A feller that's subscribed to the channel reached out to me and offered up his 1986 Chevrolet S10 Pickup for FREE. It's been sitting for 16 or 17 years on a farm, is completely rusty, and really rotten inside. Appears to be a 2.5L with a S101 4 speed manual. So of course I said yes. Let's get it over to the shop and see what we've got! Think I can get it running and driving again? What should we do with it?

Well, in 2001 I bought a brand new s10 to use as a commuter truck to keep the miles off my diesel. I put over 300k on that truck and it still ran good when I sold it in 2018. So I can say it was definitely good enough. Besides normal wear and tear items it never gave me problems. True story, in winter I put 400lbs of sand bags in the back over the rear axle and I was passing 4x4's in the snow without chains. Since new I always used Royale Purple synthetic oil and changed it about every 5000 miles. It was a great little truck. Oh, when I ordered the truck, I asked for an absolute base model. It was a 5 speed manual, no AC, AM/FM radio only, crank down windows, no electronics, etc. The dealership thought I was crazy. But, all I wanted was a commuter truck just for going to work and back. Something new but cheap. I paid $7000 for it, and ran it for 17 years......

Yep, my father used to work on his cars when I was a wee lad, too. They were mainly late 60's and early 70's cars back then he had owned throughout the 70's and early 80's. The '71 Fiat 124 he owned and drove for a few years was a regular father & son get together gathering spot when I was age from 4 to 7. Then he also had an oil burning '71 Chevy fullsize wagon (not sure if it had the 400 small block or 402 big block, but I distinctly remember that she had the fender tag designating 400), the plugs had to be cleaned monthly! Then it was on to a '73 Torino Squire wagon-she leaked coolant alot and I remember adding gallons, and gallons, and gallons of coolant to it over a period of 6 months or so. Dad never fixed the leak, as the car needed extra time before it'd start moving the car each morning and he figured the trans would die any day, but it never did. He instead lost his patience with it, and so it was parked in the yard until around 5 years later as I was working as a teen and replaced the waterpump in it myself, and then she was my ride while in high school! Ah, to relive those happy, happy days of yore!

Good Dad work Derek, saw this video and made me smile, I had an extended cab version of this truck with the GMC label on it, bought it at a yard sale for cheap, went through the usual , spark, fuel thing, ended up being a weak fuel pump and bad TBI. had the same 4-speed, Isuzu transmission, thanks for pointing out the different transmission types, mine also had the Isuzu gearbox. did the maintenance, oil, fluids, replaced the TBI, fuel pump and water pump, became my spare vehicle for hunting, fishing' , and going to the landfill once in a while, owned it for over 5 years before trading it for a bigger truck. Thanks for posting and sharing, seeing that Iron Duke engine back to life brought back some cool memories. Keep Wrenching'

I had a 1986 S-10 it was blue like that. Little 4 cylinder it had was blown so I went to the junk yard because the rearend was locked up, told the trans slipped so bad it ran in the red line and blown the motor from that. So got a 4 link 9” ford, 6 speed manual and start a 350ci SBC build that ended up at 383ci SBC. I had two double pumpers and it was stupid fast. Miss my old truck it was my first. Got it at 13 years old and built it up. Learned welding, wiring, how to do almost all of it. The next owner almost killed himself in it but the roll cage saved him motor and trans were ripped apart truck was almost all crushed up very sad but he lived so I guess my teenage self did good all in all. Looking forward to watching another ‘86 build

It sold it to a freind, he isn't speaking to me now. Then I bought a Colorado with the 2.5 and it runs like a large six. Good little mill for small truck!
