വിഷാദരോഗം എന്നത് സാധാരണ നമ്മൾക്ക് ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന വെറുമൊരു നിരാശ (Sadness) അല്ല ചികിത്സ വേണ്ടി വരുന്ന ഒരു രോഗവസ്ഥയാണത് .ദിവസത്തിൽ അല്പനേരം മാത്രം നിലനില്ക്കുന്ന ഒന്നാണ് നിരാശ. പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ വായിക്കുമ്പോഴോ, പന്ത് കളിക്കുമ്പോഴോ, സുഹൃത്തുക്കളോട് സംസാരിക്കുമ്പോഴോ ഒക്കെ ഇത്തരം നിരാശകളെ മാറി നിങ്ങൾ ഉന്മേഷവാനാകാനാകും. എന്നാൽ വിഷാദ രോഗത്തെ അങ്ങെനെ എളുപ്പം മറികടക്കാനാവണമെന്ന് ഇല്ല.. വിഷാദ രോഗത്തിന് ഉള്ള കാരണങ്ങൾ ചുറ്റുപാടുകളും, ജനിതകപരം, മസ്തിഷ പരവും, മന:ശാസ്ത്ര പരവും സാമൂഹ്യ പരവും ശാരീരിക പരവുമായ ( ചില രോഗാവസ്ഥകൾ ) എന്നിങ്ങനെ നിരവധി കാരണങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്.

വിഷാദം രോഗം അവരുടെ ദൈന്യദിന ജീവിതത്തിലെ എല്ലാ മേഖലയിലും ( ജോലി, കുടുംബം, സുഹൃത്ത് ബന്ധങ്ങൾ എന്നിങ്ങനെ ) സാരമായി ബാധിക്കാം. മന:ശാസ്ത്ര/ മരുന്നു ചിത്സയാണ് വിഷാദ രോഗത്തിന് നല്കേണ്ടത്. തീവ്രത കുറഞ്ഞ വിഷാദത്തിന് മന: ശാസ്ത്ര ചികിത്സ മാത്രം മതിയാകും. കഠിനമായ വിഷാദത്തിന് മരുന്നിനോടൊപ്പം മന:ശാസ്ത്ര ചികിത്സയും നല്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട്.
