how did you hook up the vgt i want to do the 6.0 turbo swap on my obs 7.3 powerstroke

and did you tap it in to the pcm and idm and if you did how did you do it

@@dylanlindeman3962 It was 12 years ago so I wouldn't recommend doing things how I had to do them back then. I had a separate low bit ECU that only ran the vain actuator for the 6.0 turbo. I believe it took a throttle position sensor input and a cam position input. There are companies that can do this much more easily today like Holley for example.

At an idle I’d say this thing has a slight bit of extra blowby. Nothing wildy excessive. The rings on these IDIs sucked. Nature of the beast. These engines just fly apart to let you know when they’re done lol

So what psi would you want to have it open the vgt all the? Great idea though I have access to a vgt and was thinking of using it but wasn’t sure on when to bring it in

@@bryangoff1904 The purpose of VGT is to make the "orifice" smaller to spool up, but then open it to allow more exhaust flow. So you figure out what vane position you want for spool, then figure out where you want to start transitioning from "spool" to "flow" and set your wastegate preload to there. You might need an adjustable stop to not choke the turbine down completely. So let's say you set the wastegate to start moving at 8psi, set your stop for the vane actuator, preload to 8psi, then it'll start moving the vanes at 8psi and stroke out fully when the spring in the wastegate is overcome. The trick will be matching wastegate stroke to actuator throw. You could make the actuator stop moveable and when you move the stop, the WG preload will push the vanes shut and give you an exhaust brake.

Its actually backwords (boost vs vacum ) from a regular wastegate on most vnt's ( tdi comes to mind) remember diesel has no vacum at the intake. ( most use a vacum pump )

@@drewdavis239 I'm not sure what Diesel WG actuator you are talking about. On a 7.3 PS actuator, you unscrew it to preload the WG shut, then as boost is applied it releases the preload and moves the actuator. Same exact actuator and principal is what I'm talking about.

I always thought about the 11-14 compound single also, modding it to utilize a wastegate to control the VGT by exhaust back pressure........... I mean a good set of head studs, fire-ring the heads, billet main girdle from hypermax, R&D's stage 1 cam and upgraded injector pump, and sumps for the fuel tanks would make the old 7.3 IDI's damn near bulletproof for an already rated million-mile engine (if kept in good operating condition)
