VHS VCRs Revisited, with some Vintage Commercials!

Let's compare two 40-year-old Panasonic VCRs that have been sitting outdoors, then bring one inside and see if it still works! This is a follow up to the "80s VCR vs 90s VCR vs 2000s VCR" video we uploaded 8 years ago! Today, in 2020, we're going to revisit the topic (this time in 4K). We'll look at differences in build quality and discuss if a VTR is even worth repairing. While a vintage stereo can sound just as good as modern audio equipment video is not so easy... So what do you do with an old VHS player? My opinion is capture the interesting stuff like family movies and old TV commercials, and save serious movie watching for HD video. At the end of the video, we'll show you some old commercials so you can see what the quality of VHS tapes from the 1980s and 1990s looks like now.

The early Panasonic VCR models shown are the PV-1200 and the PV-1210. These were both sold at the same time here in Memphis at the local Target store. I visited the store as a child with my dad in 1981 and we came home with the PV-1210 shown here. Many years later, when I was older, my uncle gave me the PV-1200. It wouldn't work and he had been beating on it, which caused the crack in the lid. (After he gave it to me, I had the PV-1200 running again a few days later....)

This Panasonic VCR right here will make kid love VHS more. This is way better than a modern DVD/VCR Combo bullcrap from Magnavox

Incredible how the circuit board has shrunk with the later models. The units from the 90s had the best image but have bad rubber belts (won't eject cassette), and bad capacitors inside the power supply - not difficult to fix. Units from late 90s early 2000s had the bad Taiwan capacitors - many of them, not worth fixing, either no image or no sound. Speaking about image quality, it's not a matter of definition, but a matter of memories. Many original cassettes have lost some magnetism by now, resulting in washed off colors. You can still record a new cassette and be amazed of the intense colors. Keep in mind, VCR play only 4:3 format, so the top and bottom of the image will be chopped on a wide screen.

Yes, a lot of very old equipment such as these larger VCRs and console stereos are likely to disappear since they are difficult to move and store... Thanks for the comment, and good luck on your channel - that Sony equalizer looks nice!!

I will bet I have ten vcrs/vcr camcorders and OTHER "stuff" still under the "tired" roof of my "mobile home" (trailer)! I haven't tried most since 2010, but I'll BET that most work! These COST PLENTY (new), but they had QUALITY BUILD!

1:21 I have both those VCRs The nice thing about those late 70s early 80s VCRs they were built like a tank and they were pretty much bulletproof except for the belts. I’ve had mine for years both of them and they still work great if they’re kept in a very nice environment free from moisture and dirt they will pretty much work. The only sad thing is, they’re only mono they’re not stereo it’s too bad my newer VCRs are stereo. But I used to always love those top loaders. The only Achilles’ heel, that those two machines have is the little lightbulb that is underneath the top loading mechanism without that the VCR won’t work. But you can find close enough replacements, which I had to do with mine. They just plug-in a two prong socket. And I still have the original boxes those VCRs came in when new

Magnavox (my FIRST vcr, purchased USED in December "87) was DAMNED NEAR IDENTICAL to my (used-newer '89) Mitsubishi vcr and TWO Panasonic machines after that!

We had a 1978 Magnavox VCR when they first hit the consumer market. Looked pretty identical to your Panasonics. I remember it needing repairs several times when I was a kid. We were the first on the block to have the newest tech as my father operated a small appliance store. "Blade Squad"... Jeez. I don't remember that one and am pretty glad I never saw it..

Panasonic built VHS machines for RCA, Magnavox (and other companies) back in the late 1970s, so yes, that's why they are identical and probably use the same chassis.

@@KylesDigitalLab I looked at the service manuals for the Panasonic PV-1100 and the RCA VCT201 and they are 100% identical machines apart from the branding and the small cosmetic differences.

I would have to have one of those Panasonic built VCRs from the late 70s, those have great build quality compared to the newer models. Also, don't use q-tips on video heads! Also did you try adjusting the tracking on the Panasonic?

Thanks for the tip, back in the day I used to have some special rubber foam VCR cleaning swabs. I think the belts actually need to be replaced and were a little loose. I just pulled it out of the storage shed and clicked play... tracking did help somewhat. Thanks for watching!

I have basically the same machine but mine records in PAL and SECAM but can also play back NTSC. The model is the NV-8600-EM. If you use your ears and listen to the machine carefully as it's playing, you can clearly hear that the head drum speed ins't stable and the servo is hunting. So an adjustment on the "Cylinder free run" control on the servo board should fix that. :)

Yea, from what I have heard you are supposed to use a sheet of paper and alcohol, but not on the rubber parts, those can use a damp paper towel instead.

7:50 That problem you’re having with the video dropping in and out if you would listen to the capstan motor it’s probably phasing meaning it speeds up and then it slows down if it does that there’s a bad cap on the power board that feeds the capstan motor I remember fixing an old VCR like that that had that particular problem. I thought it was the video heads.

Can you please show us to to see if there is wear on the head when I am buying a used one? Also how do you clean the head safely, if u can make a short video on it, it would be great!

Not sure, but one easy thing that can be done is to clean all the rubber belts and tires with to make sure they are not slipping. thanks for watching!

Great video! Thank you for sharing. I just purchased a PV 1210. The play button will not press down. Any idea why? The rewind button and stop buttons are the only ones I can press. With a tape inserted, it will rewind, but still cannot press the play button.

Thanks for watching! My PV-1210 has only had 3 problems in its lifetime and one of them if I recall did have the symptom of play not engaging.... It has been 20 years or more, so I don't remember the details, but it was power-related -- like power was not getting to a certain part of a circuit. I also remember it was related to that light bulb in the tape compartment somehow. Maybe I ran a ground wire or something between parts of the circuit, which fixed the play problem, but the light went out, so I had to find power for it elsewhere...

@@kylescott5761 That looks like a different problem that what I was thinking of - I was thinking play would not stay down. Looks like your VCR is having a mechanical problem of something blocking fast forward and play from even being pressed in the first place! I wonder if the little guides that pull the tape out didn't make it all the way back in? That would be the first thing I would check. That's run by a vertical gear with a motor and a very little belt. If you set the VCR on its side and remove a bunch of screws you can fold open the circuit boards and see where they are. I would dig down to the belts - if they are worn it may be you just need to cycle through various modes with a tape in.

Late reply but I am sure I know what's the problem since my NV-8600 had the same issue. You need to lubricate the two metal plates (sliders) that are located under the function keys.

I have a old 1980 JVC VHS toploader that doesnt work it auto stops when you push play. Any idea whats causing it i have been trying to get it working for a year now so would appreciate if you had any tip for fixing it.

Does it actually pull in the tape and start spinning the head? I had a similar problem with this Panasonic, I could press Play but the button would not stay depressed and nothing would start. One of the symptoms was that the tape sensing light was not shining when the VCR was powered on. One of the power supply outputs was not making it to a certain part of the board. I think I just connected 2 of the grounded areas to fix it.

@@ACBMemphis Hmm im going to check the power supply since it does not start the Light for the tape sensor and the play Button wont stay in it stops stays and the tape wont go around the head on my vcr.

How do you connect this to a flatscreen?

If your TV has a tuner you can use coax and tune the TV to channel 3/4, or use the composite audio and video output (yellow cable). Composite video is the same cable you could use to connect an older video game system such as an original Nintendo.
