The complete CGI shot of Smith on the motorcycle brandishing the pistol was the single most convincing live-action-replacement shot I’ve ever seen. While Weta's approach to realism is often more science than art, the talent and skill of the artists are the only way that approach could even work. Their models could literally be used for medical research purposes in some cases, and the level of detail and knowledge each artist utilizes is so vast and in-depth, they could almost be experts in the scientific fields of study of the real-life subjects they're tasked with recreating. I'm constantly amazed by the work they do, and it's awesome to see and hear them talk about their craft. Great episode.

There was an episode of the "Farscape" TV series that opened on a closeup of a pair of eyes, and you could feel the grief and sorrow radiating from them (a major character had died at the end of the previous episode). Absolutely loved the peek into the pore workflow and tech. Having spent a LOT of time making characters for games this is exactly the kind of thing that gets me excited. The way the skin tone shifts with movement, pore stretching/skin creasing and even with all that, I can immediately tell it's a CG face. But, it's soo good. We are getting closer and closer to CG being indistinguishable from reality, the problem is our eyes/mind are trained to notice some incredibly subtle things about faces and how they animate, many of which we don't even realize until someone points it out. And the eyes.... The bane of every 3d artist trying to make realistic looking characters in a real time medium..... Awesome video as always!

The director commentary for Grand Prix has some insane details about how they captured the angles in Monaco, including flying a helicopter so low that the cameraman had leaves stuck to his ankles 😅. It’s so tough to get realistic car stunts, and very few movies & shows actually do it right. Jackie Chan has a car movie also, Thunderbolt, which is also great fun… I’d also love to see an episode where it’s all comedy movies/TV shows because there are sometimes WILD stunt gags that end up under the radar. I guess that's why some scenes in Gemini man looked super uncanny valley, but others were spot on. I'll take a gander that the spot-on ones were done by WETA. That tech he's describing with the pores and the colors shifting of the sub-surface is really mind blowing. The eyes stuff too... no more faking it with textures they really just built an entire eye. WOW.

some of the issues in that movie visually had a lot to do with the decision to use 120fps. watching it at 60fps it makes the movements look too rapid and makes the CGI stand out way too much especially during the chase scene.

Had the privilege of working at Weta way back during the LOTR days, and know Guy from back then. Even then, the rigging and rendering were top notch, and it's only gotten better since. The amount of thought and attention to the tiny details is amazing. I gotta say, though - we did a camera pull through an open wound at Valve in Meet The Pyro, way back in 2012.

These videos really put into perspective that people take CGI for granted way too much... I remember people absolutely demolishing Gemini Man and She-Hulk's CGI saying it looked terrible when it's actually some of the most advanced digital characters out there. I will never take that kind of work for granted because every time I watch these breakdowns my mind is blown away by the amount of things I couldn't even imagine you'd have to consider when making these effects.
@BioshadowX

The technology behind it could be as afvanced as it ever could be but if at the end of the day it looks like shit then it looks like shit. The high end generative models are some of the most complex things humans have EVER made in terms of technical and data prowess yet at the end of the day people still bash it, because off the results are still not great.
@Swenglish
@Swenglish 9 ай бұрын
Yeah...the thing people don't get is that different things (also depending on context) bring different levels of challenge. Making a rigid cube look real is not the same challenge as making a human look real, and making a human *who talks* look real is so much more complicated than making one who doesn't, etc.. And lighting, hair, it all contributes to how challenging it is to reach perfect photorealism. It's not like Iron Man's suit is equal to She-Hulk's face in terms of difficulty of making it look passably realistic. Or even the Hulk vs MODOK. MODOK being more human-looking inherently raises the threshold. The sheer amount of footage needed is also a factor, because the work gets spread thin if there are a lot of shots to do. What people call "bad CGI" is so often a misunderstanding of how different the thresholds are for different things.
@xmatobujnakx
@xmatobujnakx 9 ай бұрын
@@Swenglish dont mention ..you dont have reference for hulks but you can build reference for ironman suit
@Swenglish
@Swenglish 9 ай бұрын
@@xmatobujnakx That too. The closest reference you have for hulks is...the actors playing them. And matching all that detail, not just of form but of movement, is...a lot. And then you have to solve the color problem, which is affected by lighting and, again, movement, as well, because a hulk isn't supposed to look like a human with green paint on. The green is supposed to be under the skin, and there's no perfect reference for that. Dp you treat it as green melanin? Green blood? Those are different effects (and I'm sure they tried both while experimenting just to see what looks better). And then that has to work in low light scenarios as well as bright lamps, natural sunlight, diffuse sunlight, etc... And personally, I think the only lighting scenario where they didn't quite get there was inside the GLK&H building (which had big windows PLUS reflective interior PLUS electric lights, so that's just a whole shitstorm of complicated lighting to match). So of course people zero in on those specific shots (or worse, unfinished shots from the first trailer) to say that She-Hulk looks notably bad in the entire show, when that just simply isn't true. There were plenty of shots where she looks about as good as I've ever seen a CGI human look, and that's especially remarkable for a TV show, considering just how many effects shots it had to have. Comparing it to for example the Martian Manhunter in the Supergirl TV show, it's a huge difference, and a big part of that is how little time that show had to spend on post production per episode.
@EthanRom

The haters couldn’t even make 20 seconds of these shots. I know the CG is sometimes not perfect, but that’s okay. That’s how technology advances thru progress and mistakes along the way.

A few stop action miniatures. If you look through the fandom directory you will be hard pressed to find enough CGI shots to fill an episode. The phoenix, a hellhound, a fire beast, maybe the occasional lightning bolt. Remember the show came out in 1995. Rendering the simplest of CGI effects would have literally taken months. Having rendered effects back then I promise you i'm not exaggerating. It would have taken MONTHS. So there isn't much there to talk about. However you could fill hours and hours of content on stuntmen reacts.
