Winter Nights or Old Norse vetrnætr was a specific time of year in medieval Scandinavia. According to Zoega's Concise Dictionary of Old Icelandic, vetr-nætr referred to "the three days which begin the winter season". The term is attested in the narrative of some of the Fornaldarsögur, mostly to express passage of time ("as autumn turned into winter"). Specific sacrifices held at the beginning of winter during the Old Norse period were álfablót and dísablót. Of these, dísablót came to be a public sacrifice, according to the Ynglinga saga performed by the king of Sweden. By contrast, álfablót was a sacrifice held at each homestead separately for the local spirits, under the explicit exclusion of any strangers.

My girlfriend and I made a large pot of soup since the weather is getting cooler and we were joking about how we could feel the nourishment supplementing our body. Later as I was walking my dog I noticed how full the moon looked and I was really taking the time to appreciate the night with my boy. Then after I get back coincidentally I see this video and learn that I in a way celebrated this holiday without even being aware of it. It’s a nice little feeling as I end the night

Sometimes, imagination is enough to find those connections. Cultural traditions don't just disappear. They still reside in the subconscious if you're part of that lineage.

I live in a yurt in the north of Scotland and yesterday was a full moon, our shower is outside and it is truly magical to be under the abundance of water in front of the moon which was so brightly lit. I was as if absorbed by it, my white skin in the moonlight. Then I put on a garment of wild silk and made offerings to the landvœttir, the Disir and Frigg and Oddin. Without knowing any of this. A real connection. For the first time my husky fell asleep outside under the moon.

Its interesting the Norse and Celts seem to have begun the day at sunset. I wish we had as much information on the Celtic pagans as you do the Norse. I lament the fact most of our history is lost.

If you need info on the Celts you just need to come to Germany. We have quite a few places that we uncovered where the Celts lived. Glauberg even has a very nice museum about the Celts and in built on a settlement from them. We also have ring wall that will leave your jaw on the floor in Oztenhausen. I’ve been to many places here in Germany and have never seen anything like that anywhere. There is a ton of misinformation out there about the Celts. But if you know where to go you’d be surprised at what has been found.

We had a wonderful time up near Lake Superior camping in the woods (I wish I grabbed my correct sleeping bag rather than the summer 45⁰ bag, oops). Of course the bear hounds were running as it's bear season here currently. Sunday afternoon after our hike we found another secluded spot and did our short but sweet ceremony. This week, the last of the garden comes in. For me, a ceremony doesn't need to be too elaborate, I don't even think I necessarily do "it right", which I find to be a bit subjective, I just do what comes to me. For me, it's all about being out and one with the wild places.

I'm finding something interesting this year around the "thinning of the viel". I live in New Zealand so our seasons are switched which youd think would mean our holidays would be changed around to accommodate but still, the feeling of the viel thinning that you get in the northern hemisphere is how I feel during our summer. Not sure if I'm saying this right but it would seem that the spirits are locked onto this time of the year, summer or winter aside 🤔

Tacitus didn't said "full moon", he said "either new or full moon", his exact words were: "Coeunt, nisi quid fortuitum et subitum incidit, certis diebus, cum aut incohatur luna aut impletur; nam agendis rebus hoc auspicatissimum initium credunt", which translates as "they gather, unless a sudden mishap happens, in certain days, when moon is either new or full, because they consider it to be most auspicious to begin their activities".

It's sad we lost so much of our old culture in Germany. But not long ago, I found out the reason for the great fear of my grandmother about hanging stuff on clothes lines during Christmas and New Year. She always told me something bad will happen then. I found out, it's a 2000 year old fear of Odin and his hordes, riding and fighting during the so called Rauhnächte (nights between 21st December and New Year I think). If some of them may get stuck into your clothes, they will take someone with them to Hel (the underworld of the death). Amazing that this fear continues!

In the Frisian lands one might.still see the custom to make a "pleng" sacrifice during this time of the year. Basically one bakes a sweet bread or cake, and one offers pieces of that bread dipped in honey to the land and ancestors.

It seems very intriguing to me that so many viewers get hyper- concerned about sweating the trivial details when in fact the Norse were just celebrating life on these different occasions. Traditions and celebrations change over time So why not make your own Vetrnætr traditions and celebrate the life you live.

Even in the video, he mentioned full moon new moon take your choice or do you think Oðinn will strike you with a curse. And from what I've seen even the source material can be open to interpretation. And I don't think the old Norse tradition police will come knocking on ours doors if you modify it a tad. But that's me

Happy new year, just finished my handmade stone mjolnir on the new year while giving my offering. Wish I had a way to attach a pic, it’s sweet. With so much emphasis on fertility and the harvest, I have to wonder if the German Oktoberfest was originally a much more heathen celebration.
@thousanduniverses
@thousanduniverses Жыл бұрын
Actually the Oktoberfest originated from the celebration from the marriage between Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen in 1810 :D But in September and October there are markets where people sell handmade things, harvested pumpkins, food from the region and fairs with carousels etc. all over Germany. In the meanwhile the Oktoberfest is kind of like a gigantic version of these smaller attractions.

@@thousanduniverses Thank you for the history, I find the official history interesting as well, though I am inclined to believe that many of the later recognized celebrations were likely rooted in the agrarian pagan practices of the ancient past.
