Walking into a comic book store can be intimidating. There are thousands of different comic books, and usually a man behind the counter you don't want to bother out of fear of a snarky response. Thankfully, our art editor and resident comic book expert Nick Gazin is here to share with us the Top 10 Comic Books of all time to get you beginners started. And like Nick says, this list is objective so there's no point in arguing about this in the comments section...

Why would anything recent be in the running for "greatest of all time" yet? You've got to let things marinate, digest and demonstrate their longevity, influence and unique power. You won't even feel the same about most stuff you love in your teens and twenties, in your 30's and 40's, even if you still enjoy it.

@henriquez199
@henriquez199 8 жыл бұрын
Two answers: 1. That's his porn collection 2. That's because he's a hipster probably only got to comics because of how popular they are now but didn't want to actually know or read the history of them and only read books that he thinks makes him superior than people who have read comics.

How about moebius whole work? In my opinion (although I haven't really read that many comics) these were the best I've ever seen. Franco-belgian comics in general are my favorites but this one just sticks out. The artwork is fantastic, although he uses some motives very often and it feel like a repeat, but it's still super detailed and unique and creative. The stories are also very artsy and unique, he really creates his own universes.

These are most likely the best comics I have ever read.

+cloberpot Eightball is a tremendous comic series. It's an anthology of short stories. Some of it feels like David Lynch, some of it feels like it could be from Animaniacs or something. It blew my mind, growing up in the 90's, and it was a huge influence on me as a creator. Robert Crumb is amazing too. Watch Crumb, the movie. It's considered one of the best documentaries ever made. And if you hate Carl Barks duck comics you hate all the brilliant things it inspired, like the Indiana Jones movies. As for Maus, you might think it's "meh", but it's the only comic ever to win the Pulitzer Prize. This is a very good list, I'd say. And little of it is obscure in any real sense.

Nick- totally agree with your top ten choice. I was born in 1947 so actually remember the great comic book burnings etc. Worked at a book store in late 60s early 70s convinced my boss to buy hundreds of dollars worth of undergrounds. Still have over 500- actual first editions. As you and others know they printed zap etc. as long as there was a market. Some guys can tell paper changes and staple changes etc. Anyway looks like you are doing a great job. I can not deal with much internet or digital stuff. Had to get computer for medical reasons. Heyo Nick, In the mid nineties I was given three shopping bags full of comics from a friend who's deceased uncle collected.They're mostly 70's & 80's, some in plastic preservation sleeves with $15 prices attached. Could you recommend any reputable source for appraisal? I'm from CT. Btw Mad Magazine most definitely was the best! There was an issue in early 60's with a detachable very thin vinyl record of burping accompanied with silly music. We had great fun playing it in the caf during lunch in junior h s. I've collected old stuff throughout my life, but not comics. Thanks.

I thought it was going to be entirely one dimensional and slice of life, indie cartooning picks, but it got better. Also, the military and law enforcement are just people in colorful costumes, Nick. Maybe says a lot.

This is a great list, thank you for presenting it. Really happy for the Carl Barks addition even though I am a Don Rosa fan. I find it obvious that certain comics such as Hellblazer, Sandman, Transmetropolitan, The Invisibles, Animal Man etc. did not make the list as they are somewhat limited in their breadth, whereas many of the ones mentioned span over long periods of time and are truly important pieces for the industry. Please make more lists, would love to hear about some lesser known comics/novels, perhaps a B-side. Steve Brule ftw. Personally I would have added Grant Morrisons and all his great work, especially in The New 52 but as well his early and personal work.

I should hate your list, but I love it, esp. your Number One! In a top twenty, I would include Saga, Persepolis, sections of National Lampoon, Tank Girl, and whatever else I have yet to discover.

This was actually a really relevant list. From a 12 year vet in the industry we have a lot in common. I would have put Stray Bullets in there though. =D

I know I’m Nothing compared To all the other comments, But I absolutely feel that he is correct with this list of top 10. Hernandez bro’s; Daniel clowes, r. Crumb, and Mad magazine. These are the essential pieces of literature that helped me mold into the person I am today. And I wouldn’t change that for the world!

They aren't on the list cuz they're hack stories. Most of them are ripped off from hack radio shows. Embrace embarrassing hack material at your own peril and avoid mentioning nerdiness while lobbying to have your favorite comics put on a comic book list.

I'm a huge comic book nerd and Maus and the fanatic four issue are the only ones I would see as none hipster shit, and even then I won't put them as the greatest comics, I wouldn't put maus on the list same way I wouldn't put a single issue on itself as the greatest comic, this hipster obviously doesn't know of paperback trades and also fuck his collection and his mustache as well.
