WHen my dad was in the Navy in Vietnam, he had a minor injury (broken foot) and was in sick bay. His Captain came in and told him, you *have* to write a letter to your mother. Dad was like What? And he said "She's driving people nuts because you haven't written her. She has a freaking senator on my butt." Dad was like "I have nothing to write on or with in here." The Captain threw a roll of toilet paper at him and a pen. Grandma got a long letter on toilet paper. True. Story. haha

@@Michellef1117 I emailed my sons base CO when he was in basic training. I was worried that he wasn't eating enough. I paid the bills for my sons food for years, I knew what amount he ate!! It killed me to see him after basic training!! He was skin and bones!! When I emailed his CO about it, the response was "your SOLDIER" is doing what he needs to do. Not in those words, but what my interpretation of those words were. It was HARD to let my little boy go!! But you know what that's like

When you talk about getting/writing letters, my brother who was serving as a Marine during Desert Storm told me that the letters and care packages were what kept him and his fellow Marines sane. I wrote him every single day and sent him baked goods every few days. His men really enjoyed when he got packages because he would get so many of them (he's the 16th of 18 siblings) and we all contributed. Thankfully he made it home.

Such an amazing song, makes me emotional every single time. My Daddy is a Vietnam Veteran. Any song related to this ultimate sacrifice always makes me think of him. He's still alive yes, but he's almost 70. After losing my mother suddenly in November (she was only 66) I never take anyone I love for granted ever. I hope he doesn't leave anytime soon, but omg this song...Toby really hits hard with his music. I also feel so very proud of to be an American. ♥♥♥♥♥

I remember my dad being called in at all hours (he was in communications) never got a break, never got time off. He was only deployed a few times, but even at “home” he was still an Airman every hour. He’s retired now, he for sure earned it. Edit: Oh my gosh I did the same thing as your daughter! My dad was deployed when I was 3 months old, I was about 9 months old when he came back. My mom had a picture of him that she always would tell me was “Daddy”. When he got home I apparently compared him to his picture very carefully before I allowed a hug lol

My late father was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. When his time was up, he enlisted into the Marines. My husband is a Navy Vet during the Gulf Wars. My Son is an Army vet, touring in Iraq and Afghanistan. I didn't know my dad. He was away when I was born. My husband and son don't talk about their service. My son was not the same as when he went in. I miss the boy that left, but love the man who returned. I thank you, Billy, so very much for your service, along with the other men and women who have served. You all are amazing people for the sacrifices that you have made. Thank you seems so small.

There is so much that is sacrificed. It's not just the men and women serving. It's also the husband's and wifes left behind with their kids. I remember all to well hanging onto the chain link fence bawling bc I was sad, watching my daddy board the submarine. Even as a child you knew there was that chance that daddy wouldn't come back. Thank you to all service men and women. ❤❤❤

I lost a very dear friend of mine in Afghanistan and this video made me cry because it brought back the feelings of losing him. Servicemen/women deserve everything and should NEVER come home and have to worry about anything. Too many soldiers are lost in service, and too many to their own hands later. My dad was a Marine and he was gone so much, he was home 18 months in 8 years, my older brother and I were so little we would be waiting for dad and every Marine we would see, we would say is that daddy...is that daddy. But then there he would be and we KNEW. We would take off running to him and he would swoop us both up in a huge hug until mom reached him then we were put down and she was in the big hug. Sweet memories.

Our first child was 5 months old when my husband had to leave for 3 months training, come home for 1 week of leave and then leave for 1 year in Korea with no leave. We tried to get our son to take his first steps before my husband got on the plane to Korea. He wouldn’t do it. I got home from the airport and my son took his first steps that night. 🥲 My husband was so upset. This was long before cellphones and taking videos in a second. By the time he got back from Korea and we got to our next duty station, it was a month before our son’s second birthday. Hard times back then.

my youngest son is current Army Corporal.. ive had other members of my family in the Military mostly the Army as far back as around the Civil War.. had 1 great uncle during WWII done his time in the Army and when he returned from Europe instead of re-enlisting in the Army he joined the Navy and was shipped out to the pacific til the end of the war.. i want to say thank you for yours and others on here service.. my son just came home safe, sound, and without incident from over seas, we missed him like crazy while he was gone.. most people dont understand that its not just the current active members or the vets that the separation is hard on but its hard on the families left behind.. right before he left he made a family group chat messenger on facebook and we were able to talk to him almost every day while he was either at basic, A I, on maneuvers, or over seas.. since he came home i havnt deleted the group messenger and ive been thinking about printing it out if i can get it to change fonts to a cursive writing, so it would would look like written messages.. he sent us some amazing pics from the different places hed been.. i agree with you about the health care for our vets, not just because of my son but because ive had uncles, great uncles, cousins and friends that have had to go into debt for medical care, not gotten the care they needed, or were put on a waiting list for nearly a year for a surgery they needed, this was before my son joined.. was so happy when it passed that vets could see civilian drs to cut down on alot of the wait time and certain medicine wasnt as expensive for the vets to go thru civilian pharmacy..

At every Toby Keith Courtesy of the USA and American Soldier is his finale. He invites all military personal retired or active on stage. One time he had a gentleman in a wheelchair who was in Korea I think. A true. American.

When I joined the Army, Jimmy Carter was President. I was straight out of High school in 1978 . My favorite TV shows was Moving On and B J and the Bear. Went in to get training to be a truck driver. Did not help a bit when I got out. I still had to take a truck driving school to get certified . other then basic and advanced training. My whole time was spent in Fort Riley, KS. well enough about me . Thank you for your service as well.
