I used duotones in our print shop for a long time, and now I'm teaching new users old tricks to make new dynamic and creative images. Great explanation, one that twill never go out of style.

I never knew this. In high school (1972-73) I worked at a print shop making plates and did the occasional color separations. This is soooo much easier. Thanks!

I learned about duotones in college (2001-2004) kind of forgot about them, but we didn't learn about the curves for adjusting them. Thanks!

Just a note to say how much I enjoy, and have learned from, your videos over the years. Isolation has given me the opportunity to see lots more of them; unfortunately my aging brain does not retain things as well as it did, but I do know where to find you. :-) I just wish you had not lost your pure NZ accent. The Land of the Long White Cloud is one of my favourite places in the world, which I have been lucky enough to visit twice. I miss hearing people say chooks.

Nice Reminder! I had almost forgotten the possibilities this technique gives you, although back in the day I had actually used duotones a lot myself when I created images to be used for printing directly onto CDs using just 2 or 3 PANTONE colours. As to PANTONE coated vs uncoated: I am not 100% sure but I think coated (or uncoated) with PANTONE colours refers less to the physical appearance of the ink/colour itself but to the material it is meant to be printed on, i.e. coated or uncoated stock. The material used will change the way light is reflected by it and accordingly will change how a certain colour printed on it will actually look.

First exposure to this method in PS. I have a particular B+W image I shot a moment of years ago from Mohave Point in GCNP that might work well with this process!!!
