If you’ve worked with Animals, they are smarter than a lot of humans. Treating them with kindness makes all the difference in the world. I’ve seen horses kneel on their own (not trained) to help a young child get on. We took in a horse that had a bad reputation for throwing/bucking riders off and within 3 months he was the sweetest easy to ride stud you’ve ever seen. While we didn’t have sheep, they can’t be that different. Be a bit gentle their first time with you, be kind, and all future interactions with them will be better.

So fabulous, and so much skill needed to shear a very pregnant sheep. One of my Jacobs had to be shorn about 2 weeks before she had twins. He was teaching his sons about shearing and it was interesting to hear the way that he explaining the difficulties and techniques needed to get rid of the fleece carefully in a way that won't stress the ewe. Lovely careful job!

I remember the days in the 70s and 80s shearing sheep for the farmer down the road from us. We always looked fwd to his call. It was a nice change from milking 50 cows twice a day. Sheering was always at night after our last milking. Loved it! I can appreciate sheep farmers.

Whoa! Thats one giant fleece! Some shepherds shear their ewes just before breeding because they can get too uncomfortably big to safely manipulate on a shearing floor but she looks like an outdoor ewe and it looks a little snowy in the background, in which the call is to try to keep their fleeces on as long as possible to keep them warm. Shearing at least around the girl parts of the belly and back-end makes lambing less messy, more sanitary and gives the lambs good access to nursing. She just got a mommy makeover!

I agree. She is so so gentle with her clients. The kid that shears for Sandi Brock is an absolute menace and I skip her videos that have him shearing. It's so nerve wracking watching him throw those sheep around like they're bags of grain. He should watch these two and learn a thing or two.

Have found FinnSheep the easiest to shear as they don't get a greasy skin like Suffolk etc. Also the kink in the wool seems to be higher up, so less resistance. May not agree with me, but found that when dealing with kicking nervous Nellies, it helps to put the shears on their snout. This gets them used to the vibration and noise. It takes about 20 seconds, but saves a lot of grief. You have to show them who's boss!

Do you know why the older part of her fleece brown, instead of black? Was she lacking minerals during the formation of the older wool? Or does it just fade from the sun? In goats, that would have been due to a copper deficiency, but I know sheep supposedly can't handle as much copper as goats can.
