Hi! Welcome to our KZfaq channel! I hope this video is helpful to someone out there. Maddison began showing signs at 7.5 months old when she started to crawl. She became obsessed with toothbrushes at 9 months old. Looking back we now know that the actions in these videos are indeed related to her autism as she still does all of these at 2.

these are all normal things babies do...sadly we look for signs but dont realise that half of them are normal things the autism is the difference, there are babies who will do this and not have any autism at all...just noting this for worried parents. love them and appreciate each day, don't push labels on them until you need to for whatever reason..(school, support etc)

💯 disagree. If someone’s child has signs of ASD they should seek an evaluation for their child. Early intervention is key. Waiting to “put a label on your child” does more harm than knowing your child is autistic and getting them the proper support.

All my babies did everything this baby did and they are fine. One kid about to be a senior in HS, another going to 8th grade and we had a surprise baby who is 10mos and she’s doing alllllll that and perfect.

People really do think "Oh no that kid is sitting in a "W" they must be autistic!" Is a total overreaction. I did a lot of those "signs" and I'm not autistic. The way the medical field is today you pick your own disease based on your doctor choice.

I am a nurse and work in the psychological diagnostic community. ASD is our specialty. While I think it’s important to be aware of things that may not seem quite ‘right’ I do believe it is equally important that ASD often does not get a really solid Dx until school age. There is also a great cross over between ASD markers and ADHD markers. Until a child begins to develop a bit of verbal communication,we are generally reluctant to assess with a firm Dx until kindergarten. ASD is a spectrum and can be fluid with changes in presentation based upon developmental stages. Love them how they are…. You will know as a parent when the timing is right for an assessment.

Watching this video reminded me of my grandson ❤️ Same eccentricities, obsessively opening and closing cupboards. Obsessed with everything that was circular. We worried a bit for his future, but didn’t stop loving him for who he was. So sweet so special 💕 He’s a grown man now. Working full time. Uses public transit on his own. Has his own apartment (gets help with groceries twice a week) Is now obsessed with photography ❤️He is such an amazing man. We’re so proud for what he’s accomplishing in his life. Thanks for sharing this. My daughter would have truly appreciated seeing this 28 years ago. Good work 💫 He’s just “awesome “❤️❤️❤️

Every child goes through phases doing each of these behaviours. It's exploratory, playful behaviour. It all helps develop balance and coordination. I don't understand labeling these behaviours as problematic. Take the child out the house and let her play and diversify her experiences.
@HkFinn83
@HkFinn83 10 ай бұрын
They’re not labelled problematic, they’re signs to be aware of. If a baby shows these behaviors it’s not necessarily indicative of autism, but when or if they become very obviously habitual, they can indicate possible autism spectrum.

My son is now 28 years old and he was diagnosed with ASD right around his 4th birthday. He seemed to be progressing on schedule until he was around 21 months old. He seemed to be more of a handful than any other babies I’d ever been around, having been the babysitter for roughly half of our neighborhood when I was a teenager. One day while my aunt, uncle, and cousin were visiting, my son was on the bed and my aunt, my cousin, and I were playing with him. My aunt tried to pick him up and I saw a look on his face that I’d never seen before. It was as if he was starring right through her, and he started to wiggle around as if he was absolutely determined NOT to let her pick him up. He didn’t make a single noise. My aunt thought he was just playing and said, “you’re a wirery little guy, aren’t you?” I just stood there speechless. I knew this was not usual behavior for him. It was about that time that his language skills stopped progressing, and if anyone talked to him, he would close his eyes as a way of avoiding eye contact. If he wanted me to look at something, he would grab my face and turn my head in the direction he wanted me to look. He would line up several of his little toys rather than play with them the way they were intended. I think the first sign occurred when he was just a baby, but I just thought he was afraid of heights; when anyone would playfully lift him up over their head or try to put him on their shoulders, he would scream in terror where as babies typically laugh. Yes, he still lives with me.

I think what most people are missing - that probably wasn't emphasized in this video - is the excessive and prolonged time of these behaviors. Yes, most babies do these things. However, with autism, it's excessive and all day long. It's not just opening and closing a door a few times, it's a repetitive action that can go on for a length of time up to an hour or more. And it is constant from day to day to day. The head shaking is all day long - constant. As we learn more about autism, new information is given. At one time, it was thought that autism only affected older children; I believe starting at age 4. Then it was aged 2. Now we are seeing signs in children that are younger. I'm 63 - retired mental health social worker. Back in the day, we called it "Stimming" and this behavior was usually found in developmentally delayed children (back then it was called "mental retardation".) Another example is one of my brothers who is 3 years younger than me. My parents took him to see a doctor because he tried to strangle a kid in kindergarten. His symptoms were: high pain threshold, excessively active, slept with his eyes half open.....he was like the Energizer Bunny. Back then, there weren't many child psychologists/psychiatrists so my parents took him to an adult psychiatrist. Fortunately, this Doctor had information on a new diagnosis ADHD. The option back then was to medicate with either Thorazine or Haldol - which thankfully, the doctor didn't want to do. So he advised my parents to provide as much activity and stimulation to counter the hyperness. And it helped. It wasn't until many, many years later that ADHD became an actual psych diagnosis and more appropriate medications were developed. We have a long ways to go in this field of autism and things will change as we learn more.

Thanks for being specific about what excessive means. I just asked a question about that. Because "excessive" is pretty vague and subjective. Your comment helped me understand more about it being all day long. My son only shakes his head about 4-7 times a day. But not all day long. Also your parents were very fortunate to get that doctor. The doctor was very ahead of his time.

When you mentioned excessively about opening and closing doors…..Until someone has a child on the Autism Spectrum, I don’t think they get what excessively really is…..My Autistic adult Son will still do it at times….He would rock back in forth hrs. on end too….Even in his sleep…..He is 42 yrs old and has come a long way….He is verbal but does have a speech issue. We have been together so long and we are in tune with each other….None of my relationships could handle him…So I’ve stayed single for 35 yrs. I will always choose my Son over anyone….This includes family and friends. My Son has Severe Hemophilia also….What a nightmare that is with an Autistic person. I wish Maddy and her family the best, as there is so much more help and therapy for her and others on the Spectrum than 42 yrs. ago. 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽💙💙💙🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

My sister has a son that is very high on the autism spectrum. She was in denial until the nurse at school evaluated him and called my sister right away. No real communication, doesn't want to play with the other kids, flapping his arms, noises would affect him greatly... Parents need to pay attention. There are so many spectrums of autism. He has been relocated to a special school specifically for children with autism & is doing well.

I just have to say this is reminding me how amazing the progress walking is for the person struggling with this is. It was difficult trying to get him to stand sometimes and walk significant distances and now the difficulty is getting him to dance. Which I did do for a minute recently! Also talking more! Intelligibly! Communicating what he wants even!! Repeating it so we get confirmation and maybe we didn't hear. I was worried it was never going to progress. He may have even said my name for the first time.

You should correct any child. People do not, this I do not understand. A child closing doors....stop them. A child sitting incorrectly or doesn't know how to crawl, correct them. Maybe autism is what happens when parents do nothing but let things take their own course and leads to chaos and havoc.

Generally, no. You cannot stop it from progressing. But getting support as early as possible is helpful. Autistic children have significantly faster expansion of the surface area of their cortex from 6 to 12 months of age. In the second year of life, brain volume increases much faster. It's a developmental disorder. It happens as their brains develop. However, you can do things things to keep you and your baby as healthy as possible to lower the risk of autism. Stay healthy and don't get sick (flu, etc) during pregnancy. When your baby is born, breastfeeding for 1 year was shown to decrease risk of autism. Not to mention studies have shown that breastfeeding can lower the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), diabetes, asthma among other things. Edit: Some mothers who can't produce milk opt to use donor milk. Breast milk has so so many things in it that humans simply cannot engineer into formula.

Looking for signs only leads to what you are looking for. All human brings are autistic in some form. Why do you think so many people are "OCD"? Its inate and we just manage to deal with these habits as we get roughed up in society. Its other people who manage people so as a species we have less weaknesses like extreme ocd which mamy adukts suffer from but they have never learned to subdue those impulses. Labelling a child as autistic is short sighted. My daughter did these and she loved putting lights on and off, opening and closing doors, clapping her hands etc. She is now 4 and is patient, smart, intuitive and a quick learner. Shes been talking and walking somce 11 months we have never involved a single doctor in her whole life. Fully potty trained, gets herself dressed, sleeps in her own bed, knows how to count to 20, lnows negotiation and has a memory like an elephant. We helped her understand eve4ything she goes through without hitting or shouting or labeling. Shes a wonderful human being so kind and empathetic. If we labelled her I dont even want to know where she would be 😢

Wow! Now I'm questioning everything I know about kids. She seems like a normal happy baby in this video. So does this mean that all busy babies and toddlers could have autism? Now I did learn that babies standing on their heads known as stemming is a sign which I assumed this one particular baby was just avoiding sleep or something. This video is very insightful.

Meu filho e minha filha são autistas, 31 e 29 anos. Ele não engatinhou normalmente, se arrastava e tomava impulso com um dos braços. Os outros sintomas mostrados aqui, ele não apresentou, nessa idade. Minha filha é bem diferente do meu filho.

There is alot of data stored in our dna from every animal we are relaxed too. Just like some animals can walk from birth, follow, eating, sounds and etc. When that information is damaged from a shorter Y chromosome. The child will exhibit strange behavior. They are relying on data that is not encoded for thier body.

@Oh_Maddy
@Oh_Maddy 5 ай бұрын
The ones who get it… get it. Autism is real. Yeah all toddlers will at some point open and close cabinets and doors… the difference is in the repetitiveness of this action. Typical toddlers will also get bored of it and move on where an autistic child will sit and do this for hours on end. Hope this helped clarify it a little.

I have autism, I disagree most of comments “my baby does so it’s normal. “ Autism is not binary distinction from neurotypical or autistic. It’s gradation. Also getting diagnosis earlier as possible reduce your child suffering from anxiety, which is the most key trait. I got 22 yso, diagnosed at this age and I had to do everything by myself. When I think how I was in childhood, I showed autistic behavior a lot to my family, teacher etc but none of them think me taking to specialist. As a result, from early teenage when children started to be more independent, social, and becoming an adult, due to unsupported environment I blame my self alot for all difficulty at making friends and social situation because of my “personality” bad. Also, I have ADHD as well and stimulated anxiety gets worse with it so untreated anxiety lead me suicidal thoughts every single day at age 13-22. THANKYOU. I got mid level of depression for 3 years in university and that was hell. When I talk to my mother, she always says, psychologist just prescribe medicine and makes you addicts. Or just hated to hear talking about disorder. Disorder or autism is stigmatised too much, when you say “this is normal, why todays society make everything disease” It just show no knowledge of autism
@ASmith-jn7kf
@ASmith-jn7kf 9 ай бұрын
All the knowledge you have is fed to you by someone else, those who prescribe the medications and benefit the most out of your diagnosis. You are told therefore you believe all of the things you mention could have a variety of causes that have nothing to do with autism and blaming it doesn't help you and doesn't cure anything so why exactly are you better off knowing such things? How have you benefitted from knowing now?

I'm sorry but I were a childminder nannie years in London.Ive had 2 of my own children, This behaviour for a baby to toddler is absolutely the most natural way of healthy growing in her own way. No way this is Autism. Feed her on health diet plenty natural liquids Still boil her water throughout life.Shes her own character she's not gonna get the inferiority complex surely that these bright imaginative children grow independently. This isn't Autism its such a healthy little girl.If you listen and look on the Internet for answers accept your own motherly instincts? Youl end up with an inferiority complex like so many Young Patents today. Children never suffered with anxiety, Mental illness over A Decade a go like today! The proof is there to nurture naturally, Play outside ,Ride a bike,Parks,Toddler groups,Singing & Pans & Spoo s as drums,Dens in the Garden,A soft pet small at 5 years onwards.A hobbies,Encourage Kind helping others,Read to them,Teach them the time.Be the kid you remember enjoying. This is the much grounded and nurturing stable. Start a Routine from the day you bring baby home.Feed on demand, keep baby swaddled in moses basket. Next to you. Move moses basket into cot when bigger,Always keep babies sides so they feel cocooned like your womb.When they start turning over themselves and standing playing in the cot......😂Youve smashed it as a new mum! This video is the perfect example of the saying: "If you look for something hard enough you are guaranteed to find it" All these things you are describing are things that 90% of babies do. Shaking your head is usually just a sign of teething and arm waving is something every baby I've ever interacted with does. The crawling thing is is normal too. A baby that bear crawls is almost as common as a baby who crawls normally. You say repeatedly opening and shutting doors is a "symptom of autism" yet one of the main symptoms of autism is a lack of mimicking. If anything that is evidence that she doesn't have autism! You keep calling these common behaviors "symptoms" but nothing you described is an actual clinically recognized symptom of Autism. Your baby is responding to your voice with eye contact and a smile in the video. Which means she lacks the most defining characteristic of an autistic baby. These are the actual symptoms that a doctor will look for: Lack of eye contact. Not responding to a parents voice. Expressionless face. Not saying single words by 16 months. Not laughing. Not Gesturing. Not mimicking parents or other children. Resists cuddling or physical contact. Doesn't respond to nonverbal cues.
