Great explanation. I often use these two but had no clue as to their difference. I just pushed the sliders around until I got something I liked, but now I will be pushing them with purpose.

This opens up some new opportunities for me to get creative. Didn't think about using them together. I often use the vibrance but rarely the saturation.

Thank you Colin. You have put a whole new spin on how to use these sliders by showing the How and the Why of how these sliders work together. I prefer this type of presentation. I lose the plot with large workflows and can't remember half of what is happening. Can you do more shot presentations like this.

I used them both, but slipped mink so long until the picture looked nice. I just wasn't sure what it was differentiating. Now that I know that saturation is actually a volume knob and vibrance the more refined tuning, I can play with it even more consciously.

And, don't forget to capitalize on theVibrance/Satur adjustment layer when you wish to apply increased saturation to specific areas using a layer mask. A great way to leave out potential areas of clipping.

This is how I first learnt about Vibrance and Saturation in PS6: Vibrance means "vibrance" so it adds more vibrance to an image. Saturation means "saturation" so it saturates the image. :P As a PS user, I will also never use general sliders when I want to edit specific areas. That's what "colour range" and "feather" and "layer" is for. This is a good video, I just don't agree with the buoys as an example, and the explanation was fine/good metaphors, but personally found it redundant. Vibrance means a richer variety of colours and that's why the function is named like that. Saturation means how much of something there is (or the intensity of it), in this case colour, hence the name for it. Vibrance and saturation can be used together as general sliders at once to create artistic images where realism is of less importance or you want to artistically emphasize something. Pictures taken with low illumination or wrong shutter times and/or ISO will not only lose details but also colour details. Vibrance in these cases might yield a worse result than saturation, since it will differentiate colours that really should be the same colours, in the same area, due to low light and artifacting. In these cases saturation is better, or using manual adjustments to hues and colours and a good denoiser. Can finish off with vibrance/saturation. In overexposed images, vibrance may be more important, and might have to be slid up together with vibrance, while lowering gamma and/or brightness. While if you try to repair a poorly filtered image (like the ones on smartphones or that people buy for 5-10 euros thinking it's great) you may only need the saturation slider then maybe vibrance slightly after that after denoising and manually adjusting levels.

thanks, very nice video. I've always used them, but really it has been a guess and check. It's remarkable what you don't know until you know! When you say the buoys clip when the red gets too saturated, how do you know that? The histogram appeared ok in your video there (at 1:30).

I never saw a video from you without learning something, even when the subject is something i known there´s always a tip, or a different (faster) way to do it. Sometimes, I wish you explain it Less (lol) but i understand that not everyone is on the same level, and you have to explain it "from zero". Nevertheless keep it up and thank you very much for all.

I shoot with Olympus and the images are more saturated than other cameras. So I've always have a preset to reduce saturation and increase vibrance. And I was told that increasing vibrance protects the hues for faces, thus reds, oranges and parts of yellow are protected more with vibrance. Nice explanation/tutorial and am I correct with my thinking?

@pedroschg4
@pedroschg4 3 жыл бұрын
i think clarity is for the local contrast like when you set in usm sharpen a high radius and a low strenght Like 20/20. Texture i think is like detail contrast as usm with high strenght and low radius like 150/0,8
