On this episode of 'VICE Talks Film,' we sit down with director Mike Mills to talk about his latest autobiographical film, '20th Century Women.' The coming of age tale stars Annette Bening, who channels Mills's real-life mother as Dorthea and enlists two younger women (Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning) to help her raise her adolescent punk rock son.
Mills talks about his own experience being raised by strong, outspoken women, the role music plays in the movie, and how he built the perfect cast based on his real family.

I hate this comment section. This comment section is filled with people who are absolute meninists & have not even seen 20th Century Women. 20th Century Women is definitely the best film I've ever seen. It's a beautiful ode to the women who have raised us.

At least I know the men in this comment section hate their female siblings and their mothers. To have so much hatred for what carried them for 9 months. What fed and took care of them. I honestly think, people like this are sociopaths.

A lot of fragile masculinity in the comments damn. Go and watch the film. It's a great film, and the fact that it's a tribute to the women in his life, is amazing. To all those name calling, look around you and look at the women that positively contributed to your upbringing. It may be many, it may be few, but it doesn't make you less of a man. Real man know how important and amazing women are, and they should be celebrated.

*An important part of art is that it showcases different ideas and perspectives to people who would never have seen or heard of them before. This film is showing what it is like to be grow up in a matriarchal family in a time when the USA, and the world, was a lot more patriarchal. This is hardly SJW propaganda.* We all complain when SJW's try to censor and lambaste art, because it shows a different narrative to one they feel comfortable with, so let's all just not be hypocrites and get really badly triggered, ok?

Nathan Warrington It's okay, dude. You can stop projecting your insecurities. We all know you're afraid of things beyond your comprehension. You don't have to keep defending yourself. Your toxic masculinity isn't going anywhere, unfortunately. Your mother just wishes she'd raised someone who respects women and different viewpoints, who isn't such an egotistical douchebag. But what do I know? I'm just some random faceless person on the internet, and my opinions literally mean nothing. Have a nice day!

Can’t wait to see C’mon C’mon, with Joaquin Phoenix. I watched 20th Century Women when it came out and remember enjoying it but I’m gonna have to give it another go around. I don't see what is wrong with this guy, to me he seems like an eccentric artist expressing himself through film. Clearly he is respected and successful and I thought he had some interesting things to say about his movie. Didn't like the interviewer though, she didn't have very good questions, it felt like she was just interested in pushing feminist propaganda further.

I will never forget how awesome vice "used" to be, the beginning seasons. They still have some interesting material now and then, but it's NOTHING like it was. Now it's so controlled, bias, and used to push certain ideas and agendas etc etc. Always with all the leftist, progressive, homosexual, race baiting bullshit. Their commercials on cable are a perfect example. Just as bad as MTV and comedy central.

I decided to put my personal feelings aside and give this movie an honest chance, because I like all the actors in it. I just finished watching it, and it was terrible. every character in the film except the son is super annoying and self centered. The characters face no real problems but generate their own by being selfish, pretentious, first world people. really disappointed. the film reflects Mike mills to the letter.

But seriously though, enough with the talking about how amazing women are. Stop telling us how hard life is for women. Women are crushing it compared to men. Last time I checked, women outlive men by 5 years, the prisons are filled with men. All the dirty/dangerous jobs are done by men. Enough with this complaining, and over complimenting women. It's sickening. The average man has it way harder than the average woman. But if you listened to the media, you would think women have it so bad. And in reality, women's main complaint is "sometimes it's a little bit harder for me to have an abortion than I would like". Men's complaints are "they are sending us to war to die, or have our body parts blown off".
