Voyager with Seven of Nine was the low point; Google images of Seven of Nine and you'll see what I mean. They poured her into cat suits that left nothing to the imagination. The story goes that Patrick Stewart especially refused to watch the movie until several fellow cast members urged him to give it a try. He loved it.

Fred the mechanic guy was actually supposed to be stoned throughout the whole movie, which is why he acts the way he does and is always eating, but they cut those scenes showing and explaining that to make the PG13 rating.

Enrico Colantoni(Mathezar) aced his role in this. He was also good as a regular in "Veronica Mars" and as a guest star on "Person of Interest," in distinctively different roles.

Other excellent work by Sam Rockwell is in JoJo Rabbit (2019) where plays a side character, but a great role in a great film, and Moon (2009), where he is most definitely the lead.

Upvote both recommendations. JoJo Rabbit is an amazing unique must-watch film, full of stellar performances, and is very popular with KZfaq reactors. Moon is a really solid film as well, though not as well known, and not often reacted to. I expect you'd garner a lot more views with JoJo

Tony Shalhoub was playing Fred Kwan (Tech Sergeant Chen) as a stoner. He has the munchies throughout, and he takes (almost) everything in stride. This also explains his "group hug" management style in engineering. Also, note that Fred is a caucasian portraying an Asian. This was a choice he made long ago when he selected "Fred Kwan" as his stage name. Every once in a while you'll see him squint, in an unsuccessful attempt to depict epicanthic folds. This is the kind of thing that actually happens in Hollywood - think of David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine in _"Kung Fu."_

you missed out Tony Shalhoub as Fred, had a part in Men in Black as the pawnbroker who has his head shot off multiple times and of course same in MIB2, but probably best known for the series 'Monk' - one of my favourite /police/detective shows

No one seems to notice that when the Commander asks the ship about the beryllium sphere it doesn't respond but when she asks the ship it responds showing that her role is important in some way.

The reason Alexander never takes off the headpiece is because the makeup and prosthetics can take several hours. It’s just not worth it to take it off if you have a gig the next day.

I went to a gaming convention and there was a group that had a full size Enterprise bridge model with working controls, screens and uniforms and they would roleplay Star Trek!! The Questians have nothing on Trekkies! But they are a love-letter to them in this movie, for sure. So it's not that far fetched that the Commander thinks he's going to a role-playing set instead of a real ship.

I love Sam Rockwell's character in this one. Especially that he keeps pointing out the dangers, then ends up becoming the security chief! Matchstick Men is a great Sam Rockwell movie, if you're interested. It also has Nicolas Cage, in a very underrated performance.
