In July 2021, gunmen broke into Haiti’s presidential residence and murdered the country’s president with automatic weapons.
This kind of violent assassination is usually associated with military coups and civil wars. But, new evidence has come to light that may indicate this was a drug hit, carried out to protect the interests of cartels with connections deep in the Haitian government itself.
This is the story of how Haiti’s president may have become another casualty of the War on Drugs.

The morning after the assassination, I needed an uber to work. My driver happened to be Haitian. He was explaining the situation to me during the 20 minute car ride. This series by vice is extremely insightful and informative. I have a question though, it’s regarding whether or not the “war on drugs” is better resolved through government or individuals? What I mean by this is that vice did documentaries on Portugal and it’s drug epidemic that was completely rampant. Then after the government legalized drug use, violence, overdose and deaths declined. It’s was sort in a sense liberating where the government was hands free, but when you look at the cartels in Mexico there basically untouched by the government and regular individuals are always in the line of fire in violence, deaths and danger. So what really is the best approach to the “war on drugs” ?

I'd say while there are drug markets all over the world the place to start would be to legalize/decriminalize/regulate/ the biggest and most expensive markets - the US and Europe - moving the manufacturing into government-run farms/labs. If you take the massive profits away the criminal groups lose all of their power very quickly. No profit to be made = no incentive for drug cartels. It really is that simple.

Look at the Prohibition Era in the US during the early 1900s. Full-scale legalization with domestic production is the only answer. That's how you take away the power from the cartels; when you don't need to buy from them anymore, they have no power.
@tubester4567
@tubester4567 2 жыл бұрын
There really is no "war on drugs" in the US, The US is too soft and tolerant they dont have what it takes. There are countries around the world that eliminated drug problems. Mainly in Asia, like China. They dont play around, drug dealers are executed. People will say thats cruel, but when you consider the millions of deaths from drugs, and the destruction of society, then executing a few hundred dealers is less cruel. Its more cruel to allow it to continue and destroy your society.

US needs to establish their own drug cartel. Well technically the CIA counts but they need to be more assertive and take control of the drug trade from an economic standpoint. Allow HSBC to bank for the cartels but only under certain US restrictions. Slowly start retracting power away from inadequate leaders in the drug trade. Strengthen government power over drugs. Repeat. We need better leadership in this legitimate trade.

That means there are much fewer people exposed to drugs in China and they are much harder to come by.

The Japanese don't like to buy fully grown eels from overseas, as they prefer to raise them when they are still juvenile. But not only Asia, the Spanish consumes a lot of glass eels in their paella and as far as I know there is currently an export ban by the EU on European eels (Anguilla anguilla). The ones in Haiti are American eels (Anguilla rostrata). Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica) are currently the most highly fetched in terms of price.

In order to judge the ethics and operations of a country whose politics are steeped with corruption and integration with organized crime and the black markets you have to step back and understand the actual rules of the system at play. They clearly aren't engaging in democracy in its purest form, the rules and ethics at play that actually determine outcomes are hard to truly grasp as outsiders, and there are so many outside elements at play that many in other countries would probably have a hard time understanding beyond, "it's obviously a complicated situation with no quick and easy solutions." In some of these places, not Haiti specifically, you tend to see one brutal, corrupt, dictator replaced with another and the cycle just repeats itself. In many of these places, organized crime closely resembles governments. The lines differentiating the two get blurred rather quickly and the people find themselves siding with those who are either least likely to cause suffering and death or those that provide support and care regardless of ties to corruption or violent activity. It's funny that many in first world countries describe voting for their nation's leader as "picking the lesser of two evils" whereas the situation in countries with much less rule of law and democracy takes this to a place that would motivate most people living in industrialized democracies to be much more grateful for what they have.
