The Nora Hall Sharpening System can be used to sharpen chip carving knives. This system was originally designed to make sharpening wood carving tools incredibly fast and it does that job amazingly well.
As demonstrated in this video, it is possible to extend the utility of the Nora Hall Sharpening System and use it to sharpen some small carving knives. Chip carving knives are a perfect example of this. Especially chip carving knives with blades the same width as, or shorter than the width of the system wheel (1”/25 mm).
You may need to reload the wheel with sharpening paste between sides of a chip carving knife.
*** You will need to use a light touch when sharpening carving knives. Carving knives are much thinner that most wood carving tools and thus wear away far faster. If you’re not careful, this can leave some thin tools with an edge that is slightly wavy, not straight.
Wheel speed in this video is 1,500 rpm.

Hello sharpening long blades work best if you use a tool rest or holder no matter what power sharpening system you use. I did notice your wheel was a little wobbly and that may have made it more difficult. I use a regular bench grinder with my Nora Hall system and have no problems at all.

I agree. Not being able to leave the wheel mounted is less than ideal. And a wide tool rest would help keep any blade longer than the width of the wheel stable while sharpening. However, when used with the lathe tool rest this (admittedly less than ideal) set up still works well for sharpening carving tools and flat chisels less than an inch wide. It’s good to get some input from an actual user of the Nora Hall System. Thanks for watching and commenting.

At which angle are you sharpening your tools ? 15-20°?

On chip carving knives the angle is much less. Probably around 10 degrees or less. In one of his books, Wayne Barton demonstrated the angle he uses for chip carving knives by putting a dime under the blunt side of the blade. That is the gauge I’ve always used, but I don’t know the exact angle. That said, the Nora Hall Sharpening System is *far* faster than hand sharpening on any type of stone. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and asking a question.
