The Geriatric Ravers Still Smashing Drugs: Gravers | High Society

It’s commonly accepted that your 20s is the time to get completely off your nut before calming down and respecting yourself. But increasingly, it seems that British people have a different idea.
More than 3.7 million over-45s go raving once a week in the UK, and there has been a 518 per cent increase in over-60s being treated for cocaine abuse over the last decade.
These older ravers face worrying health risks that younger ravers don’t - the drugs are stronger, and their hearts aren’t. Will physiology prove to be the ultimate party pooper, or have these pioneers unlocked the key to eternal youth?
-
The War on Drugs has been won by drugs. They’re everywhere. Many of them are new, and they’re all more potent. Society is altering chemicals, and chemicals are altering society back, creating new drug scenes - some funny, some bizarre, some terrifying.
Drugs on TV usually mean criminals getting busted or addicts in recovery. But this series is about the cultures and people that have grown around the substances.
High Society will show you how drugs are shaping our world.

As an autistic, I went to an outdoor festival and took E. It was mind blowing - I saw, in slow motion, how people interact, communicate with body language, all the social clues were so obvious. I was able to look into people's eyes for the first time! I will never forget that experience

Same. Though my Autism was undiagnosed then (42 now), rolling was the only time I felt "normal"; having the confidence and wherewithal to socialize in any setting with (almost) anyone while exercising full control over my body: facial expressions, gait; hell even my dancing wasn't half-bad sometimes. It was empowering! Unfortunately, the experience being irresistible and the appetite for more 'normality' insatiable, it became a habit indulged in too frequently, and there's a price to pay for saturating your brain with serotonin on a regular basis. Plus, the tabs themselves were becoming adulterated post-2002-ish and I ended up poisoning myself. I no longer possess my once impressive faculty for math, and now speak haltingly when searching for words which once came so quickly and naturally to weave eloquent, if aspberger's-shaded diction. But hey, I got a precious daughter out of the bargain. I wouldn't have met her mom had I not been partying. Don't damage that beautiful brain of yours!

I've been a drug addict my whole life, started sniffing airplane model glue in 1968, I was 8, followed by weed, of coarse alcohol, hash, acid, mescaline, shrooms, speed, cocaine, heroin, in about that order. It's the heroin that takes the most from you, I was a hard worker, a functioning addict, but again the heroin made it near impossible to keep steady control, it just consumes you, every thought is next hit, I'm 62 now, have no idea how I've survived the countless od's, on a suboxone program, it's saved me, although I still freebase cocaine, it's crack with the baking soda cooked out, brings cocaine back to it paste form basically, pure. Drugs have taken all from me, family, I'm completely isolated, I don't feel sorry for myself but I love my family and their not around. I never talk about this, I'm sorry to bore you if you've read this but I actually feels kinda freeing to print out my story. Good luck 🙏

I was a major DJ in Philly for over 20 years. I used to play at the huge clubs on Delaware Ave. At 40 on my birthday after going through an 8-ball, and watching my friends drop like flies I knew it was time to stop. Over 70% of my friends as well as my younger sister are now dead. A good friend of mine just died last week. Dont kid yourself. A functional drug user is still a drug user. All it takes is the wrong mix of coke and Fentanyl and youre done. Im turning 60 next month. Im happy and sad as I survived but most of my friends didnt.

If you are 60/70/80 and going to Raves, taking drugs and enjoying life, who’s to say that the “dangers” even matter, at that point in life one has lived a full lifetime and if they perish doing something they love then is it even wrong? I say regardless of the negative impacts that these ppl are very aware of, they are happy, they are living exciting lives instead of just getting old and dying from old age! The only time I saw someone who was older who was shunned was this dude who was obviously there just to pick up girls and didn't know anything about rave scene culture. Stuck out like a sore thumb. Start with the artists you really really love and go to those shows and make friends from there. It'll be easier that way because you'll have a good reason to be there: You're going to see one of your favorite artists. 🤷 Also festival culture is great immersion too. So yeah, go for the music and everything else will kinda fall into place. If LOVE EDM I think you'll find a group of people as excited about it as you are. Everything else with like drug culture is just a side show to the main event.

I'm an ex-full-time partyer, been and done it all a thousand times over, now I'm an addictions counsellor. I'm not against drugs or drug taking, it'd be very hypocritical if I was. The important questions to answer for me is this: What are the most important things in your life? How are those things affected by your use? If the answer is that the important things (relationships, job, kids, health, mental health etc) are being negatively affected then it's time to reevaluate. I can assure you that just because you stop using doesn't mean you stop living. I'm happier now than I ever was when I was using, and it's real.

Raves can be a huge rush, but it's easy to lose yourself in it. Of course, figuring out for yourself when is the proper amount of time will vary from person to person. Gary was together and moderated "you can always add on you can't take off" I could have done with him in my day. He was happy, healthy, chatty and social. Dave struck a very isolated figure, you can't say he looked healthy all he was doing was consuming I question if he could stop without help. Even when they went out it looked so depressing and isolated he couldn't make eye contact with her as she interviewed him, just staring straight ahead. When she began to ask about potential trauma he began to rub his left hand and move it about. I know those movements from my own experiences, he looked like he was having a freak out and was feeling it in his left arm, which could mean he was feeling like he was having heart problems. Of course I could be projecting but it brought me back to my last days i felt that panic again and my heart went out to him in that clip. I worry for him, a lot. thats the best and easiest way to quit i find, i quit weed and alcohol that way when it just wasn't fun anymore, smoking is the only thing i struggle with quitting, but i have never been a huge smoker, no more than 8-10 a day and i can get by on 4 a day without much issue, but totally quitting is hard and most of the issue comes from boredom and habit and not addiction, i spent 5 days in hospital a few years ago and they gave me a nicotine patch the first day and i never asked for another after that one, i found it didnt make me feel any better and i didnt feel any worse without it, but i was distracted the whole time i was there, boredom has been the source of almost all my desires through life to consume drugs, part of it was also depression when i was younger but i got over that when i found out i had ADHD and that was what was causing my despression since it took away my ability to focus and also my energy.

Their lives revolve around substance abuse, not each other, it's just they abuse substances in the same spot. I am 60 years old, and I partied hard well into my 40s. I think it's great if you can keep it up! I just kind of got bored with it. Got tired of having my head all jangled up. But if somebody handed me some good ecstasy, I sure as hell would not turn it down. I just probably would not go out to a club. I can enjoy it just fine chilling at home.

What scares me most about the scene today is the prevalence of fentanyl in street drugs, especially where I live. It's sooo easy to mix the drugs wrong, leaving "hot spots" in a batch no matter how hard you try. When the difference between life and death is literally the weight of a grain of rice, you can see how easy it is to overdose. And don't get me going on bogus psychedelics. What we used to call "dirty acid" turned out to be totally different compounds. It's a crazy world we live in!!

NBoMe hasn't been around for many years now. LSD is super easy to get and there are actually a lot of fantastic rc psychedelics around these days (4 substituted tryptamines, 1p-lsd/al-lad etc) that you can just order legally on the internet. Really easy to get proper psychedelics. Just test your stuff. Always got my stuff on the darknet and never received something other than what I ordered.

I've been there, done that, and I'm glad I don't have to live like that anymore.
