I like that u mentioned Andy Warhols campbell cansoup. I love how Vetements takes everyday items and re present it in a way that it creates new meanings and silhouettes.

I think the beauty of Vetements irony is that it's not exclusive to the clothing itself, in a way anyone who supports the brand and buys their products is swept up in the social commentary; basic graphic shirts with messages making fun of consumer culture, yet the expensive price tag categorises it as one of the very brands they attempt to criticize. However, they also seem to permeate notions of genuine political, social and humanitarian concern throughout their collections to give the irony substance. Without those observations I feel as though Vetements would be on a steady decline.

But this great balance between a joke and a status symbol is precisely what makes Vetements so successful!
@cybrself
@cybrself 3 жыл бұрын
@@SlavicSnowWhite well just like most jokes, they're based on contemporary perceptions of the world, Vetements is the much needed comic relief in an industry that does so well on reflecting and commenting on the world around it, but never itself

And I don’t blame them! Especially with Vetements, it is easy to get carried by the superficial looks away from the real message.

You said it Vêtements is making fashion shows with a message, like Warhol did when he printed tomato cage. Their goal is merely artistic and whoever buys their clothes commits to artistic independence and freedom of speech

Vetements use of the Matrix was to continue the theme of anarchy. I feel like they overestimated this show with a bunch of pieces. Felt overwhelming and unfocused in my opinion. Love your commentary on it tho. Vetements still has a lot of odd energy to it.

Exactly, I also felt that the collection was a bit all over the place, difficult to grasp the particular references. I also feel like it would be a lot more influential, like their Spring 2019 collection, for instance 🤷🏼‍♀️

i dont think this was designed by demna - it seems tru that he has left the brand, but his energy and ideas were studied, translated, recreated, etc by some of the designer who saw him work there

ive been thinking about vetements for the past month. even tho vetements is on a "decline" globally, it is one of the steady-sellers here in korea. the way people wear and advertise vetements is so funny to me tho, the shops or sellers always say "this iconic vetements hoodie has a genius touch of orange 'V' logo on the back of this black hoodie". it's cringe and hilarious to see vetements pieces being advertised that way and to see people buy those pieces after hearing those descriptions from the sellers, but i guess it's part of the consumer culture demna is trying to make fun of. it's interesting to learn about vetements, balenciaga, and ultiimately about demna. the older i get, the more i appreciate it. in korea, 95% of the people dress the same and they almost always follow how celebrities dress themselves. diversity is usually not celebrated, different styles are mostly rejected and considered 'weird'. it's my first time in many years to stay in korea for this long; i cannot stand to live in such pedestrian homogeneity, and i even get this weird urge to wear something that mocks this phenomenon. it'd be fun to make the most mainstream style of clothings in the most opposite fitting hahaha. ^ sorry for a long ass comment, but i really really appreciate your channel and it's fascinating to have a source to learn about the references that i would never fully understand because i never grew up in it. i do have one questions tho, what would demna think about counterfeit vetements tees? as much as i agree with the what you said demna's works have similar spirit that andy warhol had with his works, but i do not want to be the victim of the consumer culture that he's poking fun of. However, I feel like his works are similar to those political cartoons, making satires to what we see in society. In this spirit, do you think wearing fake vetements would be as blasphemous as it would to purchase fake, idk, louis vuitton? (or to follow this spirit, should i rather create my own mockery just like demna did?) Sorry sorry sorry for a long comment but it's been in my head for over a month!!

Oh wow, that’s a substantial comment, I gotta say 😂 First of all, I am really surprised about you vilifying street style in Korea. It is my main dream destination and a big inspo in terms of fashion, but, I guess, the grass is always greener. To be honest, I don’t think Demna cares about fakes a single tiny bit, as he is making insane profit off selling low cost garments for luxury price. The question is why you would wear fake Vetements in the first place. If you do buy fake Vetements, you fall into the consumerism trap that Demna is making fun of, and, most probably, don’t get what he is trying to say. Thus, a hoodie ceases to be a statement, but becomes a mere piece of cloth 🤷🏼‍♀️

@@SlavicSnowWhite thanks for replying so quick! and i was actually just about to make another comment to clarify my question in terms of the fake stuff. i wasnt saying i was gonna buy fake vetements but it was coming from a story that i read today. earlier this afternoon, i learned that about two years ago, vetements opened a pop up store in a rather country side of korea and called the event "the original fake". what was interesting to me was that demna apparently was trying to mock the fake market in korea. from the article, i read the vetements team gathered all the fake vetements garments and then repurposed, and authenticated them, selling them for their regular retail price. pieces still sold out and are still reselling here, and even in the secondary market as well (they're called the 'Nam-yang-ju' collection). i guess koreans answered the question of "are these people really gonna buy garments that only repurposed, but not produced by the vetements team" lmaooo. and good point in buying fake vetements piece. fake warhol is only a fake warhol; fake demna is fake demna. i can go on and on about my point of view with the street style of korea. we do have very good up and coming designers but the streets....i'll save this one for later haha

I've lived in Korea before and totally agree with your statement that mostly everyone dresses the same and the fashion there is quite boring, unlike other countries such as Japan. And there is nothing wrong with wearing replica products. Luxury shouldn't be only for the wealthy. After all Demna said himself he is trying to make his stuff more accessible but charging insane prices for them when all his stuff looks like homeless clothes.

I was kind of disappointed that this video was so short, there was much more to talk about (i.e. the Hong Kong protester references). I would love to see a Part II video on this collection that would go deeper on that particular subject (it stirred up a lot of hate on Diet Prada from Western readers, but I don't think it was justified and it was more of a "I am offended in the name of others" moment). Also, as a Vetements consumer, I have to add that their garments, while simple, are not low quality. For t-shirts, for example, the cotton used is VERY thick and has the nice touch of the kind of the European-made garments that you would thrift in Eastern Europe in the nineties and early two thousands (it's definitely nothing the sorts of fast fashion items like Zara or H&M). At least that's the case with the pieces that I bought and that are certainly going to be staying in my wardrobe for a very long time.

I completely agree with your point on the Hong Kong protests, I feel like it was a bit of a stretch since Vetements had very artistic reference, not profiting off of it directly. Regarding the quality, I called the clothes cheap not because of their quality, but because of the cuts they use. No matter how organic the cotton is, or where the t-shirt is made, it will never cost hundreds of dollars to produce, because it is a simple cut and simple fabric.

I think the matrix references might be in relation to the whole of 2020 being mainly online, online fashion week being only a simulation of fashion week to make us feel that the SS/FW cycle is still relevant in such times?
