I'm seeing a lot of comments suggesting trackball or roller mice as well! I've never tried either so I'll keep that in mind as a potential future experiment.

as bout to comment. was beat to it V_V Honestly dont even have pain. funny enough started when I volunteered at a computer lab. And as a part of some class they had for a short bit we were offered free computer and perifferals if we wanted. granted I didnt need an.. old xp machine thats gunna go collect dust. but in the boxes of mice I saw an old wired mouse with a big red ball out the side of it made by microsoft. asked about it and dear god the confused look and realisation on the owners face... Once they explained it to me it was.. love at first sight,.. how cold I not take an obscure and weird thing I just found! Honestly... I tried it... took a good bit to adjust but I fell in love with trackball mice.... Sadly lost the ol microsoft one... it was so big n chonky..... but Now I got one with bluetooth and capable of connectin between devices.... you can even get the best of both worlts and get a tilted trackball mouse. not quite fully vertivcal but I think some can go 35 45 degrees I think for a more natural hand postition. Between being more comfortable its actually quite good for being space conscious. kinda. Since you dont need to move it you can let it sit in one spot and yuse your thumb to make movements it only takes up the space it occupies you dont need a mat and dedicated space to let it roam. and hell sometimes Ill just take it off the desk sit it on my lap and roll the ball. Im no trackball expert but I think a decent starter just to try is the Nulea M501. Main reason being price at the price point of the 20 - 30 this trooper has been goin. litta main brand shi easily goin for 50+ even dippin into 80 90$ ranges or so. in the case of logitechs lineup having a weak left click thatll within a year if your lucky will break and either not click at all anymore or get stuck constantly thier replacement for that model being worsae no longer selling the old and even thier premium 100$ option... having the same clicker issues... Have had this 20$ mouse last longer than any of my logitechs.

I was actually just having this discussion with a friend who's a programmer for a living, and at his office they had his entire team using Trackball's for their work--'apparently' recent studies have shown they they aren't good for your hands? I haven't done my own research on it though so, don't have an article I can link to confirm this. Verticle mice are very good for general every day computer use though if you have hand pains, that is for sure!

I used a vertical mouse for a while. It does take a while to get used to it, but the precision thing is true: every time you click, the mouse will move just a little bit to the side.

You're holding it too hard and pressing too much. Loosen your grip and trust it will click.
@unknownhours

@@RyanShiels Maybe I just used cheap mice, but that motion is hard to eliminate due to the design of the mouse. I used a vertical mouse for years, so I am not inexperienced. And I'm talking about it moving like 1 or 2 pixels. It's a very small movement. However, if I am playing XCOM just spent the last two minutes pixel hunting for the _just_ the right spot to throw a grenade, I'm going to notice.
@RyanShiels

@@unknownhours I use literally the cheapest vertical mouse on amazon! I have a very loose fingertip grip and have no problems with the mouse moving when I click. So I can assure you that it's your grip. Rather than clicking with your finger, you're probably squeezing your hand, causing it to move. As you press too strongly and the mouse moves and rotates left (counter clockwise) as you tighten.

A good mouse won't do that. Though there is a real precision problem because the position naturally limits your wrist and fingers range of movement

I have never had pain in my wrist in my life, but once I had to use one vertical mouse at someone else's workplace and I liked it so much that I bought myself the same one and still use it only for 4 months. I've also never seriously drawn anything, but in games the mouse is no worse and I got used to it in just a couple of days.

As a full time video game artist I use a vertical mouse non stop and whenever I go back to a normal mouse I can feel the difference in strain. It feels weird at first but you can get very precise very quickly. It’s like switching from using trackpads on laptops to a dot input. It’s weird and clunky at first but it is far better overall

As a physiotherapist I recommend vertical mouse to everyone working long hours with computer. It can prevent wrist pains and carpal tunnel syndrome. It's a condition that causes pain and numbness in hand and fingers, you loose control and sensation and might often drop held items. In some cases you'll need surgery. So go get one now (the mouse, not the condition).

@@System_Spark I'm fortunate enough to have had my arthritis examined by an orthopedic doctor, so I know some appropriate joint strength exercises. When I get a flare-up I also use (a generic version lmao of) an arthritis cream called Voltaren. I've never tried a trackball mouse, which might work well. I've also stopped using mouse and keyboard in lieu of motion controls when playing games... the things we do for our art... I hope you find relief for your own wrist pain!

As a music producer that was sentenced to Apple Magic mouse for years (help me), I can say that a vert is truly the best thing that's happened to me. I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome in my right wrist, and after I said what mouse I was using, the doctor left the room and brought in an Anker vert mouse to show me. I bought one of my own the very next day. I don't play any competitive fps games and my main in Risk of Rain 2 is huntress, so I don't really need any precision aiming. After my switch back to windows, I got a mouse with the computer and couldn't help switching back to my vert. It truly is something that greatly enhanced my productivity the same way a mechanical keyboard did.

If your mouse is shifting when you click like i've seen a few others say, might just need to lower the DPI when doing precision tasks. You only need the speed to aim, and the button is very accessible for a quick swap between

I personally used Logitech MX Ergo for years and even as a first time using it, to me it felt like second nature, the motion you did to move the trackball is similar to the thumb stick so it requires little to no training, and one bonus is that you can make the ball coast to quickly dash across the screen.

I used to work in an office and tried several ergonomic mice. Bizarrely the pain in my wrist and fingers shifted to hurt in a different way to accomodate with the new mice 🙄 i did many things to try and help this, ice packs, compression gloves, even different chaird that allowed my wrist to rest on the desk. The one thing that i have noticed works is the most obvious thing. Water. Drink a jack ton of it. As far as I can tell, when i'm hydrated it allows for my joints to relax. Also stretches. Look up hand stretches and be diligent about doing them when you have an off moment (e.g. waiting at a red light). Hope this helps 😁

I can tell when a repetitive strain injury is coming on fairly early, and take steps to avoid them before they happen. I switched to a Logitech vertical mouse a while back after taking on a project that involved hours of computer use daily. It took a little while to get used to it but after 2-3 days I was as proficient as I was before. I could never go back to a standard mouse. The only accuracy issues I noticed went away after a few days. My one major complaint is that the bone on the right side of the heel of my hand drags on my desk. The Logitech mouse has this issue less than the smaller Anker one I tried once. A mouse wrist rest solves this issue by elevating the heel of my hand off of the surface.

I've never used a vertical mouse, but one thing I've noticed over the years is that a lot of my wrist discomfort/pain went away after switching to a much lower DPI. Using my arm for most of the movements seems to have helped significantly, and seeing that tiny mouse pad in the video seems wild to me in comparison. I need to swing my mouse about 8 inches to go from one side of my 1440p monitor to the other side of my 4k monitor with my 800DPI.

My dad actually has a very old variation of the vertical mouse that uses a thumb trackball instead of requiring you to move the mouse around. It was recommended to him when he was diagnosed with his carpal tunnel issues (that I unfortunately inherited) but having tried it myself, it's actually very helpful when you get used to it and I wish I had one of my own.

I've been using a vertical mouse (along with a split keyboard) for just over three years now! It's seriously helped with my dual carpal tunnel (although I've found lifting weights/bodyweight exercises to be even more beneficial in managing the symptoms). For its effectiveness in precision gaming, there is some difficulty since most of the movement comes from my shoulder now but the example I always cite is being able to clear acts one and two of Ultrakill on standard difficulty.

0:16 I would personally argue that if you know that you'll be using a computer mouse at lot in the future (as a career or hobby), you should still invest in a vertical mouse as a prevention, even if you don't have wrist pain. Using a standard mouse means your ulna and radius (the bones in your forearm) will be crossed for a long time, which along with repetitive wrist movement can cause wrist joint strain, or even tendonitis. Better be safe than sorry since the pain can last for a very long time if not permanently, and you can get used to the vertical mouse very quickly. I've been using one for some years along with a forearm splint, definitely a life saver at work.

I use the same one! After using a vertical mouse for several years, I'd hate to go back to a regular mouse. My only gripe is that the wheels on Ankers have been awfully flimsy for me. The first vertical I had was battery-operated, and I switched to wired to avoid battery expenses as well. But the wheels on both of them broke within a few months of use, and make scrolling nearly impossible. That said, it has helped a lot with avoiding carpal tunnel, and feels much more natural.

Absolutely right. I am also using a vertical mouse for many years now and have tried several ones - my all time favorite gotta be the Microsoft Sculpt. This thing doesn't only feel gorgeous, but it is also very precise and perfect to use. I like this one so much, that I got 3 of it. 2 for 2 computers, and a 3rd one was simply bought in advance, since they don't last forever. But you can open them up for possible repairs - you definately need to open them up every now and then because dirt collects in there. And since the scroll wheel works with optical sensors, this dirt blocks the sensors and you can't scroll properly anymore. But once cleaned, it's like new again.

My old mouse died about two months ago and I ended up deciding to try out a vertical mouse (Logitech Lift). I am /very/ happy with the decision. I was pretty skeptical when I first learned about them, but my wrist pain has been much improved and the *only* downside I've noticed is that its taller profile means its easier to accidentally knock around if I'm not careful when reaching for things around my desk. The learning curve was almost nothing (way easier than a trackball), I haven't noticed a significant accuracy hit (this mouse has a bit more friction on my mousepad which can make doing tiny motions difficult but that's not a "vertical mouse" problem), and it feels so nice in my hand -- very natural. Would highly recommend.

I've had a vertical for a long, long time! No issues with precision once you get used to it. Sadly I switched back to a regular mouse once the vertical one broke - that specific mouse was the only one I found comfortable, and it wasn't for sale anymore.

I've been using a vertical mouse for about a year or two now, and it's been pretty helpful! I had originally wanted to get a trackball mouse, but this option was cheaper, and i haven't regretted it yet! it's a little awkward to use with a supporting mousepad, though. overall, definitely a good choice as far as I'm concerned!

Not a vertical mouse, but a friend in high school put me on a trackball mouse. Used your thumb to move a ball to move a mouse. Kinda fun. I broke it though so I need a new one soon.

For the love of everything, if you work a desk job, MAKE THE SWITCH. Never had an RMI in my hand/wrist/forearm since. Logitech makes some nice ones. I'm still sticking to traditional ones for gaming though lmao.

my cousin started using a vertical mouse because her wrist was messed up. she forgot it at my home once, i used it for a couple days until i could give it back, and i _immediately_ bought one. i have never regretted it.

PREACH! spread the good word haha. I've used two wireless vertical mice. Both from Kensington. The first was a normal one and like you said. There was a bit of a learning curve but after that i almost never went back to regular mice except for some games. The second one I scooped up was the wireless Kensington Trackball Vertical Mouse. And oh boy did i wish i got it sooner than later. Mainly because for school/uni/small desk space applications it's a godsend. You just park your hand wherever and boom! All the advantages of a mouse with worrying about wrist pain or having to pick up your mouse over and over after you reach the end of your available mouse space. Once again, finding the right trackball sensitivity and learning to get used to it took time. But afterwards using it was buttery smooth. Did a fair share of 3D modeling with my trackball mouse. I know Logitech makes both vertical and vertical trackball mice and i did try their trackball variant when i wanted to get one. But i found it was too small for my hands so I went back with Kensington. Anyways, moral of the story is: if you can afford to get one and you're curious? Definitely try it out!!!

I brought my Logitech MX vertical after i had to get my arm on a cast over tendonitis. Took only 2 days for me to feel like i've been using it my entire life. probably bc it has a very gentle tilt that gives it a more familiar position. Suffer for the left handers out there who might have a hard time finding a new model. But imma be honest too that with this purchase, i p much gave up on FPS or other mouse click intensive gaming if only because it was an expensive buy and i dont wanna squander the the thing by stressing it with agressive slamming or sink the buttons because i was frantically trying to hit a Tracer in Overwatch. If anything the biggest aggressor on regular mouses was the middle click/rotation to scroll activating my tendonitis, but most vertical mouses have configurable thumb buttons you can use for that instead or just allow you to use index and middle. I can confidently look back and say that i never had any flare ups or tenderness on my forearms again. If i mess it up, its gonna be because of videogames or playing guitar, but never again because of art or video editing, etc.

I went to the doctor's office yesterday and my doctor was using one of these on his laptop. I was confused at first and looked at it like it was odd and crazy. I thought I've seen everything computer-related since the 1980's and I've never seen a vertical mouse before yesterday. Well I went searching on youtube and yours is one of the first few videos about it and I'm surprised this is a thing and.. how did I not know about this? o.o

i didn't have wrist pain but elbow pain that was pretty much solved by getting a vertical mouse. I have the logitech lift which i like cause it's weightier. the strain of the radius crossing over the ulna is greatly reduced by a vertical mouse while i'm editing, and fine motor skills easily came back after a week or two.

I enjoy my vertical mouse. I'm doing 3D this semester at my animation school, where they use traditional mice and my wrist has begun doing a clicky thing after 4 months of use. Clicky wrists are normal for me and doesn't hurt, but the vertical mouse I have at home helps a lot minimizing it. So I can attest to the difference. (I should bring my mouse with me, but haven't for dumb lazy reasons)

I have fibromyalgia - and was put onto vertical mice(?) by a random stranger in my local electronics shop (Currys for those in the UK) who saw me trying mouse after mouse to find one comfortable. They did not have one to test but went home to a certain river named online store. My first was a cheapy that used AAA batteries and lasted about a year, my second was a better quality rechargeable and I have forgotten how long I have had it. If you have any sort of problem with "normal" mice then definitely give the vertical one a try - if they work for you then they work really well. Will not be going back to an ordinary mouse.

I used to work in a medical office doing patient registration. One day, our office had to close down for lunch time due to an inspection and break down of the water pipes in the building. My supervisor at that time asked me if I wanted to go to another office just a couple miles down the road. I was hesitant to go, since it was optional, and I already had enough hours for that current check cycle; however, seeing it as a good opportunity to meet new people, I accepted. I was assigned to register the following Monday's patients--a task I completed within just about 15 minutes or so. However, afterwards, I volunteered to help catch up on their medical records pile. OH BOY. That mouse... it sure was something else. Not only were the screens reversed (scrolling to the right screen of the right screen looped to the left side of the left screen), but it also had a fancy keyboard that had one of those "ridges" in between to make your keystrokes feel more natural and less distanced when typing, a mouse pad with a wrist supporter on the bottom, AND a vertical mouse. I was SO disoriented the entire time because of all the wonderful little accessibility features I took for granted. I was moving at a really slow pace. But let me just say, the vertical mouse is an invention like none other. After maybe 30 minutes of fumbling around, I became quick to notice that neither of my hands cramped up. Which is a feat on its own, considering how much clicking and scanning and blah blah blah I was doing that afternoon. To anyone out there who thinks it doesn't help or is stupid: you are so wrong, and please give it a try. I have recently made a switch to one at home myself, and it has improved my wrist pain significantly. tl;dr- vertical mouse good. computer accessories with "fancy" features are there for a reason and are beautiful inventions from the heavens

Having a Vertical Mouse has saved my wrist. For the longest of time I was using a regular mouse. After a certain age, I was starting to feel discomfort on my wrist and tried to power through it. I kept at it over and over for a while. I thought to myself that I'll just take small rest breaks here and there whenever I started to feel pressure. Thought that maybe it'll go away on its own. Weeks has passed and it was becoming more noticeable. Even when I wasnt on the computer and just doing daily chores and activities. As much as I didnt like it, I thought of switching to a vertical mouse. I heard that a regular mouse could be the cause of the wrist pain. So I bought one for cheap. And after a month of hating the feel and the movement of a standing mouse, I adapted to it. Now, it feels normal to me. And no more wrist strains or pain.
