Since 1965, Faustino Barrientos has lived alone on the shores of lake O'Higgins in a house built from the remains of a shipwrecked fishing vessel. He's a pastoralist, living mostly off the land and his livestock, with few modern amenities. His nearest neighbors are in Villa O'Higgins, a small community of several hundred people, 25 miles away, accessible only by a two-day horseback ride through rugged mountain animal paths. Every few years, Faustino makes this ride to sell his cattle in town.
Currently 81 years old, Faustino is reaching the end of his life, and his self-imposed isolation is being encroached upon by the forces of government, economy, and tourism. In December 2011, VICE went to document his lifestyle and speak with him about the changing face of Patagonia and the gaucho lifestyle.
Originally released in 2011 on VICE.com

for anyone wondering, Faustino is still alive! last report of him was August 19th, 2020. he looks healthy in the photos, accompanied by his two dogs :) to those who wonder where did these photos came from - a few police officers went to his home to bring him clothes and chop some wood for him and they (police) posted pictures of him in their official twitter account.

It's weird that I can sort of relate to this man. I spend most of the time on my own, I dont interact with people very often. And watching this man I have realized that the less you are surrounded by people, the more wise and conscious about life you become, you appreciate or notice simple thing that everyone else would ignore like the changing weather, etc. You follow your instincts and you do things that woulden't do when you are around people, it's a feeling hard to describe.

Just that it wasn't on camera , is no proof she came empty handed. Maybe even all the trouble and huge journey she took on to meet him , might have been enough of a peace offering . A 'bottle of wine" would be the last thing on my mind to give him , I'd rather choose something realy useful he could use for a long time . Some kind of knife ,clothing or kitchen utensil .

It is always a good idea to walk a little in someone else's shoes and experience the world from a different reality. I like his take on climate change, simply through observing the nature around him. This is such a simple method of noticing change if one cares to take the time. Unfortunately most people are to preoccupied with the fabrications of modern life to understand the truth of nature. So take some time here and there and notice the differences.

As interesting as this is, he still has contact with the city where he sells his stuff. This isn't "Complete Isolation" or else he wouldn't have a calendar for 2011, or a chainsaw made in the late 80s. He's still REALLY isolated, but it hasn't been been complete isolation for 40 years.

So many people raging at the word complete in the title. What the fuck did you expect. It's virtually impossible to live on Earth without any human contact. If this is not "complete" isolation, its as close as it gets. Humans are social creatures that can hardly survive alone and need intellectual interaction with their peers. That's why isolation can have really bad consequences in human psyche. I think the documentary is a really good one and that this man is remarkable. He shows a lot of intelligence and perception and he probably knows more about current events than the average person who despite having access to an endless flow on info thanks to modern technologies, chooses to be quite ignorant..

Yes. The people complaining about the title wouldn't last 3 days in this environment. They'd die wondering why the newspapers are all months old and stacked 30 days worth high. I thought the point of a documentary was to look (eyes open) and listen (ears open) and perhaps self educate. It would seem however that anything on KZfaq is just another All Star HipHop clip in the eyes of most people.

Search for Dick Proenneke, a retired man who lived for thirty years near a lake in the Alaska mountains, and had a bush pilot friend who'd bring him his mail, and the supplies he ordered via it, every now and then. They made a very good documentary using his filming and journal notes, as he was an amateur photographer and kept journals about his everyday life

They say that he hasnt gone as far as the town near by, O'Higgins, which means he goes there from time to time. I'd imagine that he gets what he needs for a month or so, depending on the time of year, and just makes the trek back and forth as needed.

"We wanted to know how he was able to survive here all alone", well that's implying he did survive on his own, he obviously didn't. And any farmer who has been a farmer for four minutes knows how to survive until you die all alone.. They know how to make themselves a plate of meat and glass of water

This man has it made, no drama, no BS, just living the dream, awesomeness..humans suck ha, I enjoy my solitude, I’m married, but, I love my alone time, I’m used to it, but, 40 years of isolation, IDK if I could go that far, like it or not, humans are social animals, but, he’s happy and that is great!

the longest stint I lived alone was for 6 years...I love living alone...isolation doesn't mean you don't go out to get products, food, gas that you need....this is the second longest stint in my life living alone which is 2 years now...I literally didn't go any where except to get groceries and go to work for about a year and a half...I don't like being around other people and find comfort in being alone

One of the down sides of being born in today's society is that the education system doesn't educate. Instead it programs people such as yourself to view anything that doesn't fit the agenda as either taxable, illegal or impossible. With an attention span shorter than a cockroach's penis, listening and reading comprehension abilities are non existent and obviously reasoning or problem solving, thinking outside the box (aka the indoctrinated agenda) is a no go. Their skill set is typically limited to grammar and spelling Nazi-ism. Any questions they might pose are not out of genuine interest, but rather as an affront, an attempt to ridicule someone who is obviously thinking and living outside of the box. They also have a strong belief in global warming whilst the males self hate / despise healthy expressions of independence or masculinity. As an onlooker it can be frustrating but I suppose they're lucky in as much as not being aware of what they lack. Ignorance really is bliss for them it would seem.
