As a railroader who used to work this sub… this train was going probably 68-70 mph maybe a bit more if the speedometer was off. This is just one of the few towns where there are no slow curves or permanent speed restrictions, so the maximum speed is 70 for freight. Even if you cut the overspeed out, bad things would start happening if you made freight locomotives go 80 mph, like stuff would start coming unwound. The overspeed will put you in penalty braking around 73 mph. Amtrak engines are designed to go 90 mph, and Amtrak does go 90 through here, if I recall.

@@procrunchie4899 BNSF has a lot of trackage rated for 70 mph intermodal such as here. With the size of trains lately you won’t see 70 as much, but they are capable of it by rule. As for the MP36, they have never built a single unit rate above 110 mph. The ones used on NMRX is the MP36PH- 3C. They’re only rated for 102 mph because of the gearing and overspeed protected. We actually have a pair of them in Boston that are commuter rail agency bought from NMRX.

Watching the video you can do a little calculation. The locomotive is approximately 22.30 meters long, the transition from the nose to the tail of the lead locomotive, taking the pole as a reference, takes approximately 0.8 seconds, so the train is traveling at approximately 63-64 miles per hour
@FFred-us9twАй бұрын
Your math is not accurate. Their is two locomotive lengths that matter. Length of the locomotive itself and length over pulling faces.
