Vexx is many things: Super Mario 64 for Edgy Bois, Pastiche, Forgotten, A joke or a punchline for those who remember, and above all else... unremarkable.
And that's okay!
I love Vexx!
Special thanks to the fine folks in the Vexx discord group for getting me in touch with people who worked on the game and helping me gather assets and stories from the games development!

Basically sent this video out knowing it would die and get no views. I made it cause I wanted to talk about vexx. That said, it gave me a chance to experiment with thumbnails. Which one did y'all get? Vexx face with logo? Vexx and Reia booby thumbnail? Or Bright and simple with my face on it?

Very interesting. I remember this game existing back in 2003 but I ignored it. I guess it just didn’t have my interest. I think what happened was that during the N64 era I had my fill of 3D platformers and was looking something different when it came to the GameCube. I didn’t have much of an interest in Mario 64. But Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tootie I loved and beat those. I think it was around this time that I started to realize that I also loved JRPG gaming. I was still playing FF7 in 2003 for example and realized that I loved that game. So in 2003 I think that is when I got Skies Of Arcadia Legends and got consumed in that world. So yeah, there are plenty of reasons why I ignored this one back then.

It's kind of funny. I remember taking a loan of this game from Blockbuster back when I was like 10. I ended up playing it only once, never got past the first world, and most of my playtime was messing around with the sun-dial there. All I recall is trying out the climbing and swimming obstacles right at the starting area. And yet, I still remember the game two decades latter. Fondly remember at that weirdly. I only really learned more about it like in the last couple years from channels like Nitrorad and SomecallmeJohnny. And I guess here now too.

I reckon that at some point James from NitroRad may want to make a new video on Vexx like he did with the Ty trilogy (so far). It's one of his oldest 3D platformer vids at this point.

I just finished watching the whole thing. I have this on the backlog, and now I'm really wanting to try it. Vexx occupies a similar space in the zeitgeist that Ty the Tasmanian Tiger has imo (though at least Ty is getting HD ports), and I really enjoyed Ty's games. So I'm sure I'll enjoy Vexx.

I was very excited to see this video after hearing you mention the game before, glad I got to learn about it. I might try it out if I get the chance. I agree about not needing every game to be revolutionary, people should give the unremarkable games a chance more often. You might just find a game considered average by many that ends up appealing perfectly to your unique personal tastes and becoming one of your new favorites. At least that's definitely happened for me with games like Senran Kagura (how I discovered your channel a couple years back!) and more recently with another PS2 era action platformer called Whiplash. I remember playing the demo a lot on my dad's PS2 as a kid, and I only just got to play it fully in the past year after rediscovering Jampack demo discs (could only play on emulator unfortunately).

I agree with this statement *very* strongly. It's stupid to want every game by every studio or developer to want to "PUSH THE LIMITS" or something. Even worse if it gets described as "the industry" as a whole. Developers have their own journeys of understanding, skill, failures and successes and the like to go through. Give 'em a chance based on what they have to offer on their own. There may be more to remark (positively, negatively or otherwise) than one may expect. Especially if, like you said, it aligns well with one's personal tastes. For another good 3D platformer type adventure, I can warmly recommend Kya: Dark Lineage. Kya as such doesn't have many innate platforming abilities, but throughout the game you come across little bits and segments of different platforming styles and *very* light stealth & puzzles. - Wall climbing - Wind gliding - Board sliding - Animal riding - And sydiving On top of this, there's a surprisingly in-depth combat system for a 3D platformer type game. Some have described it as being like a mini-Tekken. You start off with some kick-and-punch combos, some of which have properties like a simple three-hit punch, hitting low twice really quickly, two hits before leading into an uppercut, a low kick into an uppercut and then kicking away the enemy, etc. Then you gain expanded kick moves such as leg sweeps and double backflip kicks, depending where you hold the joystick. After that comes the Grabs, which differ depending on where you stand relative to the enemy, you get moves where you grab their tails to again kick them away or use them as a flail, you can jump over their shoulders to get behind them or onto them to send them careening into their allies, and more. The enemies aren't dumb punching bags either. There's three main types and different subtypes, and learn at different speeds what moves you use the most and will block accordingly. Higher ranks and subtypes learn quicker than others. So you have to switch up your moves, or reposition yourself, or use a grab (hard counter to blocking). But enemies can also perform special grabs on you if *you* block for a long time. For more recent titles, can warmly recommend the likes of Clash: Artifacts of Chaos (Zeno Clash prequel), Cookie Cutter, and Soulstice (character action/hack-and-slash type game, like Darksiders, DMC and stuff). Cookie Cutter especially applies in this context. The lead dev has a philosophy of "Fetish no fashion"-- not referring to a sexual fetish, but to make that what really appeals to you. He fully knew how niche it would be, proverbially fought tooth and nail to find a publisher that would not try to exert influence over the project, and still went on a pretty big journey of about six years to make a good game. To make something not better, not worse, but different, hoping that it will still reach many people. He's got more planned too and i'm very excited for it.

Vexx is an underrated masterpiece. It kinda bugs me how everyone says that it's just a Mario 64 clone. Nobody is really saying that shit to a souls like for some reason.

For the longest time "soulslike" and "Souls-clones" were kind of both in use. You used to hear it a lot more. Structure-wise Vexx is very similar to Mario 64 but I like vexx's stage design and objectives a lot more.
